GUN Review - Gamespot

The Good: Great presentation features exciting cutscenes and terrific voice acting; intense, gory shooting action; fun horseback riding.
The Bad: Short storyline isn't made up for by shallow side missions; some noticeably undercooked elements of play; some of the violence and profanity feels too gratuitous.

Despite a great presentation that'll likely give a very positive first impression, Gun ultimately offers too little content for it to be a truly satisfying game. Most all of the right ingredients are here in some quantity. But the hastily delivered storyline (which, fittingly, concludes with an incredibly abrupt ending) and the lack of any real depth to the gameworld make Gun much better suited for some quick, fleeting thrills instead of for the long haul.

Guess Oddworld: Stranger will remain as the best western themed game. It's sad how Atari, Rockstar, Capcom and now Acitivision have all failed.

sorry for teh hatred

this seems to be a problem for a lot of games that try to copy the GTA gameplay style... they usually forget that one of the main draws of GTA is the length, the massive environments and the huge amount of side content. you can easily spend well over 100 hours with san andreas for example and still not see and do everything.

i'm a little bit bummed out. i was hoping this would be great.

What the hell, story mode only lasts about six hours? =\
Heh, you're funny.

Holy crap, the monkey was right! Xbox rental get
Furthermore, the free-roaming format of Gun means that you can trot into town and start trouble if you so choose, such as by wantonly killing random townspeople. This causes a "town patience" meter to dwindle, and if you empty it, a "showdown" scenario begins as a posse rolls in to get rid of you. Only, this posse tends to be laughably weak, and should you defeat all its members, the town just goes back to normal, as if you never even hurt a fly.
WTF

Dammit... I was so hyped for this game :(

Now I just don't know. 7.4 isn't bad... but there's the 360 to think about!

Wow, a bit disappointing, I was expecting more length from this game. Reminds me of Ultimate Spiderman, another Activision published game (admittedly made by a different developer, Treyarch), which had an extremely short story mode. I'll probably look to pick this up in the 20-30 dollar range, too much other good stuff to pick up right now....

It isn't like they're gonna be addind any more content. I'm waiting for the 360 verison as well, but the most you can expect is longer draw distance, perhaps slightly higher res textures and improved lighting. Other than that...

This was a game I was considering buying for my wife's brother for Christmas, but damn.. 6 hours in length. He'll finish that in one sitting. All he does is play games (usually), so yeah.. that would be no problem for him in a day. Not enough replay value (most likely) to keep him satisfied.

After reading the review it seems like the game has great gameplay mechanics and great promise, but it's just too short. GUN2 will probably be alot better if they have longer to add more missions.

Greg gets a little jack-thompson'y' during the review though, but takign what kasavin said in conjuction with many gta-knock offs, the score seems to make sense.

Red Dead Revolver got 7.3, and I enjoyed that one a lot. There's hope! :P
Exactly.

It also doesn't help that the reviewer spends time pointing out things like:
-It's too violent.
-It's too vulger.
-You can't bond with your horse.

:lol

bond with your horse? I suppose actually caring what happens to it would heighten the kind of trade off between health and speed they're going for

now this may not really apply to this review, I don't think he did it in this case, but I don't understand some of these point deductions lately, I should start reviewing games just so I can deduct points from every game that doesn't let you kick elves around a campfire

Noooooooo! Looks like the $50 that was earmarked for this game tomorrow is going to Half Life 2 Xbox next week.

Although....

Good point. RDR was much better than a 7.3 game to me.

Hmmm I saw the Game Makers special on G4 about this game and it had 7.4 written all over it. It looked like it had a few control problems, graphics were so-so, and the horseback looked weird, at least IMO. However, the presentation looked top-notch between the story, voice acting, and cinematics.

Oh well.

I've been hearing good buzz about the game based on the upcoming movie "Brokeback Mountain."

I guess I'll get my western fix from that.

Sucks about GUN - but looking at the posts above I realized we had alot of damn good cowboy games! Are they making a RDR sequel?

:lol at bandwith thief message - wheres the sheriff?!?

Is it too early to start getting excited for Gun 2 instead?

I get a feeling alot of these first wave 360 games are going to be short, short, short on gameplay. Too bad they had to be rushed. Would have liked to see Gun with 5-6 more months of development.

Where the hell is my Wild West MMORPG?! I mean seriously. If any era what be awesome for 'clans' and town raids .. that would be it.

GUN wasn't rushed. Its primary development platforms were current-gen systems and its being released as Activisions major focus ("biggest game of the year") for the holidays.

This game was supposed to have so much promise, it was supposed to be revive the Western genre, it was supposed to be the biggest game of 2005, what happened?

Reading all these reviews makes me wonder if Neversoft just didn't have the time to implement all they wanted to do in this game and make the holiday release. It's so typical of developers having to cut corners to satisfy the rigid deadlines set by the publishers. I blame Activision for not giving Neversoft the time to truly develop this game to its full potential.

It also shows how easy to throw the word "GTA" around to pump your newest game, but how hard it is to make a true massive sandbox game.

-Read Dead Revolver already revived the Western genre.
-There's no way in hell Gun was going to be the biggest game of '05. ;)

Why the fuck is this game 60 bucks for the Xbox 360? No way in hell does it deserve this price tag.
...because the other 3rd party games are as well? It's not like you have to get it for 360 or even right away. Wait for price drop.

What a load of shit. The game doesn't even sport next gen graphics, yet they charge 60 bucks for it. That's just insane.

I am not even looking to get this game, and I won't have an Xbox 360 on launch. I just think it's bullshit is all.
