I'm not familiar with the comics or lore for this, is it accessible for people who've never heard of the source material.

The majority of people have heard of the likes of Iron Man, Xmen etc. This is the first instance where a niche Superhero has come to the screen.

The only exposure the general audience (may have) had with Iron Man was the 90s cartoon. Most people apart from comic readers didn't really know who he was.

They all have nods and references for the people who read the comics, but as a newcomer you can still understand everything.

You don't need to read anything to enjoy GotG, at least according to James Gunn & Kevin Feige.

Though I would recommend reading the Main Course in the Recommended Reading section.

Yeah-I found a babysitter, so my wife and I can go early to see it-7PM on the night of the 31st. So excited! Also my wife brought these home tonight for my daughter and I to read:

Also here are some screenshots from the iOS game I've been playing all day:
Dalek Confirmed Father of the Year

The books contain a few interesting spoilers-there's a picture of Thanos's face. A drawing anyway but you get an idea of his look.

I dunno...I bought my daughter a Marvel Comics sub and put GotG on her reading list. Dalek is still awesome though, even if he is a super-evil robot.

My daughter is somewhat resilient to reading superhero comics, unless they star girls -even though I know she's interested. I've been starting her off small-My Little Pony comics and we read Thor The Mighty.

Will watch for Thanos.

...can it have Adam Warlock? Please?

Did you miss Thor 2?

;)

The iOS game has quite a few character cameos in it. Especially one of my favorites, Beta Ray Bill. So random but so awesome.

Was totally hyped to go see this in the movies but i will not do it.

Why? Because for some unknown reason Sweden decided to only show the 3d-version of it and that means a big NOPE! for me.

Eagerly awaiting the BR-release of it instead because it looks awesome!

I don't have any knowledge about GotG, so can anybody enlighten me on the mask Starlord wears on the covers you see on this page...?

Is the movie deviating from this, or is that just some kind of breath apparatus he sometimes wears, and he is also seen without mask in the graphic novels..?

I've read the stories from Annihilation through Thanos Imperative and I'm not sure if it's function ever really even came up, therefore I assume it's main function is to look cool. And yes, he can take it off in the comics.

It helps Star-Lord breathe in space (& I think it assists him in his aiming, but I need to double-check that), & it does look cool. Star-Lord does have the iconic mask in the movie, but no helmet (his hair is exposed). And yes, Star-Lord does take off the mask.

In other news...

Fun Fact: Dan Abnett wrote the story for the GotG game on iOS/Android.

I've seen the preview in 3D, it's actually pretty damn good.

Reading the current run on the Marvel Unlimited App. I hate I didn't find this book sooner. I is the pre-Marvel Now run worth reading?

It isn't free because it's completely IAP free. You should support more games with that mentality.
I think my post might have been less than clear. I'm happy to pay for $30 or $60 games, I was just wondering if this is actually a decent piece of software worth spending time and money on.

I had just assumed that it was a free piece of promotional software. If it is an actually worthwhile game then I am all the more pleased.

Yes, very much so, the whole thing.

Honestly, that image is the one big downside of the DNA run compared to Bendis'. The current run, while displaying all Bendis' flaws as a writer, is very consciously written so that you can jump in at the 0.1 or FCBD issues knowing literally nothing about the characters, whereas the Abnett/Lanning/Giffen era... Well, that's certainly possible, it's far from the most impenetrable superhero continuity porn I've ever read, but it does tend to presuppose not only that you read both Annihilation events, but that you're also reading most of the other cosmic books Marvel was putting out at the same time. And frankly, that's a lot of fuckin' comics to buy/read.

I've told this to all my friends who did the same thing.

If you're reading the Bendis run and enjoying it, you're going to shit your pants when you read the Abnett/Lanning run.

I don't think the Bendis run is nearly as bad as people make it out to be (just feel like it's treading water a bit too much), but holy god is the Abnett/Lanning run a modern classic of sci-fi comics.
