GTA V PC Performance Thread

I tried it, thought the performance hit wasn't worth it. It's certainly a bit less blurrier than FXAA, but it also results in some more obvious jaggies.

So even that doesn't take care of it? Damn...

Best I've seen is MSAA x 2 + MFAA, but unfortunately that causes artifacts in certain places at certain times of day. I might try MSAA x 4 again, but I was getting crashes with it before.

At this point I'm wondering if running at 4k on a 4k monitor (not DSR) is the only way to clean this bugger up.

I am so sick of the aliasing in this game, I'm finally thinking of trying Reshade SMAA. Anyone using it / can vouch for it?

Im using it and very happy with the output, def less power hungry than MSAA and runs great for me i72600K @4.5ghz GTX 970 4GB. In fact once i set the cpu proirty to high its great! Will be sticking with sweetfx.

As mentioned in my post, mostly 60s and 70s, with dips to the 50s. Bear in mind that was before I got to Trevor, desert sections can tank my framerate down to the low 40s. Improved since the patch though, low 40s are now rare, and camera panning when during high speed driving is smoother. The latter might also have something to do with the fact I've changed mouse input to 'direct' from 'raw'.

As an aside, I would stress the importance of your monitor and whether or not VSync is enabled when assessing performance. Because tearing is hardly an issue on my 144Hz monitor I am able to run non-VSynced without penalty where my GPU is being put to full use. Not enough people state their monitor and whether they have VSync on in their benchmarks, it can be a key differentiator when comparing results.

I am using vsync on my NVidia (adaptive) settings and turn off vsync in game. Also - what does AA at FXAA mean?

My eye's must be going bad. I'm staring at these photos and can't spot the difference's you mention.

i took them quickly but its quite clear in game when you toggle Sweetfx on and off. just stand near a colored sign or on grassy area and you will see the difference. on monitors as stills its probably harder to judge, but there are better shots of it in action just not from me :)

weird.. i just received another 350MB update just now, installed and all seems fine tho cant see whats changed. this is in addition to the 350mb update that came out yesterday. did online get updated?

Hopefully because yesterday's update seemed to hurt my frame rate among other things.

I was also getting a message stating "Taking longer than usual to verify game on servers" when starting the game. It would eventually load but it's just strange.

I'll have to play later and see if today's update fixes that.

After the patch, I can run this game pretty well with 2xMSAA. I'm not sure if that's because of the patch though or the fact I got a new computer.

I have a problem with the game. Somehow everything in the distance is incredibly blurry, and there also seems to be some kind of aliasing flickering on the ground. Here is a Screenshot (4xMSAA / FXAA off), you can see it in the upper part of the image:

Is this a bug? Can I change it? Or is this just the way the game looks?

Ha. Is that DoF? Try disabling in game depth of field from the settings to see if it makes a difference.

Try lowering PostFX from Ultra to Very High or High.
That did the trick for me in regards to the blurriness of distant objects.

Tried different settings as suggested, not that much difference unfortunately. Although the effect doesn't seem to be as pronounced / noticeable during normal gameplay. But thanks anyway guys.

TXAA really blurs the crap out of this game unfortunately. I'm still switching my AA options up far too much. Might just say screw it, use FXAA, and take the extra performace. I already had to bite the bullet and turn down grass to very high to stay near 60 in Blaine County even somewhat consistently. Playing at 1440p but that TXAA blur still gets to me.

I agree. Txaa looks good in screenshot but I do not like the effect I get when in-game. It seems blurry to me.

I have a 2gb gtx 770 and actually did something folks here might think is dumb. I turned texture quality to normal, but changed AA to 4xMSAA and turned extended distance and shadow scaling to max.

I spend so much time in cars driving, that I felt this looked the best to me. It means I see everything much cleaner/clearer. I wasn't able to manage 4xmsaa and high quality textures. I guess if I had motion blur on it might not matter, but I have that off.

I know that all games will draw in nicer effects when the player gets within a certain distance but I just don't like that I can literally see where that box is. I'm not sure if I've ever seen that in another game before this one.

Yeah... This game looks beautiful to me, but that is some last gen shit. I don't even remember PS360 having this problem?? Consider me confused.

After the update my 2GB GTX670 is having no problems with the high res textures. I do notice some pop in here and there but no stuttering after driving across the city like it used to do.

I can get a pretty consistant 60fps with advanced setting off and most other options set to high.

Well, the settings GeForce Experience is insisting on are giving me drops into the high 40's / low 50's when driving.

Before I got a constant 60 FPS, not sure what's changed.

What I really need is a G-Sync monitor, then I won't care.

You're also seeing the chromatic aberration. It's more pronounced towards the edge of the screen. Can't be disabled.

My performance is really stuttery and ass now.

Windowed borderless with Afterburner limiting to 60fps. My CPU and GPU usage aren't near 100% (both around 70-80) but I keep getting stutters that bring me to 59~ FPS.

I'm getting this problem where the image is jittering when I'm looking around. It's a recent issue and I've tried different graphics setting to no avail. it has nothing to do with fps either.

Any ideas?

Limiting my fps to 60 has always given me problems. Try 62.

I just tried downsampling some more with my mighty little gtx760. This time I did 3200x1800>1920x1080 and turned some more settings down. The trade off so far from what I can tell is worth it.

Cool, I might try this with my 770. Did you use fxaa with the dsr?

Finally found my 'optimized' settings after some tweaking.

SLI 980's
4790k @ 4.7ghz
16GBs of RAM
ROG Swift (1440p, 144hz)

Everything maxed with the exception of grass (very high), AA (MSAAx2, although FXAA seems just as good), and reflection AA (4x MSAA).

Constant 60+ fps, although for the most part it's usually in the high 70's+.

Looks fantastic.

It's pretty absurd how the grass quality is the biggest FPS killer, it's so insane.

I'm experiencing a very serious stuttering problem. After about 20 minutes into the game I experience pauses/stutters/hitches that are really starting to ruin my experience. Most of the posts I see about similar things indicate that the recent patch may have fixed the issue for others, but it's still bad, if not worse, for me.

I posted some previously to show the colors being much better and more vibrant. You can adjust the SMAA strength also from the config, tho i havent tried that yet, looks ok to me so far.

Just tried it myself. The sharpening and colour effects are really nice, but SMAA doesn't seem to fix the aliasing. I then tried MSAAx4 + MFAA (which is effectively MSAAx8) and there was still aliasing.

I'm guessing nothing will truly fix the aliasing apart from running at 4K.

At native res the in-game FXAA combined with Sweetfx's default sharpening and vibrance looks pretty nice.

I'm also getting aggressive stuttering now with the latest patch. It was fine before this, only slight stutter when driving to a new area but now it's pretty consitant and some times causes my frames to go down to around 30. Other than that I'm getting 60+ constantly.

Installed the game yesterday and tried to do the benchmark this morning but it crashed to desktop. No error. I Installed the AMD beta drivers and tried again - same thing happened. So I thought I'd see if the story mode runs, and it does. What could be wrong with the benchmark?

It's a well known issue. Complete the prologue first and then the benchmark will run.

ive used this setup but NVCP FXAA instead. Has it been confirmed which is the better FXAA solution - in-game or driver forced?

I think driver FXAA runs like 1 frame slower but might have better coverage – it also gets rid of the aliasing on the map which is a nice bonus.

I use the in-game FXAA because it shows up in screenshots.

Weird. I'll give that a shot, thanks.

You could also try 59, 58 or 65 if 62 doesn't help. I too have always had problems limiting straight to 60fps but one these limits has always worked and done wonders (mostly 59 or 58).

Everything maxed in advanced settings as well? I have almost same set up and finding that advanced extended distance kills performance as well.

Here are my settings.

I5-4690k (stock)
16gb ram
Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 (stock)

First I used the optimize button on GeForce Experience.

Turn V Sync off
Turn Grass to very High
USe FXAA
Shadows softest
Turn down distance scaling detail and shadows in the distance to about 50%

Before I made these changes seemed the game was locked to 60fps with dips to 30fps using the in game benchmark. Now I'm getting 90fps with dips to 60. Game is pretty smooth, a little bit of microstutter here or there. Game looks more or less the same when playing.

In-game FXAA doesn't do anything for me, and control panel FXAA blurs my Steam overlay -_-.

Did they update that Optimal button in the past few days or is it known not to work with every card? It seem like it worked well for you but the Optimal settings gives me settings that are beyond the capability of my card.
