Here’s the real problem. How many games have had ALPHA FOOTAGE trailers that look feature complete? The problem is the gaming industry has conditioned people to what they think alpha is supposed to look like.
Alpha games truly are barely playable. They may be missing certain textures, models, audio, missions or triggers might be broken. It’s a mess.
Beta is when a game is “feature complete” and it enters the meat and potatoes debugging phase.
I promise you that a tremendous amount optimizing and clean up happens in debug all the way until….
RC. Release Candidate. This is when the game is good enough to be shipped, and it gets sent off for review and if that RC passes quality control. There can be 10-20 or even more RCs that get rejected. Upon finally determining that there are no show stopping issues, it goes “gold”. This means THAT version of the game is going to be sent out for printing on disc and prepped for retail release. In that time development will continue on various issues and further optimizations. These are day 1 patches.
That’s not even getting into the fact that these builds seem to be from late 2020. In the middle of a pandemic, there probably weren’t a lot of next gen dev kits to go around. They may have just been using whatever they could to test and build the game. It’s certainly not unheard of for a developer to be using last gen devices to start work on the next game when they’re short on devkits.
I totally believe this is a legit leak. I hope it’s current gen only but I wouldn’t be surprised if it released on old stuff too.
