Kind of fucked up that two blue collar work-a-day schlubs got shot. Probably from someone very pissed off at the current economic issues and political problems of Italy and it's part in global economics.

Better hope that's not the work of a bunch of desperate citizens. Because if that's the case, you don't want to see what could ever happen in Greece and Spain (or the measures that will be enacted by their governments out of panic). Some people may get ideas...

The fucker was caught at the spot.

And he's alive. Good.

Edit: They are already claiming that he had mental issues. Yeah, I'd wait on that just in case...

To think that ministers went to the government building on foot a little earlier, it could have been a much bigger tragedy.

Let's hope this doesn't mark the beginning of a new era of violence like the Years of Lead (gli Anni di Piombo), a period of political fighting and terrorism that lasted more than 10 years during the seventies and eighties.

I wonder if it's possible for countries like Italy, Greece etc to have a civil war. America sure as shit could, dunno bout the rest of the "modern" world.

Gladio had paramilitary sleeper cells hiding throught Italy, there to "fight communists" or whatever else they felt like doing with all those guns and explosives. That's not a civil war, but it's certainly inter-factional conflict.

What for? Berlusconi is not even there anymore.

That doesn't mean their current government is not made of scumbuckets. Italy has gone through a fairly concerning political crisis during the last weeks, not to mention the sacrifices that are being made among the population.

I find it extremely unlikely. Big fights, internal terrorism and local clashes with security forces, even with several victims, could happen, but not to the extent of a nationwide civil war.
At the very worst we're still very far from it.

Weapons wise though. What sort of arms does the civilian population have access to.

Precisely, apart from hunting rifles and some guns, weapons are not wisespread at all in Italy.

Jumping to conclusions much? It's just a psychopath, as far as we know. He shouted he wanted to be shot at when they stopped him.

As much as I dislike M5S, it's definitely wrong to justify this as "this is what you get when you criticize politics every day" (Rome's major just said this... what a POS). It's also wrong to justify the act saying "people can't take it anymore" though, he shot policemen anyway so how is that related to politics?

FYI, public shootings are very rare in Italy.

Lots of hunting rifles and shotguns. But more often than not civil wars begin with a military revolt.

For the record, Southern Europe is far from being there, but it amazes me that nobody (until today) had made an attempt on a politician.

He could very well be and I'm certainly not making any bets, but labeling a mentally unstable person this fast doesn't seem very prudent either.

I hope they can save the critically wounded guard. It's a shame to lose people due to someone's sense of self-entitlement.

Or he could be desperate. A case of somebody wanting to go down, but not before taking as many people with him as he could. It's not the same as being a nut job.

Being desperate enough to go into a self harming rampage still falls under the ''not sane'' category. It wasn't something he did with a precise agenda, rather than what most likely would be the culmination of his mental uneasiness.
Remember the episode of the church replica thrown at Berlusconi? Same kind of thing.

What, again? No thanks.

1936–1939 Spanish Civil War
1945–1949 Greek Civil War
And the Years of Lead in Italy.

"America" didn't invent civil wars :P

Nah this is just a what if, I don't think it will ever get to the point. I just mean if civilians decided to take up arms against the Government. Just with a portion of the American civilian population being pretty heavily armed already it would be a bit easier for them.

Ideally, 3 million vs 300 million, fudging the numbers a bit I know, would be a fair fight. But not really, when you account for trillions of dollars in military hardware.

a fortunate start for the new government

sad for those injured/killed. Clearly a man with mental issues. RIP

So now the authorities have changed their tune and the perp is no longer a madman, but a divorcee who lost his job and wanted to vent his frustration by gunning down some politicians. A man who had little to lose and went over the edge.

I'm just glad no one died.
