Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I didn't complain about the performance because I knew it was a beta still. The game did not run perfect for me and I'm sure I've got good enough hardware for this game.

Yeah it currently runs far from perfect. I think people haven't complained as much because the performance hasn't changed much from the 2nd bwe on. Also, every complaint has been met with the standard "we're constantly optimizing more and more as release approaches" so it's kind of pointless. They know it's not performing very well atm.

I have two bleeding-edge machines (i7 3770k and 680gtx) and they do not run perfectly. They run 'ok' part of the time, but it does not run at the level that hardware like that should push it.

As someone who was utterly bored of the gear hoarding and mob grinding that World of Warcraft became, I found the bits I've played of Guild Wars 2 to be refreshing. It sort of wants you to take your time and explore, to do your own thing.

Whereas if you took your time in WoW you'd quickly discover that no-one cared and if anyone noticed you it was to laugh at your scrub items. Unless you were a priest of any level, in which case they'd bow down and praise your amazing grey item farmer jackets in the hope you'd heal them sometime in the future.

Perhaps someone can answer this question for me: Is Guild Wars 2 like GW1? Because I thought GW1 was pretty awful.

I'm hoping GW2 is not like GW1 (pvp focused, boring PvE, heavily instanced with crowded city centers, only 5-6 armor models per class, heavily reliant on crafting rather than drops)

I never played the expansions, so I have no idea if those fixed any of those issues, but I found vanilla GW1 to be severely lacking.

It's not like Guild Wars 1 but only 5-6 armor models per class? There's like 5 in the original game not including expansions which add like 3-4 each..

Not at all. Actually a lot of the hardcore GW1 fanbase hates GW2 because it's so different.

GW2 is so different from GW1 that it often pisses off people who liked GW1, even when they give begrudging respect to GW2 for being awesome at what it does.

Not at all. The only instanced things in GW2 are nodes for crafting (THANK GOD FOR THIS), your own loot...and I can't think of anything else.

Otherwise, it's a full, breathing, living world that everyone is in like a true MMO.

I really wish there was an open beta for just a weekend. Videos do a horrible job of communicating whether or not the game is for me. After GW1, I'm very gun shy about buying anything by Arena Net.

Good. GW1 was fucking boring.

Unfortunately, I still have no idea if GW2 is for me. I wish there was some sort of open beta so I could at least try it out.

I know it's F2P, but can you guys explain why this game is such a big deal, over the other countless MMOs?

I am really into WoW (still), got bored with SWTOR real fast, and not sure if I should be excited for this game...

1. Don't have to wait 30 min in Queue for the dungeon finder because you are DPS, just need to find 4 more and you are ready to go because there isn't holy trinity, everyone must keep tab of their health, defensive cd and looking the enviroment to survive.

2. No subscription, so you are free to play it when you want and can take time away from the game to play new games without wasting your sub play time.

3. The game empathize in exploring, there are hidden challenges, skill points, places that you can find if you decide to.

4. You don't need to fight with other people to complete quest objectives, no kill/item stealing. everyone contribute to complete the quests (events in this case), and everyone receive rewards.

5. Multiple ways to complete quests, you can kill monsters, waters crops, taste beer, etc.

6. Its less gear based and more pay attention and play well.

7. There is Transmogrification so you can combine different design of armos, also the Dye system allow to make a lot of color combinations to personalize your character.

8. The Personal history is a series of events and a special zone in your race capital city where the choices you make in it are reflected in your special zone, its like a single player where you can take paths, take decisions and shape the history of your character.

9. WvWvW, World vs World vs World, Its a PvP zone where you take towers, castles, keeps and supply lines with siege weapons and blood, if PvP is your thing and don't want to lvl with PvE you can Lvl to 80 with WvW.

10. sPvP its easy to jump in, just create a lvl1 character, finish the tutorial zone, jump to the mist and you are scaled to lv80 with all the traits (like talents) and skills unlocked. You are provided with PvP gear. Tho the gear in sPvP isn't so important like in WoW arenas/PvP, the sPvP its more skill based, but you get gear rewards to change your look.

11. Jeremy Soule in charge of the music.

12. There are dynamic events that change the world, some town attacked by bad guys that if you fail to defend, they take control and you need to retake to free it for example, but also there are bigger events where you start doing some simple stuff and it evolves in fighting a giant shadow swamp boss.

13. The scale of the bosses are impressive:

14. The art direction is beautiful.

There is more but that is what i have in top of my head. The game is good and its a breath of fresh air after WoW and their clones.

It's not at all. Just check out some videos on Youtube, it's a completely different game which only shares story and a bit of gameplay accentuations, like the very limited quest bar (in terms of size, not skills). No instanced gameplay except for one questline (the personal story arc). I didn't like GW1 at all, and I love GW2.

I just remembered that my wife and I are going to the Bahamas on September 2nd. Goddamn you, ANet, you've just positioned this in such a way as to make going to the Bahamas seem like a nuisance. *shakes fist*

Thanks for the info guys! I will definitely be checking this out at some point.

edit: and goddamn @ those boss videos...I may be needing a new video card for this game haha

I already said earlier in the thread that I've watched a dozen videos, and I still can't tell if it's for me. Videos don't really do a very good job of explaining whether or not you'll like a game you'll be playing for 100's of hours.

The points that Vano made sound great, though.

I signed up for the beta ages ago, hoping to play it, and god dammit, I never got in. I would love to try out the game before I buy, but Arena Net is pretty dead set on not letting me do that.

Well now my brothers and sisters let us hold hands and sing! Wow this is really happening...i am so exited cant wait to play with you all.

"I'm hoping GW2 is not like GW1 (pvp focused, boring PvE, heavily instanced with crowded city centers, only 5-6 armor models per class, heavily reliant on crafting rather than drops)"

Yes, Yes, No, dunno, doesn't seem so.

I told a friend of mine about this and he was really bummed that it wouldn't come out until 3 days after his birthday... Then I reminded him that he had already prepurchased and secured a 3-day head start.

Took me a while to comprehend this thread title. I wonder if the last beta weekend we'll be able to roll higher level characters for higher level content. Or if they just wont bother wiping our characters before the bwe.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. The game does look pretty awesome. Maybe I'll do a little more digging and see if I can figure out if it's for me.

I wasn't saying the issues were completely gone, of course some machines are still having issues. But the difference in complaints from BWE1 to BWE2 were huge. Not just here but across the boards and on the official forums. Also they have said many times they are working from the ground up on optimization so most of the people having problems are the ones with the higher end machines.

Their focus from here on out seems to be completely focused on polish so I am sure that last bit of optimization will cover those with higher end machines. I've ran on an I52600k with a 570gtx and BWE ran well but not perfect for me and then withe BWE2 I never dipped below 60fps besides a couple small drops in wvw. Not everyone saw it, but there was a huge jump in performance between the two beta weekends.

This just made my day! Now I can't seem to get back to work mode =/

Excuse my ignorance as I may a bit late/early on this but has there been any talk of a GAF guild?

I'm shocked they announced the date. I was expecting two more BWEs at the very least. Awesome news to wake up to, but I really hope they made a lot of progress for BWE3. They have quite a few issues to work out.

I remember reading on GAF that someone believed that the BWE builds were weeks/months behind closed beta builds.

Someone *always* says that in every MMO thread. Though there's probably truth in it, people put their faith in that excuse way too much.

July 20-22 is the third and final BWE. It was in the ANet blog, they should have probably put that in the video or something.

As for optimization, I'm guessing it will be ironed out for the few still having problems in the last bwe. I saw far less people complaining about the issues in the last beta and for a lot(me included) the game ran perfect.

My vote: no

Wasn't there talks of going to one of the newer servers that started with an N?
I thought it was a server that started with "G" - so Gates of Madness.

Seen a couple of UK people saying something along of the lines of "yessss, Bank Holiday Weekend!"

The BH Weekend is 25th/26th/27th right? With the release date of this game being the day after the BH weekend.

Or am I missing something?

3 day head start?

wow, seems crazy to think the end (or beginning?) is almost here. just wondering, has anyone ran this on a macbook pro, mid 2010 (or similar spec.)? mine's an i7 2.6ghz, with 4gb of ram and a nvidia 330m videocard. any idea of the performance?

Guild Wars 1 was very VERY forgiving for hardware requirements. Despite it looking gorgeous, you could run it on just about anything. I'm assuming that GW2 is going to continue this trend.

The game runs like shit no matter what specs you have. The current beta build isn't optimized at all yet. Still CPU bound and chugs with my GTX 680.

Hee hee, my wife won a $25 gift card for Amazon.com through her work. Guild Wars 2 is now pre-ordered.

I have a feeling I betted for August but I honestly can't remember if I canceled it or not due to my lack of Canadian credit card at the time.

I was so sure the Stress Test yesterday would let me figure out what class I want to play as my main. Narrowed it down to Engineer or Elementalist, as I like the high number of skills available for the two. Also, as much as I loved Warrior, melee seems to be at a disadvantage in WvWvW and the rifle lacks AoE to really assist against an attacking force.

Still, at about level 10 each, I had two issues:

I hated how squishy the Elementalist is in PvE and the lack of crowd control. Did wonders in PvP as I actually managed to score kills defending/attacking.

I hated how pitiful my Engineer's damage is in PvP. Throwing grenades at an attacking force did almost nothing. Barely got "XP" for kills. On the flip side, I can easily manhandle several enemies at once in PvE.

There is no winning for me. Can someone who has played up to higher levels let me know if it gets better for either of those classes. Feel like being level 10 didn't really help as I didn't even have access to traits.
