Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I'm in NYC, so meeting nerdy girls isn't hard. I have a hard time finding any that I'm compatible with. For me, most of my prospects have been interracial dating with girls that have had hang ups with their families. I should get back to looking, with NY Comic-con coming up, and PAX East next year.

Find love at NY Comic-con!

Fun fact: I signed my brother and I up for this (mostly for him since he can't stop making nerdy references around people) and they picked me to audition for the show. During the phone interview the woman told me that I was too social and not "geeky" enough to be on the show. :-/

This is... painful to watch. At the same time, interesting. The Star Wars guy looked more than decent to me, but this is coming from a guy. I'd probably also be considered too social or not geeky enough to be on the show.

It's actually on the (very short) list, and we had a nice member of their community post on our thread.
The thing about Henge is that once more of GAF gets going, and more people understand the mechanics, it will get better. I was on Henge through almost all of the BWE3 and during the Stress Test and I played on WvW here and there, and all throughout the Stress Test. The two most important things are presence and coordination, and the nice thing about the people on Henge is that I kept running into people who were willing to listen to me, to run with me and my group of friends, to travel together and take stuff down together. They're willing and able, but need a leader. And I was more than willing to lead them.

I actually wouldn't mind becoming an officer of WvW for the GAF guild. Otherwise most of my WvW time will be spent with my guild of close friends.

Are there any screenshots of characters decked in imba gear? One of the reasons I like MMO's is to pimp up my character, so it better look nice!

Checking gafguild.com, shouldn't there be a section for WvW discussion?
There's a general PvP section. Perhaps it would be good to divide the two PvP modes since I'm sure we will have people who will only do one or the other.

Topic of Server:
I would not over-think it since there will be dramatic shifts within the first few months. I can imagine top WvWvW alliances switching between seasons. I am more inclined to find a med-high pop server just for the economy. More people usually means lower prices due to availability. But there will be shifts there, too. Rock/hard place.

I honestly dont expect the huge alliances to move at all unless its to a brand new server because they couldnt get all of their people into the one they wanted. It simply would cost too much money and be a complete pain trying to get everyone in an alliance on an already existing server. I doubt there would be enough room if arenanet has done their job right in terms of the amount of servers available

We'd have to link you to every piece of gear in the game because you can wear anything you want within your armor weight class or weapon type your class can use. So you can take the skin from say one chest piece and combine it with the stats from another to make the exact piece of armor you want.

The Trading Post is global so that's not exactly going to work. :-p

I've seen huge guilds move in other MMOs so money isnt an issue, apparently. Even when they were on great servers they would still move for whatever reason. I'm just basing my thoughts on my experiences. It seems that when it makes the least sense - that's when it happens ha!

I think Ferrio would have a conniption if we went with Henge. And it truly was bad at WvW

That was during the Betas, but it does give the server a certain stigma. Our concern with Henge at this point is actually its extremely low population. We see two results; either it remains a low pop server post launch, or a major Alliance picks it so they can effectively rule the server.

Here's a video (see description for the links to specific races): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEJDW8KjVos

That's just the dungeon gear. There's also race-specific "Cultural Armor", armor sets you can get via renown regions, regular old-fashioned drops, and crafting.

Oh, and Legendary weapons (like a unicorn bow that shoots rainbows, a hammer that causes you to appear as if you're made of liquid metal, and a pair of greatswords that look like the day / night sky, amongst others)

Checking gafguild.com, shouldn't there be a section for WvW discussion?

We didn't want to create a billion sub-forums because those tend to become scattered. That's why there's a "Professions Forum" with tags for each profession, rather than a forum for each profession. We figured it was better to have 5 sub-forums with 10 posts each than 10 sub-forums with 5 posts each.

That said, I just mentioned to Ferny the possibility of having SPVP and WvW tags in the PVP Subforum so people can quickly find the content they're looking for.

It's only been up a week and we already have 129 members and over 1000 posts across 57 threads. We just added the Shoutbox, got the events calendar up, and are slowly tweaking /adding features. Plus we're having our server discussion.

LMFAO! This is what happens when I only research professions for my blackout. Hell I just learned yesterday about custom soundtracks ha!

I guess I should read more into the game but want to avoid spoiling anything character related. Probably a good idea lol.

The forum replacing the GAFGuild thread in community, correct?

Not at all, as there will still be lots of people who want to discuss the game without joining the guild (i.e rolling on other servers, etc.). The WoW community thread doesn't focus on a single GAF Guild, neither will the GW2 one. It just seems that way since the people excited for GW2 are predominantly the ones joining the GAF Guild.

Eventually, all OTs transition to the Community side too.

I'll probably just do most of my posting on GAF. Unless no one else does.

Exactly. The GAFGuild.com site is for organizing and community building. I don't think the mods would appreciate the 1000 posts we've made over the last week that boil down to nothing more than "What race/class you guys playing" and a bit of off-topic chatter driving up the post count for this thread. People who don't want to be a part of the guild don't need the thread to devolve into guild-centric conversation.

I was just saying, having an OT which will comprise the bulk of the discussion of Guild Wars on GAF, a GAFGuild thread, and a GAFGuild forums seems like it's spreading things a bit thin, yamean?

It's more a result of our being extremely pro-active. The Community thread as it exists now is mostly because we were given the go-ahead by the mods to get GAF organized for BWEs and such. As we get closer to launch:

The OT goes up a week before launch, at which point this thread will be locked. The OT exists to get information out there to people who are interested and have questions and general discussion.

The Community thread continues to be a way for GAFers to find each other and focuses more on discussion of in-game stuff without build guild-specific.

The GAFGuild.com site is guild-centric, so the Community OT isn't an insanely fast-moving micro-community (for example, look at how many OTs HaloGAF has and how fast their threads move).

A bit thin yes, but as I said; proactive. Once the OT is retired to the community thread, the one that exists now will cease to be and all guild business will be on GAFGuild.com.

Well I plan to be in the gaf guild so maybe I will have to just use that site.

How does mumble work, btw? What information do I need (server, etc?)

I get what you are saying, but I'm really not concerned about it.

Every couple days you get someone asking "So, what race/class is everyone gonna play", or takes a poll on what MMOs people have played before and why they quit, and that's great, but it tends to clutter up this thread, and its a bit hard to look backwards and see if the question has already been asked recently. Also, you have people who want to talk about the latest news about... ahem... other popular MMOs (and a few non-MMOs that created a lot of heated discussion these last few months), which ends up pissing people off, and catching the attention of fans of the other games (and possibly mods), and is ultimately not really on topic.

The point is there are things we want to discuss with each other, because we've formed a community, but not everything we want to talk about is entirely on topic to this thread or the community thread, or might be so specific and detailed that it runs the risk of dominating this thread. The GAFGuild forum is a much better place for those kinds of discussions, because it lets you filter for the individual conversation, instead of having to balance 4-5 individual conversations at once. The only downside is, we get a lot less Retro mega-replies now that he is posting on gafguild.com.

I thought the gafguild.com site would be just so we can bitch about WoW like 12 year olds! I'm very disappointed now :(

No, I get that. The GAFGuild forum makes sense. I just thought it would be immediately replacing the current community thread and all of GW2's presence on GAF would be contained solely within the imminent GW2 OT.

Nice video, it all makes sense. I prefer to keep my dodge to space bar, not a bad idea on the mouse scroll though.

My pinky finger rests on shift when I'm rocking WASD, so I've been putting Dodge there. Mouse Wheel is for Push-to-Talk so I can move, dodge, attack and scream for more chocolate milk at the same time.

Well I plan to be in the gaf guild so maybe I will have to just use that site.

It's not a bad idea to register, if only for the events calendar so you can see what kind of stuff we have planned. There isn't a calendar in-game, so that will have to do until they eventually get around to one.

As for mumble, the info is;
Server: atl.eoreality.net
Port: 64742
Use your GAF name as your nick.

Edit:
Probably should add that we tend to congregate in the Lovenasium rather than the root 'lobby'. Doesn't appear to be anyone on at the moment except me and Arksy, and I'm AFK since I've gotta take off shortly.
Edit 2: yes, we have a room called the Lovenasium, was just testing admin powers and haven't bothered to change it.

So the GAFGuild community thread will be a month long buffer and when the OT moves to community things will be as I thought: the GW2 OT in community and the GAFGuild forum which is off site?

That seems to be the way GAF works, yes.

Thanks. I've registered, just haven't posted.

Edit: Mumble question: I go to settings and set to "Push to talk." But how do I set which button is to be pushed?

Edit2: Ah. Shortcuts

Pretty much yeah , the GW2 will eventually go to the community section anyway. So once that happens, the existing community thread now won't really be needed as most of that will be over at the guild site.

Thanks. I've registered, just haven't posted.

Yep, and you really don't *have* to either if that's not your cup of tea. But we did want to give people a place where they could chat a little more (since we don't want to go off-topic in this thread too much, as per GAF rules) and get to know each other. Same idea as the Mumble Meet-and-Greet (which we need to have another one of soon); meet the GAFers you'll be playing alongside for the next few years.

I think with wvw some of the fault lies with Anet. There's no really no clear indication of what to do and if there was, I totally missed it. I mean I got the gist of it having played some warhammer. If i didn't read up on it at all I wouldn't know that siege weapons need catapults and bashing a door is useless with just your char weapons. It seems to me that small groups are a lot more effective than just staying with the main zerg and beating on a door.

Plus people are getting used to playing a whole new game with whole new mechanics. I was pretty good at pvp in wow even before warlocks got stronger in their first class patch and just totally sucked it up with a necro.

Point is, I agree with you. New strats will evolve for both classes and wvw in general. Plus it's a lot more fun playing the underdog. Dominating all the time will be boring as fuck as the victory just seems hallow.

I also felt like I had to turn off double tap to dodge, and bind it to something. I use my mouse thumb button (which doesn't interfere with push to talk since I use ctrl with my left pinky for that). The thing that got me to unbind double tap was when I was trying creep up to a ledge and accidentally dodged off.

Im using a controller so it was absolutely necessary to turn off double tap since I kept on dodging by just turning directions

I feel double tap dodge has to be turned off if you plan on doing any of the jump puzzles....hell, even vistas. I forgot to do this in the stress test the other day and learned really quick to turn that crap off and assign keys.

One of the biggest improvements is that the chest armor is actually modeled to fit all of the races, rather than just a texture they apply over their chest like a shirt.

Random question: how many players do you need to actually set up a guild?

One player, at the cost of 1 silver for a 50 member guild. You can then speak to a Guild Registrar and pay a fee to increase your guild's size;

100 Members = 1 silver
200 Members = 10 silver
300 Members = 1 gold (or 100 silver)
400 Members = 1 gold
500 Members = 2 gold

Obviously that may change after launch, but all of the Officers and GMs are going to make that a priority. Any donations the guild wants to make would be appreciated, but if those numbers don't change we shouldn't need to rush to 500 right away.

ProTip: Turn off "double tap to dodge" when completing jumping puzzles, or you'll end up with as fine of an appreciation for the taste of floor as Retro.

I remember doing the one with the spikes and flames in the Charr(?) starting area - double tap to roll into spikes :p

Quickly changed my binds after that.

He meant that on first read, he thought your fiancee accepted your "deal" and decided to give up her favorite hobbies just to get you to quit gaming. Mutually assured destruction is a terrible thing.

Yep, that was it. I thought you both went along with it, each giving up their hobbies. Imagine my horror.

It's even better with the left bumper on a gamepad. Oh yeah.

Or right bumper. :)

My pinky finger rests on shift when I'm rocking WASD, so I've been putting Dodge there. Mouse Wheel is for Push-to-Talk so I can move, dodge, attack and scream for more chocolate milk at the same time.

By the way, push-to-talk was a control I totally didn't account for in my gamepad mappings. I'm used to "voice-level activated", which has never been a problem whether on Ventrilo, Teamspeak or even Steam voice chat, but somehow it seems that voice activation threshold can't be changed in Mumble.

Thing is, I'm not sure where to map push-to-talk, as it has to be an accessible combination. I'm almost sure it's going to share a binding with another action (i.e. whatever that action is, it's going to activate voice chat as well). Things I've considered include:
1) Bind it to the jump button (A). This has the disadvantage of me jumping like a madman every time I want to talk, and of me activating voice chat for a fraction of second when I jump.
2) Bind it to Interact (RB+A). This is slightly more cumbersome, but does no visible action if there's nothing there. Disadvantages is it activating each time I loot/talk to an NPC/interact with an item.

I don't know, still thinking it over. Anyone (particularly those using gamepads) has thought about this? I also don't have a clue how noticeable it is that I activate voice chat for a split second; I will check tomorrow if Mumble allows one to listen to oneself and check how noticeable it is.

I think with wvw some of the fault lies with Anet. There's no really no clear indication of what to do and if there was, I totally missed it.

They recently added to each WvW area (right in front of the place you appear when you first port to it) an NPC with lots of information about the mode. I didn't check it thoroughly as it seemed quite encyclopaedic (nested menus and so on), but I'm guessing it will be at the very least good enough for a primer (if a bit too much infodump-like). I would not be surprised if they replace it with something more friendly.

Whoa, that's much cheaper than I expected. Prices pretty much plateau after 300 members, that's cool.

I did the sylvari starter zone jumping puzzle with double tap still on and I only ever accidentally dodged one time and it wasn't even off the puzzle. I may have more trouble with a jumping puzzle that requires more timing.

It's not mine to annouce of course, but just to preface any further discussion, it would seem that a server has been elected, right?
