Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

That specific guild in the video is a press guild. It wasn't created by the player rather it was an ANet employee that had to manually add the people in the press beta. Just so you know.

Well, I was referring to the guy creating the new guild straight from the "Manage Guild" interface without having to visit a vendor or something first.

By the way, when does your article go live? Rpgsite.net, right?

It goes up when my editor is finished editing. It's should be up soon if not a bit later today. Don't expect something too grand. It's a lot more basic than you think, however, unlike a lot of non-big journalism sites, I tend to have a better grasp of the game despite me going into media blackout.

Meh, an article by someone in the beta is better than no article at all, I'm sure yours will be an excellent read. And in terms of journalists having a poor grasp of things.. if you have any grasp at all you're probably leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else.

You're also on GAF so we can pick your brain more.

From what I'm seeing, and I understand why, is we're getting details about the game rather than analyzing how it works and why it works. I explain mechanics I encountered in the game and how they work, if they're good, why it's good, what it means for the game. Really formal press like IGN, Gamespot, and Kotaku are going to have less detailed and more broad stuff essentially generalizing. I understand why. On the other hand, "low prestige" sites just won't have the MMO knowledge and Guild Wars knowledge to really substantiate their experience or formulate a "good" opinion. That's how I see it. However, I'm not saying I'm the exception, there are others too.

I'm not reporting it. However, once people find out they'll mostly likely be dealt with. I'm surprised. Anyway, I'll be abiding by all the press related NDA so... yeah. Rofl.

Hahaha that was fast anyway, was going to erase it but then i saw they put it in private :D

This video is private.
Sorry about that.

Maybe it slipped in the upload.

edit: Oh well, the website killed the article and all the videos, even the one that don't break the NDA, it had awesome ingame music tho :(.

I'm sorry to say this, but I think someone is going to have to run the podcast without me - my illness has progressed into dangerous territory - I woke up last night with my tonsil and my left inside of my mouth swollen. It's hard to speak and breathe, let alone even drink or eat.

I'm scheduled for a doctor's appointment at 11:15 AM, which is the earliest they can see me on such short notice for a "free" clinic. I don't have insurance, and everyone else around me is avoiding the emergency room, as me and my family are too poor to pay the doctor's bill there.

This is the worst feeling in the world. It feels like the back of my throat is closing in on itself, and my left ear no doubt being pushed on by the inflammation, is muffled beyond belief.

I leave it to you, Retro or Arken, to host the ustream and do the podcast, or rather wait until later today to see if I am better after antibiotics (which I am sure to get prescribed). I am most certainly not going to work today either as I am way too unfit for even talking to anyone until I get this under control.

Once again, I apologize.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I thought you were getting better? Damn man, so sorry to hear. Hope the Dr. visit goes well. Get better soon man!!!

I feel that half of my enjoyment in playing this game will be due to the music.

Yeah, Jeremy Soule's work in the past has been amazing and from the bits we've heard GW2 may be his finest yet. I dunno if I know how to handle an MMO with music I don't shut off after an hour.

I think the longest I listened to an MMO score was Vanguard.

In that TB video you can really see the hangups on things when using dodge. Hope they fix that. I don't think I have seen him use it once and actually move much at all. Not too worried though. Besides that Thief is really starting to overtake Elementalist as my first character. Just looks lik so much fun.

Kill Ten Rats has a nice little article up about the weekend, crafting and personal story write-ups are later this week:

I was in the Queensdale overflow area for a little bit. I was in the middle of stopping some centaurs from stealing wine with two other players when I was asked if I wanted to get to “real” Queensdale. I was having so much fun I said no. (It puts you back in the queue, and I was asked again in a couple minutes.) I don’t think I noticed a difference between the overflow Queensdale and the “real” one that much. It was really nice to not even really notice that I was queued.

Mmm.... so nice. I can remember getting home from work and queuing up World of Warcraft so I'd be on by the time I finished changing/eating. Rift too, I'd get up early, log in, then run a few errands and be back in time to keep waiting.

The thing I am taking away from these write ups the most is that people are having fun. I'm seeing it said in some way or another in every article or video, it was in the TB video quite a bit and that killtenrats quote he says it in a kind of side note. Everyone will have their hangups and issues, but overall it seems like people are finding it fun. This to me is huge. I can't remember the last time I had fun playing WoW.*

*Not knocking on wow at all I have had tons of fun over the years, I just mean it as I haven't had fun in a while and it is nice to look forward to again.

Isn't his latest video of the previous build though? I've heard that the closed beta for both the press and other people weren't similiar. The press had a newer build and TB still has footage of 1 month(or so) ago.

From his commentary it really seems like he is the one playing. You could be right, he could just have a better grasp of the game after playing it. But it really seems lik he is the on playing. The other videos didn't have as much movement or switching weapons or dodging as this video. Not sure, would be nice to find out though.

Edit:Yeah he says it's a live commentary. So he is playing while he's actually talking.

That's awesome but I hope they add better stuff to these than a strawberry garden... like a super hard enemy or something.

Depends on how rare strawberries are and how valuable they are to the cooking profession. If Strawberry Pie is an amazing consumable, knowing where to get the key ingredient is going to come in handy.

I think we're facing some kind of delay due to Maxrpg not being around. Still trying to work out how we'll handle this.

We're also missing a few people...

Yeah. With Max being ill, if we don't have enough people show, we may just have to put it off until later in the week.

Also Retro, GoT season 1 was fantastic!

Yep. I read the books beforehand so I knew all of this was coming and I was still blown away by how good it was. Really looking forward to season 2, it basically takes everything you like about Season 1 and adds more of it.

It's not really spoiling anything that wasn't mentioned in S1, but Tyrion in the middle of all the politics (instead of out in the world where he's just a dwarf, though certainly a clever, rich dwarf) is going to be a definite highlight. He's in his element, without a doubt. It's definitely gonna make the wait for GW2 easier with Game of Thrones to look forward to every weekend.

I haven't read the books, so I'm going in with a clean slate, so it's a bit fun that way, but I realize the main thread has book spoilers, so I feel a bit left out :p

Tyrion is definitely a great character, someone you hate sometimes, and care about the other half, so it's definitely a strong point in character building when you have that dynamic.

As is the case with any marathon viewing, it'll be a bit annoying to go back to just seeing one episode a week :p But I guess half the fun is the discussion throughout the week. Like you said, it is something neat to look forward too each and every week.

Anyone able to tell me if you can scale the UI down?
Because as gorgeous as it is, I feel the skills bar is quite huge, i'd love to shrink it to about 50%.

Charrzooka is making a very strong case for a race that I had placed firmly at the lower end of my list. Bringing one of those bad boys out on a Charr Engineer is going to give the impression of a hunching armory loaded to the teeth with firearms. I was thinking Asura engineer, we'll have to see what their racials are.

There actually aren't a lot of characters in the series you can actually put into one category or the other, because as the series goes along you get to see how they came to be the way they are. The 'good guys' make mistakes, the 'bad guys' didn't start off that way. There's no character in the series that is deserves the hate... okay, there's one.

Yes, there's not much UI customization (but really, so far I'm impressed with how well everything is set up), but you can definitely scale it.

Heh, the minute I saw that scene I remembered how often I've seen that gif, and what a great scene it was. The little son of a bitch!

edit: on the topic of GW2, RockPaperShotgun have their opinions posted of this latest beta weekend.

So any confirmation if there's going to be another beta event before pre-purchasing starts ?

I think on their twitter or on the beta forums someone said this was the last one until the pre-purchase beta. It was talked about in this thread a page or two back I think. I will keep hope that there is another one though!

This article brings up a point I brought up before, that the dynamic events seem to rely on a steady flow of people. I'm a little worried about this, but at the same time I can't see ANet not thinking of this potential problem. It kind of interests me to find out what they do to get people to go back to these areas. Maybe daily and weekly achievements? Not sure, I hope they do it in an interesting way.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to going to empty areas of the game to see what happens when events were going on but there were no players to defend areas, so I can see what it's like when events fail. When you're in an area with other people doing events it's not very likely you'll see many that people failed to complete them in time, or failed to defend them. The requirements for completing random, normal events are generally pretty easy from what I've seen. Almost so much that you would have to actually try to fail it on purpose in order for the event to fail.

They have daily/monthly quests/achievements for you to do which gives you the incentive to come back.

Mesmer is, in all likelihood, going to undergo a few more passes before release.

It seems like the least fleshed out profession so far.

I was lucky enough to play it & yeah, this game EASILY lives up to the hype... it's amazingly polished & from what I've managed to play it's everything I've wanted in an MMO.

The only small issue I have is the way ranger pets function... they don't always attack your target when you tell them too but I'm hoping that'll be fixed. Other than that, yeah. I just wish I could play Sylvari too.

This also makes me wonder what if events fail at different points? Say there is a group of people invading a city and you defend the city. Say that chain leads to you fighting some boss in their home territory. Will the failing the event result in different outcomes? Then not only would we have a different outcome if it's failed or if its won, but what if it's failed at a different point and that leads to a different event. Does the system go that deep? Man, I hope.

This is what I figured, but I'm hoping they have something else to also get you back in the areas for other reasons. Just don't know how they could do it really. I just think some people simply won't care about achievements, so I hope they thought past that also.

Them and Necro both seem behind compared to the other professions. I think in large part this has to do with AI.

Nice to hear!

I noticed the pet thing in the Yogscast video covering epic skills. As I said above it's the reason I think Mesmer and Necro seem behind compared to the other professions. With Ranger it seems like they have enough other stuff going on to where it doesn't seem as impactful.

I hope so too. I really wish ANet or someone would do a nice walkthrough showing events failing at certain points to see what happens, but we probably won't find out how deep it goes until release and we get our hands on it ourselves.

Beating skill point challenges gets you into other areas too. You'll actually need the skill points, though I'm not sure if there is a cap on them or not.
