Trying to catch up to the thread this morning, I will add your info to the OP, thank you!

Would you mind posting up the rest of your settings so I can give them a try? High res shadows has a big performance impact but I only have it on because I have shadows set at high instead of very high, the difference is pretty noticeable otherwise.
I don't even use extended shadows now because of the fps hit, have you driven through the desert at night etc? Flown a jet low? What kind of fps do you get when doing that?
What is the utilization on the gameplay thread like? (core 0 probably) Or CPU utilization in generali also wonder just how powerful of a cpu is required to eliminate the frame drops and frametime variances while driving, if its possible at all on current hardware.
Could be. I have had issues with other games utilzing full system ram in the distant past that manifested in horrible stuttering.Hi guys - GTA runs fine for the most part, but sometimes the game begins to stutter (this happens more often when I'm driving a vehicle). My RAM usage is upwards of 90% when I'm running the game (8GB). Is this a RAM issue? I have a an I5-3570k and a GTX 660 TI (4GB) and an HDD. Could it be a different issue?

Try it without Vsync as well so as to see if the GPU utilization drops from 99% to something lower during those sections.i get the same issue with 16gb of ram and 2 ssds in raid. imo its a cpu/general platform limitation
ill check later today. but gpu usage drops of course drops every time.
Was it theI had two crashes that related to my processor OC but I don't think the voltage was quite high enough so I upped it ever-so-slightly and it is okay now, or at least no crashes at the moment.paparazzi
Anyone getting crashes should look in their event viewer. Of four crashes I have experienced: two related to processor and the other two didn't give any obvious causes.
Just want to repeat that Windom Earle's 970 settings are great for me. 99% solid 60 and looks great. Ymmv.
It's basically impossible to not cross the 3.5GB Vram limit with my 970's, unless I turn most everything to normal. The game seems to run fine over the limit. Any consensus on this topic. Are most running settings that the game indicates is over the Vram budget?

Does Long Shadows make a difference for anyone? I can't tell what it acually changes, i have tried it on or off during sunset and sunrise, but the shadows does not get any longer or shorter.
The shadows does not match up with the sun position for me, so even if i see that the sun is behind something, im still standing in the sun and casting a shadow. It does not seem to affect performance for me either.
I have also tried changing shadow detail while turning long shadows on and off, but i still don't notice a difference.

As others have said before, I have the impression that shadows are bugged. That hard line in front of you that switches between super low res and detailed shadows is annoying. Why have such extensive shadowing options when not one of the settings helps with this?
Also shadowing distance under the advanced settings does not seem to do anything.
-I've enabled vsynch in Nvidia panel
-I've disabled vsynch in game
-I still only have 29/59hz options
What am I doing wrong?
Anyone know what the PS4 equivalent settings would be?
Core usage of 3770K during a police chase. This game is the complete opposite of GTA4, kudos Rockstar

Not really. Your screenshot was taken under a bridge with very few people/cars around: population density is what seems to hit the CPU the hardest. I'm not saying it's not very different from IV's stupid use of resources, but in my experience V is still somewhat more CPU limited than GPU limited, as was IV.
Anyone finding the AA being inconsistent? Sometimes I'll struggle to find a jaggy, then other times I'll nearly lose an eye. Mainly in cutscenes I feel.
Almost identical settings to what you list.... Says I'm using 5.2 gigs.I have everything on very high, FXAA on, Tessellation on high, no MSAA, max sliders under normal graphics options and half sliders on the advanced options.
What are you turning on that pushes it up over 3.5 gigs
What res? I cant break 3.5Gb at 1080p.
my post is from my own titan x, running at 1380/7900 to boot. certain parts of the map inexplicably tank performance. i also wonder just how powerful of a cpu is required to eliminate the frame drops and frametime variances while driving, if its possible at all on current hardware.
Definitely. In my experience, those hillsides where there's a ton of vegetation will tank performance at 1080p on a single Titan X/5820K with everything at maximum excluding MSAA. Throw in some whether effects and headlights to increase the number of shadows being cast in the scene and things get even worse. At 1440p I'm definitely nowhere near maxing the game in order to keep frame rates above 60fps at all times. So, every time I see "I'm running 1080p/60fps near max on my midrange system" I just sort of wonder what I'm doing wrong, you know? ;-)
You have to take CPU and other variables into effect. I would like to see some SSD comparisons as well. That's why I was asking of some have an M.2 drive as it's double the read and write from my 850Evo to my XP941.So we've got people getting 70-90 fps at 1440p with a 970 and someone struggling to maintain 60 fps at 1080p with a Titan X.
Don't know what to believe anymore. There's just so many settings variables per person I guess.
3570K
R9 290
16 GB Ram
With every setting (aside from the experimental sliders) set as high as I can, I'm getting an almost perfect 30fps in the benchmark. This is completely stock so I'm going to see how much overclocking both the CPU and GPU improves things.
Edit: Just occurred to me that I never posted my resolution, egad! 1440p.
This. When you get to a valley with lots of vegetation and grass and you maxed out, your performance will tank. Period.Definitely. Changing the shadow softness or switching to the AMD or Nvidia shadowing tech and then back to your prefered setting fixed it for the moment for me once. What causes the hard edged square box to appear around your character sometimes? Is it high resolution shadows freaking out?

And here I was thinking something is wrong with my 970 since there's people maxing the game running at 70-90 fps no problem with the same VGA.
Same GPU/monitor as you. Getting a solid 70-90 fps with FXAA and most settings at default. Interested in others' settings with this combo.I have a GTX 970 connected to a 1440p korean monitor via DVI and an AV receiver connected via HDMI.
I got rid of the 59hz crap by disabling the HDMI connection in device manager. Now Borderless Window mode lets me get up to 96hz!
I restarted my computer and set the paging limit to automatic.
Ran the game for a little bit and was having no stuttering issues. The RAM was only about 60% in use as well. I think I may have just had too many background processes running b/c I rarely turn off my computer/restart.
I think a lot of people - myself included - are sharing their 1080p/60fps solid settings as it runs in the city. I know personally I haven't gotten to a countryside setting yet. Once I do, I have no doubt I'm going to have to back some stuff down.
I was even going to proactively turn down grass last night (it's currently at very high) but it requires a game restart and I didn't feel like doing it at this time.
