GTA:SA banned in Australia

Yet their reality TV shows have people nude in the shower scrubbing each other down and flirting like they would fuck 5 seconds later if there wasn't a camera.
 
Wasn't it already censored, albeit for violence, not sex, in Australia?

Australia has some of the most strict content laws in the free world.

New Zealand, however...
 
I have a feeling Rockstars future GTA games will suffer in sales because of all that's been happening.

only bans violent games that suck! (manhunt and one other) GTA marketing schemes are usually along the lines of "BANNED IN AUSTRALIA!!!"

It's only banned because they have a REAL classification board instead of some lame duck voluntary one. They've deceived nobody of real enough importance over here, although of course they've had to face re-classification and the cost of that is high... but this is different altogether.

I'm wondering now what the situation was in the UK. Was it rated by PEGI alone or did they get a proper 15/18 certificate?

Which I didn't understand. I thought New Zealand had an "anything goes" policy when it came to entertainment.
 
w00t, when gta3 was banned here i made plenty $$ from my gta3 which i bought before it was banned, something like 210AU on ebay. hope it works again

They weren't removed, you just couldn't screw them.

For the record, San Andreas came out completely uncut because the OFLC received so many complaints about Vice City's censoring. Something in the order of 60% of their complaints in 2003 were about Vice City.
 
I work in a video game retailer in Australia, and it hasn't been pulled from the shelves, or even asked to be pulled yet. The game is uncut, in it has hookers, hot coffee, and everything else the other countries have got.

I have been waiting for them to ban it, as the OFLC is quiet strict here. If its banned, the value of the game will be lucky to go up 2bucks. Everyone already owns it :lol
 
Ridiculous, but unsurprising. We've had films banned (after screening) and even art exhibits refused entry due to lobying from conservative groups. It's a joke.

the government and games classification committee (or whatever it is) seem to think that ALL games that are made are for kids hence not authorizing a R rating.

Hey look at this guy try to defend his country by saying it's not a big deal that THE FUCKTARDS IN THEIR GOVERNMENT DON'T LET THEM PLAY A SIMPLE FUCKING VIDEOGAME.

Sorry man, strict censorship is a big deal, and in this case it's perfectly fine grounds to call your country shit.

Just thursday night I was at a panel talk and there was much talk of GTA:SA and the eventual ban it would receive, pretty much it boils down to a very silly ratings board that we have here in australia as they feel video games are only for kids and thus higher ratings aren't needed. The criteria that the rating panel uses to hire is bloody stupid as they seek people who are of a conservative mind so as to have the most critical approach to classifications in an effort to not upset the general public.

The dvd company my brother works with has been having close talks with the australian classifications people and they just sound like idiots, for a full G (general viewing) rated kids show one single episode had to be rated PG (parental guidance) because for 4.5 seconds a baby ROBOT in the show was shown to vanish in a suspect way that COULD make the audience think for those 4.5 seconds the baby robot MAY be dead.
They are out of touch with the australian general publics thoughts on most of this stuff and are overly sensitive when the public are on a whole far more liberal.
Another very stupid thing just passed has been the new ratings designs that are far to big and destroy the dvd cover art and posters, when shown a printed copy with the new design for the ratings on it their comment was "ohhh that is a lot bigger than what we thought it would be isn't it, very prominent indeed", when asked if it could be changed then they said it would have to be when they revise the rules again which will be in 4 years.

So yeah the australian ratings are shit but hell we have a screwed up dvd market here with some of the cheapest dvd prices found anywhere, go figure.

Here are examples of the new colour coded rating designs that are on all new australian release dvds, the R is the only non bright colour with M15+ being a bright blue.

Makes you wonder why they ban it after anyone remotely interested has already bought it.

There seems to be a real surge of "conservatism" (bigotry, prudishness, moralising) in Australia over the past decade, probably largely thanks to the conservative Liberal government in power. Things are only going to get worse now that the government has control over both houses of parliament, before it gets better. GTA being banned until they release a new version without the hot coffee crap (which come on, should never have been in there in the first place, what the fuck were you thinking wasting time making sex mini games Rock*?) is the least of Australia's problems. I'd be more worried about them wanting to record the details of every woman who has an abortion, proactively changing legislation to ensure any legally recognised relationship has to involve a man and a woman, and giving police powers to shoot to kill if they suspect someone of being a terrorist on the street.
