Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

These appear to just be short little clips of ArenaNet staff reiterating and showcasing bullet points from the Manifesto video, but with more examples, confidence and a firmer footing. If the Manifesto video was "This is what we want to do" or even "This is what we've done but we can't talk about it yet", these videos are "We did it, this is happening, come get some in a month" (Colin's "Guild Wars 2 has the most replayability of any MMO ever made, period, doesn't even come close" would, in certain academic circles, be considered mighty strong words).

A month. After years of waiting.

Nerd Chills.

It's basically accessible PR. Most of what said is true, but stuff like Dynamic Events having true consequences are combat being unique isn't completely true. Dynamic Events repeat, and I've not seen a massive affect on the world. We're pretty low level though.

And, yeah, you can combo skills. WoW seem spretty similar though, in terms of combat, but I don't know if dodging is implemented into the game.

WoW seem pretty similar though

I haven't played WoW for very long (relatively speaking; I put a few hours into it), but between what I did play -- and a few of its derivatives -- GW2 is clearly a breed apart. Even the mindset going into encounters is different.

Nerd Chills.

Glad I'm not alone in this symptom.

I think the worst part about anticipating a game is that all other games seem less interesting. I just got AC:Revelations (I love the AC series) and haven't put much time into it. Just got over the Steam sale and got some games I've been wanting to try (New Vegas on the top of the list) ... yet haven't even installed them.

It's not a hype thing, it's a preference thing, I'd rather be playing this game than others even though this is not a choice at the moment. There's gotta be some psychological term to describe this.

anyone else trying to go for there 30/50 on GW 1 hall of monumnets in prep for GW2?

I'm going for it myself IGN Jermiah Knut if anyone wants to join in / help out / contribute.

MMO-itis. I feel that way whenever I find a new main MMO. It basically keeps me from buying other games for years.

EDIT: Scratch that. I'm calling it MMO FEVER.

Damn, Asuran armor really looks the same for both sexes all the time, huh? I hoped the poster thingie might not be indicative of all of'em, but yeah. Disappointing for me :/

Asuras have equality in gender! Female Asura don't need sexiness ala showing skin or bikini top, they only need their brains!

Yeah that was weird, i guess if that stay in release, then they have a reason like that one, i don't think they got lazy and didn't want to scale/model the female armor on the female Asuras.

Lets save my post by posting this video showing Dungeon sets on all races M and F.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEJDW8KjVos

And this that shows Dungeon weapons:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up1hdT6slTM

Wow, those are really awesome looking dungeon sets.

My question, how do you acquire them? Obviously running the dungeons but do you save points for each time you do it or are there chests and stuff?

Another question: Regarding weapon switching, is it only between 2 different sets in combat? Can I have multiple sets like sword/board, greatsword, double axe, ranged and be able to switch them easily while out of combat? What is considered 'in combat' .. could I do it in WvW let's say, running out somewhere or in sPVP?

I'm picking it up, so I'll definitely jump on Gandara. Better than randomly picking a server because the name sounds cool.

Gandara was randomly picked because the name starts with "G".

I'm sure a few guilds in TA probably experienced the same shit we did on GoM and aren't going there.

Well, their whole thing is that they roll as a group. I get the feeling they're still deciding. Whatever server they (or any large community / alliance) rolls on, we won't be there if we can help it. We don't want to wait until a week before launch, of course, but we do want to wait a bit and see what happens with those groups.

It's basically accessible PR. Most of what said is true, but stuff like Dynamic Events having true consequences are combat being unique isn't completely true. Dynamic Events repeat, and I've not seen a massive affect on the world. We're pretty low level though.

Yep, as you say, it's all about the level. Queensdale repeated a lot, both because it's a starter zone and because the repeat rate was bumped up for testing purposes. I imagine when the events start turning into chains, and the chains start turning into webs (as they're supposed to in later zones) we'll see a but more permanence and less repetition overall.

Combat is unique, at least among recent AAA MMOs (by that, I mean that I don't care if Korean F2P sensation "xXDragonCrystal~*~QuestVilleXx" has realtime combat). Only TERA comes close and that still has you stopping and standing still to attack.

And no, WoW definitely doesn't have dodging. The awkward run/strafe/jump dance that PVPers do to try and get out of your attack range doesn't count as 'dodging' any more than having an epileptic seizure on a dance floor counts as 'dancing'. No cross-profession combos either, last time I checked. Maybe in layering all of those skills on over the years they accidentally made two that can some how sync up, but it shouldn't count if it's an inept, happy mistake.

I think the worst part about anticipating a game is that all other games seem less interesting.

IKnowThatFeelBro.jpg

I've got Arkham City and Skyward Sword from last year still sitting unfinished. I keep restarting in Dark Souls so I never get anywhere. I still have Borderlands DLC to play. Arken gifted me Dungeon Defenders and I haven't touched it yet. Not to mention I'm almost always in the middle of replaying something (the latest was Final Fantasy Tactics).

I have stuff I could play... but I just don't want to.

Scratch that. I'm calling it MMO FEVER.

You can't call it that, it's too similar to PacMan Fever.

btw in WvW , what's the difference between the /map and /team chat?

As near as I could tell, none. Team Chat didn't seem to extend beyond the map you were in (and I imagine it would get rather chatty if it did). I noticed people generally kept saying to use Team Chat, though there was never any good reason. Maybe they thought it was visible by the other teams? I dunno.

Have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the medium armors: all of them are made with rangers/rogues (thinking of rolling an engineer here) in mind
and the light/heavy variants are better looking imo. I was also hoping Sylvari would have more plant-like sets.

Yeah, the medium armor didn't seem quite as interesting as the other two. Oh well, there's always transmutation stones.

As for Sylvari armor, this was just dungeon stuff, and there's only one Sylvari-themed Dungeon (the Twilight Arbor). There will still be Cultural Armor: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cultural_Armor

My question, how do you acquire them? Obviously running the dungeons but do you save points for each time you do it or are there chests and stuff?

I'm guessing there are chests and such that do drop loot, but not these themed armor/weapon sets. Those you buy with tokens. The amount needed seems absurdly high, but I've also seen Karma vendors with items over 50k in price. I have a feeling you'll get plenty of both as the game goes on. I highly doubt they'll give you one token for defeating a boss as they do in something like WoW.

Weapon Swap can only be done between two sets in combat (or none if you're an engineer or elementalist). You can carry as many weapons as you want (my warrior did exactly this), but you can't equip them if you're in combat. If you're not fighting or manage to get away, then yes, you can equip new weapons from your inventory.

Yeah that was weird, i guess if that stay in release, then they have a reason like that one, i don't think they got lazy and didn't want to scale/model the female armor on the female Asuras.

I don't want 'sexy' per se (doesn't fit Asura much anyway), but I want at least see a bit of a difference :/ It probably isn't lazyness, but it sure feels like it.

After you run a dungeon in explorable mode you get tokens, the quantity is supposed to be have been modified after the BWE2 so we need to wait to release to know the real quantity that is given but you save enough and you buy the items you want.

Tho if i remember correctly, after you clear Story mode, you get a piece of the set (in the case of Ascalon Catacombs, was the head)

I don't want 'sexy' per se (doesn't fit Asura much anyway), but I want at least see a bit of a difference :/ It probably isn't lazyness, but it sure feels like it.

Yeah i would have liked a different design too but that decision of give them the same set seems deliberate if it indeed stays as that in the release.
Also wish the Light armor were available to see the complete sets in this BWE3 :(

EDIT: Scratch that. I'm calling it MMO FEVER.

MMO Anticipatory Prejudice, or MMOAP for short, because all we do is 'mope' around until launch and have adjusted views on other games.

EDIT: Thanks for the answers. Are there multiple sets of armor for PVP also like the dungeon sets? Like lvl 30, 45, etc ... ?

I might stick to a cultural armor's skin forever since most of the dungeons sets aren't plant-ish enough (planning to play a Sylvari here).
Found a gallery of all the available ones for all the races here. Now those look much better!

I personally like that the Asura and Charr have very subtle differences between genders. Charr especially, they're as distinct as lions and lionesses. Likewise, the Asura seem very asexual. Hell, they probably have some kind of crazy device that takes all the muss and fuss out of reproduction so they can spend more time building other crazy devices.

And frankly, the idea of 'sexy' Asura is a little unsettling... that would be like... little children with big ears, dressed in mini-skirts and cleavage-revealing outfits. Who would have a race as creepy as that?

Not hugely fond of the armor sets I've seen, so I'll probably find something running around the world that I think represents my characters well and transmute everything from then on.

On a serious note, can you use the transmutation stone between different kinds of armor or are you forced to use it on the same typology?
I mean, is it possible to take the stats from a medium one and merge them with a heavy/light armor look?

Uguu~~, man, that is such a interesting design, TERA female desing are so over the top.

Same type.

Haha, MMOAP is actually quite clever. As far as PVP sets go, they've said there are different cosmetic sets you can unlock to show off what a badass you are. Pretty sure it's based on rank.

Yeah, I can definitely sympathize with wanting to keep a specific look. I'll want a lot of leathery stuff with exposed skin for my Norn Warrior. I'd actually go bare chested if I could (don't worry, actually planning to break with tradition and roll a Male this time).

And nice find on the Cultural sets. I like that the Human Heavy Tier 3 is basically Logan Thackray's gear. That Norn Heavy Tier 3 is looking mighty nice too.

Not hugely fond of the armor sets I've seen, so I'll probably find something running around the world that I think represents my characters well and transmute everything from then on.

Right, I'll definitely want to find a look that suits my tastes rather than just wear full tier set "because it's the best". I have specific looks in mind for my characters and you can bet your sweet bippy I'll be spending a lot of time hunting down just the right pieces (and then hours dyeing them).

No. You can only transmute gear of the same armor class. I know, I'm kinda bummed about it too. I was hoping I could get a medium armor Trench Coat for my Guardian.

Ok thanks, guess it makes sense. Seems I'll be really stuck with cultural armors then, not that it looks like a bad thing.

I'm sure there will be tons of armor to pick through besides cultural and dungeon-based sets that can be combined, dyed and transmuted to get just the look you want. And it's not like they won't add more in later. If there's one thing MMOs are good at, it's giving you lots of items to chase down. Hell, if you had told me in 2005 that WoW would have shoulder pads with unicycle-riding torch-juggling kangaroos on them, I wouldn't have believed you. Here in 2012 I'd say "Wow, they're going back to subtle shoulder designs?" The difference between those and GW2 is that you're more concerned with aesthetics than stats.

I don't want 'sexy', I just want differences in armor design. They can't be THAT asexual due to various reasons. I don't really know where you base that "muss and fuss" argument on :)

Do the Charr armors have visible differences?

Wow. So many different armours.

I can't wait to see all the armours you can get from Crafting! I was only able to get the Leatherworking up to 100 the BWE and it seemed like there was new type of armour every 25 levels, so since there are 400 levels, there could be possibly be 16 more sets. Ofcourse not every set is max level but with transumation stones you can keep the look of a low set if you really like it and still have the high stats.

Right, it was more of a tongue in cheek comment than anything... but no, it doesn't appear there will be much difference between genders for Asura Cultural amor. Check out the link Naito posted; http://www.guildwars2guru.com/news/680-racial-armor-extravaganza to see for yourself.

As for "Muss and Fuss" comment, I guess the joke is that the Asura are more interested in inventing things than reproduction so they'd theoretically invent a device to do it for them without the 'mess' of traditional reproduction.

You know what? It wasn't that funny and this is getting weird. And I still don't think we've managed to work past the pedo-tastic creeper discussion about Asura Hentai from a few days ago. What is this, a Tera thread?

Looking at the plate armor at the aforementioned link, it does not appear so.

Ah damn, I forgot that crafted armor has unique looks too. Thanks for the reminder... so, wow... there's actually the potential for a TON of different armor designs.

Anyone know what the treatment for MMOAP is again? I may have triggered a flare up of symptoms due to over-medicating on "The Kool-Aid."

I don't want 'sexy', I just want differences in armor design. They can't be THAT asexual, cause...

I will kill you. I will roll on another server just to hunt you down in WvW, cut you to pieces, and pee on your corpse.

Seriously, edit that out.

EDIT: I'm exaggerating my anger, FWIW, but there are people here who have saved the Personal Storylines for after launch.

Don't worry, I'm sure it's not what you think. Chances are it's just some Pygmalion-esque story of love between an Asura and his Golem.

Haha, I just think we just got our wires crossed :D If there's one thing I don't want, it's sexy Asura ^^

No worries, all is fine :)

edit: Oh god sorry, edited! Didn't realize this could be taken spoiler-y, I'm so sorry! Retro, please edit it out of your quote as well :(

The racial armor seems awfully cheap from the link you posted, Retro.

Never said it wasn't. It's the Dungeon stuff that's expensive. I would imagine the cultural stuff is a mid-level gold sink for people who want to maintain a certain look. 20g a piece is pretty steep, I didn't spend any money and I think the highest I ever had was 50 silver.

Haha, I just think we just got our wires crossed :D If there's one thing I don't want, it's sexy Asura ^^

"Getting our wires crossed" sounds like Asura innuendo.

I was wondering, are ranks only achievable in sPVP and are they based on a ladder system or playtime?

It's cool. But I think we need to be careful what we reveal about the Personal Storylines as they're really the biggest area for potential spoilers when it comes to this game. And there are some people who care about that.

I truly don't. But some do.

Retro, please edit it out of your quote as well :(

Done.

I was wondering, are ranks only achievable in sPVP and are they based on a ladder system or playtime?

The wiki was no help, so I can't say for sure and sPVP isn't something I've been following. If I had to guess though, I would say Ranks are an sPVP and I highly doubt it will be based on playtime though.

So if I said Zhaitan is actually the love child of Queen Jennah and Rytlock Brimstone, that would ruin the game for you?

I truly don't. But some do.

Party-pooper.

So some of the armor sets are closed off based on performance in sPVP? I'm just curious as to what I will and will not have actual access to.

I'm hoping we get a team together of people who will sPVP often as that will be probably what occupies my time endgame (besides WvW and alts of course)

I'll play sPVP but not to the extent that I'll be able to take on Team Paradigm, Super Squad, or Mostly Harmless folks. Would be fun to play against them at some point, though.

I think it's based on wins in tournaments.

Yep, that makes the most sense to me. Why anyone would ever award players for going afk during a PVP match is beyond me, you think somebody would realize how bad of an idea that is before they even imple-

You know what? It's just too easy at this point and it's not helping to pass the time anyways.

I'm hoping we get a team together of people who will sPVP often as that will be probably what occupies my time endgame (besides WvW and alts of course)

I'm willing to give it a try. I *hated* Arenas in WoW, and even though sPVP looks to be more like smaller versions of Battlegrounds then Arenas, I'm still apprehensive about smaller scale PVP. I actually didn't mind Battlegrounds, but I could only play them for so long before I wanted to start screaming in BG chat about fighting on roads, leaving the flags, fighting in the middle, etc.

Then again, my big gripe with Arenas was the grind for PVP gear, the constant Flavor of the Month teams and the generally broken jump-strafe dance and pillar hump tactics used because true strategy could never get past "Burn the healer, we win". The combat and gear setup in GW2 will at least remove two of those gripes, and I have faith in ArenaNet to get things closer to balanced than, say, Blizzard.

Yeah, I don't know how serious I'll be either, but a regular group to run with is what makes it fun (win or lose). That was my problem in WoW, we'd win, get up there about to break 1800/1900 and then BAM, big losing streak and partner/team would dismantle.

Losing sucks, I know that ... but it's part of the game!

Plus, I'm completely new to GW2 (and 1 for that matter) and am learning so I'm sure I'll probably be the weakest link lol.

EDIT: good news about equivalent PVE sets!

Has this been posted?

Yeah, I'm not overly concerned about losing. So long as I think my team and I performed well. If someone beats me straight out, they were just better - and there's no shame in that.

GW2 is really its own animal, so experience with GW isn't really that important, short of some of the lore references. As long as you put yourself in harm's way often and early when you get into GW2, you'll be fine.

I am fairly sure that at least most of the sPvP armor sets and weapons share skins with PvE equivalents.

Most likely, yes, but since everyone is thrown into generic armor, the only way to get a unique look is through getting new PVP armor. So re-skins are unfortunate, but they will still stand out a bit.

Yeah, I'm not overly concerned about losing. So long as I think my team and I performed well. If someone beats me straight out, they were just better - and there's no shame in that.

Yep, I can live with that too. My experience in WvW has taught me that whoever wins in PvP won because they're a skilled player, not because the game mechanics allowed them to (as it was in Arenas where gear grind + FotM determined victory).

That, and knockback skills on a cliff are fun.

New videos!

Awesome, watching them as soon as I post this.

Now im undecided between rolling on the EU or US servers :(

Welcome to my world. :(

I hope some of you EU players will be doing a fair bit of WvW. I don't want to regret not picking the US server!

I feel like I'll let down my fellow EU GAFers if I don't roll EU... seriously, guesting is the best thing ever; without it the decision would be unbearable rather than inconveniencing.

Often in the beta while fighting mobs's, they would become invincible (or evade every attack) and would return to their starting spot and completely heal up. Is this a bug or some kind of anti kiting mechanic? It happened alot when playing range with my thief as I would kite enemies into traps and such. But after you kite them far enough they would often just reset and fully heal even though they were being attacked the entire time. Happened constantly in the beta.... wondering if it's intentional mechanic or something

There's two mechanics, anti-kiting and anti-sniping. You seem to be describing a mix of both.
Anti-kiting is designed to avoid people pulling mobs way outside their intended place and therefore starving others of them. This will make some memorable stuff like Gamon and Devilsaur world traveling impossible (although zones already made it so), but in the end it's probably for the best. GW2 also has more complex and scripted mob behavior (mobs that do stuff, kidnap people, steal things, flee when their collective morale is depleted) so I'm guessing taking all of that into account without leashing would be a nightmare of extraordinary magnitude.

The awesome thing compared to WoW is that, in WoW, a "leashing back" mob becomes invulnerable and instantly regenerates all health (it seems like it's gradual but it's a visual effect: it will regain all health before you can hit it again). This is particularly terrible when it's a boss that does it (often as a result of a bug). In Guild Wars 2, however, mobs slowly regain health and you can pick them up again without either waiting for them to go "back home" nor them regenerating much health. This not only makes it more convenient, it makes it more immersive; rather than a really jarring game mechanic, it just looks exactly as the out-of-combat regeneration all players have.

However, I don't think I saw any instances of both happening at once. I did see mobs leash back to where I found them, healing along the way, but I could still injure them as I gave chase.

What Retro said. The invulnerability comes from anti-sniping, not anti-kiting; it's there to avoid a much clearer exploit, and therefore makes sense to make the mob invulnerable and instantly heal it (as otherwise you could snipe until the game realizes it, wait for the mob to go back, then repeat until it's dead).

Damn, Asuran armor really looks the same for both sexes all the time, huh? I hoped the poster thingie might not be indicative of all of'em, but yeah. Disappointing for me :/

Charr armor seems to be the same, only colorized slightly differently by default. I think it makes sense, as they're both the two races with least sexual dimorphism, and two of the three that have exclusive models for armor. Human and Sylvari have different armor for each sex but each sex is the same among both races. The spoiled children seem, oddly enough, to be the Norn, which seem to have armor that's unique to both race AND gender.

Wow, those are really awesome looking dungeon sets.

My question, how do you acquire them? Obviously running the dungeons but do you save points for each time you do it or are there chests and stuff?

Good question; I don't know if there's chests or even mob drops in dungeons. Anyone knows?

Another question: Regarding weapon switching, is it only between 2 different sets in combat? Can I have multiple sets like sword/board, greatsword, double axe, ranged and be able to switch them easily while out of combat? What is considered 'in combat' .. could I do it in WvW let's say, running out somewhere or in sPVP?

Not (yet), but equipping different weapons is quite easy, thanks to the Hero panel (which already only shows what items you can wear on the left) and the fact that you can right click the item and select "wear on main hand" or "wear on off hand".

It's basically accessible PR. Most of what said is true, but stuff like Dynamic Events having true consequences are combat being unique isn't completely true. Dynamic Events repeat, and I've not seen a massive affect on the world. We're pretty low level though.

I disagree. I've seen a farm taken over by bandits, kicking the NPCs (even vendors) out of it: they stay that way until someone beats the bandits. Obviously, the farm won't stay saved forever (who would want that!), but if it's overrun, and nobody helps, it could stay that way for hours or days.

One thing I noticed watching the armor video was that female Asura are more chubby and rounded, which is cute. Actually, I wasn't expecting some female Asura people have posted pics of to be so adorable. Male Asura are quite cool and much less stereotypical than I expected.

And frankly, the idea of 'sexy' Asura is a little unsettling... that would be like... little children with big ears, dressed in mini-skirts and cleavage-revealing outfits. Who would have a race as creepy as that?

Zing!

After reading more of the thread, I can't be the only one that got your jab at Tera right away, can I?
God, I wish I didn't even know about Tera. Even remembering it gives me the creeps.

Their single target damage is just a little low and related to that they don't have a ton of viable builds. One of the devs said in an interview several pages back they need some love so they'll be getting buffed before launch. Their staff is great AoE damage and they're tough as nails to kill (death shroud basically gives you a secondary health bar).

I played a sylvari necro for the entire beta 3 just about and had a blast. She's probably going to be my main alt.
