Oh the pups are active? Looks like that black cable needs to be connected to the ground otherwise there's no power loop. Easy fix if you have a solder iron handy.

I had thought the 9volt was just for the piezo, but now I'm thinking that yeah, all the pickups are active.

EDIT: And you're already talking outside of my area of expertise. Never soldered anything in my life.

Check this pic, locate your 'ground', touch the black cable to it and strum the strings to see if you've got the right spot:

I think you could just hook the black cable to any metal object and see if noise starts coming out.

Yeah, that did it. Thanks for the help. I'll get it soldered this weekend when I have it back home and am around people who won't fuck it up like myself. Fuck guitar center.

Here's my Strat:

It was originally black/white, but I changed the pickguard to tortoise. Loving this color combination.

My father picked this guitar for me about 6 years ago. He had tested it and really liked how it sounded and played so he chose this one. This thing is my most valued item.

Not sure if anyone here knows, but didn't we have a thread on audio production or something like that? I've been searching but I can't seem to find it.

I need to ask a dumb quesiton: I've got an Ibanez RGMH321 ($400-ish) that doesn't stay in tune as well as I'd like. There's no floating bridge or any of that, so my question is: I assumed that the tuners are just cheap and I need to got with locking tuners. But looking a little online, there's a lot of 'If you're going out of tune, there's a strong chance it's the nut', which, quite frankly, I find almost impossible to blieve. Okay, I DO find it impossible to believe.

Anyone?

They're probably right about the nut, and you're probably wrong about the tuners. Also, you might be stringing it wrong. If you don't do it like this, try it. There are a few good ways and many bad ways.

Yeah, especially this step should be known by everyone
"Sometimes your string gets stuck in the nut slot , especially when tuning down. You can solve this by putting a bit of flake graphite in the nut slot (under the strings) to remove friction so the string can slide more freely. You can easily get flake graphite by scratching the lead of a pencil with a knife."

If you have problems with your nut it's usually the g string that is most ouf of tune, and you can actually hear the little "ping" sound it makes in the nut when you tune the sting up or down.

Picked this up today. Loving it so far.

My guitarist has a rebel 30. The gain channel is boring as fuck, but the clean channel pushed into distortion with the treble boosted all to fuck sounds AMAZING.

yeah, I like the Rats quite a bit.

rats are amazing on bass. I got a turbo rat a few months back. I loved it so much that I sold it to buy a modified version of it that has a second gain setting, a feedback loop, individual clipping knobs for bass/trebble, diode selects, etc. three months till its done though :(, the guy has a tonne of customers ahead of me.

This is my current rig

Also: is it just me or are there a disproportionately high number of "shredder" guitars in this thread? I can't stand them.

While I too am fearful of my eyes in their presence, everyone has their own tastes and many non-pointy guitars are lacking features that are desired for pointy-guitar-music.

Bought my first electric guitar last month: Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Love it.

Gorgeous! I can't get enough of my Les Pauls.

I've been very tempted recently by the Epi Les Paul Standards.

I can't really tell what colour that is in the photo, but i want the plustop cherry sunburst.

Just a shame it's £350 :(

Mine's a honeyburst and it cost exactly £350. I was first thinking about buying a cheaper Yamaha or ESP-LTD M-50 but in the end Epiphone won me over...

Another pic of my Jaguar, for those who are interested:

I put on some flatwound 11-50s as an experiment and absolutely love them.

It's hard to get a accurate picture of the color. It changes depending on light. It's called Metallic KO, and is specific to this particular model. It attempts to mimic the faded Candy Apple Red of Johnny Marr's '66 Jag. I'm thinking about trying a Mint Green pickguard for a more vintage look. Also considering procuring a Jaguar Mute, although I'm wary that it will raise the action. The mutes are also apparently ridiculously finicky to set up.

I recently donated my MIM Tele to the Silver Lake Music Conservatory, Flea's music school. It went to an underprivileged scholarship student, which made me way happier than scoring $200 on craigslist would've.

^Nice looking guitar, dig the color.

I've got a bit of a question, wasn't sure where else to ask. I found an epiphone Casino at an estate sale, although it is damaged. Not sure why, etc.

I'm mainly wondering if it is worth keeping to repair, and play? Or is it totaled?

Awesome colour Sobriquet, Metallic KO eh? Love it.

The_Reckoning, that looks brutal. I can't imagine it'd be worth the cost of repairing, how does it sound as is?

Yeah, that's what I figured. Eyes lit up when I first saw it, knew it was too good to be true. Turned it over and saw the hole.

Can't figure out what they were doing there. Looks intentional. Hurts my heart. The sound is good, nothing noticeably wrong, although I'm far from an expert. Thinking of taking it down to a local guitar shop and getting some ideas, as well.

I was in the market for a hollow body, and the guitar feels really good to me. Good action, feel anything similar to a Casino for a bit cheaper?

Thanks, guys!

I can only assume it's named after Iggy's live album. It's also easier than saying metallic c(k?)andy orange. :p

There's a pretty cool (long) interview with Johnny Marr about the modifications and enhancements for his signature Jag. Apparently it took around five years of road-testing to develop it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPoUB9qBdg4&feature=related

I got one of the first 300, so his autograph is on the booklet in the included case candy. I was not expecting that. :)

I dig Johnny Marr, but my playing isn't really influenced by him. I love the Smiths and Modest Mouse, but I prefer the latter's work before Johnny joined. I never would've imagined buying a guitar with his signature on it. But he pretty much fixed all of my misgivings with a Jaguar, which I've been wanting for years. The video really sold me on it. I got really lucky finding one. Fender's really slow to send out Fender AVRI offsets, and pretty much every order is pre-sold. As soon as dealers get some stock, they're sent out.

Apologies if I'm rambling. I just love it. :)

And Reckoning, I would not buy that. I don't think it would be worth fixing.

edit: Just saw your last post.

Epipone Dot? I think they still make Dot Studios, which are less than $300. They're semi-hollow like a 335.

^kickass about the Marr autograph. And kudos for your advice, and recommendation. I already picked up the Casino, was 50$ and I was blinded by impulse. Sexy guitar to have on the wall I suppose, and to let friends pick on. Really doesn't sound as bad as one would expect. Not too bummed on it all

Oh, $50! That doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. In that case, just tape it up and enjoy it. Casinos are sweet!

Get some pick guard material and make a backplate.

I'd take a hobby knife and score the paint near the finish, then trim away the debris, but that's optional.

That's a really great idea. Then you can actually have access to the wiring, which is a huge pain in the ass on hollows and semi-hollows.

For fans of Fender offsets that don't have the budget for one, Squier is releasing versions very soon. They actually look like the AVRI versions, but have a modern radius and frets, basswood bodies, different pickups (obviously), and non-locking tremolos.

No Jag up yet, but it's coming (olympic white, candy apple red, surf green, three tone sunburst):

edit: I forgot the price! It's expected to be between $300 and $350 for all three.

Ahhh nice. Very tempting. I bought a Fender Strat American Special a couple of years back so I have to chill for a while. But man, I would love a Jazzmaster, even if it's a Squier.

Picked up a couple of new guitars today...

45EastMira.jpg

I actually went in for the PRS Mira, but saw the Eastman T184MX hanging from the wall and couldn't resist... either of them...

They're sweet guitars. The Mira's a 2008 NOS - never played! Lost in a back room somewhere, apparently... This is my second Mira, and it's replacing my sorely worn original in Surf Green which I kind of beat on for a while. These are really great knock-around gig guitars, though...

The Eastman is a 2011 and it's just gorgeous. Hand made, literally - there are no CNC machines in thier factory... Five ply maple/ebony binding around the body, three-ply around the neck... hand carved solid top and back (not pressed, not laminate, like Gibson 335s)... and it's stock pickups are Duncan '59s - one of my favorite pickups of all time! "Used" but you'd never know it; there's not a spot of wear on it anywhere.

Both weigh in at just an ounce or two over 6 lbs, and both sound fantastic (in their own way, of course)

I need to take a photo next time I'm in the practice room! I bought a new edal, the EH Memory Boy! Now that's a toy I'm going to play with for a while. : )

I had a Memory Boy for a while - it was a fun pedal but I didn't have much use for it live so it fell off the board and eventually got traded off... I use a Line 6 M9 or M5 for most all my delay and swirly swirly needs now...

have any of you tried the Seymour Duncan Blackout humbuckers? I've been wanting to replace the stock ones on my Epi LP Standard and those seem kinda interesting.

The Jaguar. The most important thing I own. Bridge pickup is an SJAG-3, the bridge has been replaced with a Mustang bridge. You can't really see it but the guitar has taken a fair amount of damage over the years.

I'm about to buy my first guitar. It'll be a western I think, if the seller is home tonight.

Where is a great place with songs? And another with great video tutorials, also for basics? YouTube?

I am just absolutely befuddled by the number of people that now own Jaguars. When I bought mine I'd literally only ever seen one other one in person. It's great though, as I think it's a fantastic guitar.

The first time I saw a Squier Jaguar, the confusion was profound.
