Every Saturday at 9pm we run guild missions, and since you are new you probably haven't done them but if you want to try them on just be in the game at 9pm EST, and if you want get the Mumble application so you can voice chat with guild members (it is lots of fun) if you don't have a mic or don't want to talk you can just listen to the instructions. Mumble is not necessary, who ever is running them will type in guild chat with all the information.
The 100g you can amass by playing regularity, but the 1000g, I don't even know how he did that. I will just always accuse him of buying gems and converting them to gold, to make myself feel better.It's a shame I won't be able to join this Saturday.

If you are in US that's tge same time zone as in New York/DC/Florida...and so on.

Actually, there is sort of a decent glory => gold conversion. Buying 10 giant wintersday gifts for 200glory, will net you around 15silver.
I made 100gold with just a bit over 120glory that way.
But will not go all-in on this, tho. Who know, they may think of it as an exploit and ban us all.

If you are just interested in the Guild Missions, we also redo them for people who cannot make it on Saturday, the next day on Sunday at around 3pm EST again, I guess if you are +6 Hours ahead, then it would be 9pm for you. I doubt Levyne will be giving out any money that day though.
That sounds a lot better than the toxic lockboxes...

The winner will be free to donate to that if he likes. I want this to feel like a jackpot to someone, not like a charity.
1000 gold might not be as much as it once was but I hope it makes someone happy.

I don't like this. I was always hoping you would get back at some point. This is give away pretty much means you will probably never come back. I doubt even for an expansion.

I'm actually going to be out of town this weekend- but that's just as well as I wouldn't want to be in the running. Hopefully the other officers will be around so we can ensure this goes off without a hitch.
Yes. Dungeons are incredibly good xp, and the first dungeon, Ascalonian Catacombs story mode, is very easy and a great intro to dungeons in general. It can be run many many times for XP, but you get a 50s reward for doing it once a day.
Other dungeons have recommended levels as well, with AC Explorables starting at 35, but these are substantially harder. It's not your level that makes the most impact though- it's your skill and confidence with your class, as well as coordinating with your group.
One note: dungeons punish you harshly for not having gear within ~5 levels of your own level. So if you're doing a level 30 dungeon at level 60 with level 40 armor, you'll be hit harder than doing it at level 30 with level 30 armor. Rarity isn't as important- just a set of blues or greens which you can easily buy on the TP at any time.
This is actually an atypically great time to come back.
Right now is the first time in over 6 months that the pace of content releases has slowed down from occurring every two weeks for a bit of a "holiday break." There's a ton of fun, self-explanatory content in the game right now for Wintersday, as well as Living Story content which would be a great jumping off point for learning what you missed over the last year if you're interested. You could explore both at your leisure over the next 6 weeks. There are also some silly-good new moneymaking opportunities right now in selling crafting materials for the armor professions.
Come Jan. 21st, the updates return and big things are going to be afoot for two months ramping up to a "season finale."

Not much of the Wintersday stuff is group/party content actually, but it should be pretty easy to find groups for Toypocalypse.

"That section" hehe. They're quite literally all over the world, and we never know which ones we're going to get when we run them- it's random. Basically, if they happen to be in zones you can get to then you can come along, but some are in higher-level zones and much more dangerous.
Seems to me that it doesn't really mean that at all- having a stock of gold isn't required to just log on and play in any mode of the game for as long as you like, especially with an account as developed as his- but even if it did, it's totally his prerogative to do what will give him the most satisfaction and enjoyment. As a jackpot I bet it will make someone in the guild very very happy, and regardless of what he decides just wish him well!

1000 gold is more than I'll ever see in the game, by a large amount. I was happy when I got over 100...
I popped into Snowball Fights a couple hours ago.
They're still fun, but they didn't do the one thing I expect from a teamed game mode with a mini map: put allied players on the mini map. The only action the mini map ever gets is for downed players, meaning it's ignored. It's also much harder to see how many allies are nearby, how many are dead, and how many are reinforcing you (or dicking around somewhere else so you probably shouldn't wait for backup).
They also updated the way the game gives out rewards. Assuming you sell all your Wintersday gifts on the trading post, you actually make less from the activity than you do if you play PvP hotjoins and spend a little glory here and there for presents to sell on the trading post. I was afraid they were going to make the activity worth more.

Then you're fine. We always wait for people to get there and escort if necessary.
I haven't had any issues myself but I've heard multiple people complain about crashes with this patch. If it occurs in a reproducible spot, please make sure to /bug report it.

Why is that?
Scaling. The game scales you to a specific level of the content involved - and as such, your gear get scaled as well, to make sure your gear doesn't make you just super pwn the content. Meaning what Hawkian said. So always make sure gear is near your level and you should be fine.

I think it's jus a by product of having your level down-scaled for the level of the content.
One of GW2's strongest features is level scaling, which keeps content relevant relative to you no matter where it is. As a quick example, I leveled from level 70-72 in about an hour in a level 1-15 zone on my first character.
When it comes to dungeons, you're downscaled to the dungeon's level- so if you're level 30 you're level 30 with no scaling, but if you're level 31, 50, or 80 you're downleveled to 30. This scaling impacts your experience in dungeons in two major ways:
1) the statistical advantage of your higher level is negated, so a tough dungeon is a tough dungeon- you can't come back and faceroll it by leveling up (though you'll still be way better off, of course, due to traits, skill and weapon variety, and personal improvement)
2) you'll always get loot scaled to your actually level, i.e. level 80 loot in a level 40 dungeon
Obviously these factors go hand in hand- if the raw statistical advantage of your level/higher-level gear applied when in a lower level dungeon, you could simply obliterate everything in your path while collecting at level loot- on the other hand, if you only got the loot at the dungeon level, it wouldn't be worth the effort no matter how easy it was. So you get the best of both worlds- with the resulting compromise that if you don't have gear near your actual level, the dungeon will treat you as though you were geared below your scaled level.
Long story short, this all means that the first dungeon players get access to is quite literally one of the most frequently run by max-level players in the game.
I was talking with a friend on Gandara today about the last year's worth of additions to the game and realised that I want some more dungeon revamps along the lines of the Ascalonian catacombs sexing-up. Hopefully when the current living story season ends Anet have an opportunity to slip one in.
Unfortunately you won't get another one similar to AC because they let the designer of that revamp go recently. RIP Robert.

Yeah, I remember when this was a major issue in GW1. They made a reconnect option to work around it, not sure why they can't make something similar for situations like this.

It's still bugged atm; basically only shows up if you have it in your inventory.
It took me I think ~1500 boxes before I found one.
So earlier today I was dodging random heartseeker spam with death blossom. My Thief bunker build seems to be working well. On the other hand, I've found the reason why I have so much trouble with my Guardian Supreme Justice build is because Guardian cast times are longer than I'm used to on any other class way too easy to accidentally cancel. I try to use a utility, dodge, heal, use a virtue dodge. I see immediately afterward that nothing on my skill bar went off but the virtue. Stuff that feels like a 1/4 second cast time might have a 1/2 cast time and then it gets cancelled because I press a button for a different skill too soon. So frustrating...
