Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman

What's being alluded to in panels 3&4 ("Give a big welcome..." and "All the things that girl...") of the "Origin Story" image? Instead of going pro wrestler she goes pop star?

But then she's a drummer in MJ's band? Which seems weird: doesn't seem like you could be a one-man show as a drummer, but she also couldn't mix Spider-Woman and her secret identity by having the band with her... Am I missing something?
If you're a costumed drummer who plays upside down, you're probably interesting enough for people to feature you on late night shows.

And it seems like she wasn't with MJ's band at the time.

Wish I could buy every cover version ~_~" looks awesome. But no idea where I could buy the comics in Germany. Don't want digital >.<

Thought the suit looked badass the instant I saw it in a thread here months ago.

But then again, in comes naturally - the most badass super hero costumes out there are worn by Spider-people.

Ahhh I see. She undoubtedly will make it over, she'll have a role in Secret Wars as well as being part of A-Force.

I didn't know that there's an Iron Woman now.

That's actually brought up by Spider-Man India during the Spider-Verse event.

She's in college, not high school. Her band still practices in their old high school though.

But this article states:

She's Gwen Stacy. She's smart, tough, and charming. She drums in a punk rock band and goes to high school just like you. Only she can lift a car and has spider powers! Just don't tell her father, NYPD Police Chief George Stacy! But you knew all that already! What you don't know is Gwen is back home following the events of Spider-Verse and you won't believe what she's got waiting for her!

Really cool costume, nice to see some more interesting colours being used.

Thanks!

Man, her costume is awesome.

I'd like to read this. I need to get into some kind of digital comics subscription.
First time looking at online comics - http://marvel.com/comics/issue/52521/spider-gwen_2015_1, I guess it's not day and date?

Wow, at first glance Marvel Unlimited seems like good value.

Marvel Unlimited is amazing value. You just have to turn your marvel comics life to be behind others by 6 months. If you can do that you save so much money for $69 a year, it's crazy. It works for me since I don't really read comic news that much and get caught up in hype cycle. Plus the backlog of stuff to read is massive anyways.

But yeah, use Comixology if you want to read day and date.

It is day and date. Comixology.com is where you want to buy digital comics.

Ah, thank you!
Marvel Unlimited is great if you want to read older issues.

Yeah, I see the 6 month rule now.
Still, for me, that could be great, like you said hamchan.

If I'd use it. I barely read the books I buy. :(

Also worth pointing out the band "Married with Sea Monsters" made a song out of MaryJane's "Face It Tiger" from Spider-Gwen

Also if you're in the NC area on the 28th, there is a launch party for Spider-Gwen. Signing by both Latour and Rodriguez, and an after party featuring Married With Sea Monsters. At said party they'll also be selling this amazing vinyl (Art by Rodriguez)

Really thinking about taking the trip up there TBH just for the vinyl.
I would pay someone to pick that up and send it to me.

At the very least, get a month and try reading some cosmic Marvel. Unlimited makes it really easy to read entire events (although occasionally they'll be missing an issue from the event section).

The art is really gorgeous; will read. What other relatively new comics are comparable in the art department?

Just read #1. Quick impressions:

Art looks nice. I really like the color of the backgrounds. They make Gwen's white costume stand out. Story is good, but not Ms. Marvel #1 good. Interesting villain setup, and the way Gwen faces it shows she has a bit more spunk when compared to Peter. I was pretty surprised at the inclusion of another Marvel character as a Captain of the NYPD; it's
Frank Castle
. Interested to see how this arc goes.

I really like the art in the current Ms. Marvel series. The first seven issues of it are on Marvel Unlimited.

The 6 month buffer is the worst thing about that damn service.

I would still have it if it let me get current in stuff. Was super interested in reading Aria Shulk, but only 1 issue was out at the time.

I'm in love with Spider-Gwen. haha

While it would be easy to say she's a Spider-man ripoff or at least just an alternate Spider-man not worth having a title, she's different in her own right:

- costume is awesome
- getting the whole Capt. Stacy thing from a much more personal angle this time
- plus, having her actually be hunted by the police instead of the media
- in a band, much cooler character than PP was
- still a science nerd though
- the cell phone - I like the concept and don't think it's just a "lol teenage girl can't let her cell phone go". It makes sense as a way of contacting people, GPS, and she loves music, just another thing giving her more personality.
- knowing her world is the only one that lost Peter Parker wears on her guilt <---- I've always loved Spider-man, but I was never fanboyish about him (that was the X-men), but this got to me as a fanboy and I :( ed. It also solidified me, as a Mary Jane guy, that I really liked Gwen Stacy now.

I also dig Silk, so maybe I'm biased. Say what you will about the state of Spider-man comics, but I think these two creations are really great.

I hauled my ass out in the snow
when I should have been studying
to get this and they were sold out. Curses!

I'll try again next week.

Fuck I better get into town immediately tomorrow morning, but I'm sure they're also sold out in my little burg's two shops. Fuck.

A lot of this stuff is part of the reason that I hope some alternate worlds do end up surviving Secret War and Gwen's is one of them. I like exploring this alternate world. I like how Gwen relates to this alternate world. I like that she is THE Spider-Person in her world.

I feel like we'll be missing out if she gets ferried over to the main universe due to editorial edict. Which is better than arbitrary cancellation due to editorial edict, I'll grant you. Still...

Didn't know Artgerm made a Spider-Gwen piece (looks like his work). Looks dope judging by your avatar.

His Batgirl piece is the only time she's ever looked cool in that new costume let alone interesting enough to read.

He's done two pieces of her, so he must really dig her. The one in my avatar is on his dA page and a second he did for a livestream.

I like his Barb and Steph work. It would be interesting to see his take on Cassandra Cain.

totally agreed

I don't think this contraction of universes that is Secret Wars means there won't be alternate universes in the future. Doing a different take on an existing character is too rich of a mine to abandon forever.

So what is the name of the comics/series I would need to read to be up to date with this multiple Spidermen/women/universes dealio?

Totally forgot the spin-off series was coming out so soon. I need to call my local comic book shop and see if they still have one...

Agreed.

All things said, I really hope they don't rehash Spider-man stories, using the excuse that this is an alternate world so we'll "NEED TO SEE" someone get thrown from a bridge, someone get a symbiote. I would love if every villain be new, not a rehash. Make The Lizard the only Spider-man villain to ever appear in other words.

While I agree that every villain for Spider-Gwen shouldn't be another Doc-Ock, Symbiote, Lizard, Green Goblin, etc. I would still love to see their take on those villains. Like how they portrayed the Lizard was a nice twist on that villain and I would love another take on Green Goblin or a Symbiote that isn't necessarily the same as what has been done before.

But yeah, I agree. Throw some new villains in there we have never seen before with some new archetypes as well. If they throw in a 'new' character that is just a female hunter that is basically a mirror of Kraven I wouldn't be happy.

LOL, you know that is never going to happen. They would have made a new spider character instead of rehashing Gwen if they weren't going to redo storylines

My shop didn't have any variant covers. Bummer. Saved $4 because my gf decided she wanted to be the one to get Spider-Gwen, though. She needs something new now that Hawkeye is ending.

It hasn't been long since I've been aware of this take on things, but very interesting nonetheless (and though it's already been said plenty of times in the thread, the costume design is also nice). It would be nice to see Marvel account for her in the MCU as a means of further distancing from the ASM films, but I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

This could be the series that gets me onto Comixology and back into comic reading.

Is there anything I should be reading for Spider Gwen backstory/origins before this series?

Marvel Unlimited is an amazing value. It's how I got into comics. Since I take it you're new too, there's really no reason to start buying comics day and date instead of going with Unlimited. You can read pretty much every important story in their entirety. Plus, if you ever do feel like picking up issues as they come out, you'll still have a huge backlog of stuff to keep you busy between Wednesdays. I've transitioned to following a few series month to month (mainly Hickman's Avengers) and then waiting for the rest to hit Unlimited. I've got enough to read as it is, so it's not too hard to be six months behind on Daredevil, for instance.

As for other deals on comics, look into your local library system. Seriously, go on its website right now and see what stuff is availaible, you might be surprised. You should be able to get anything from the system delivered to your local library, so just put a request in for a few trades and you should be reading taxpayer-funded comic books in a few days.

Anyway, I digress. Is this a solid first issue? Everyone seems hooked up on the costume, but how is the story? Is it worth $4 or should I just wait until it hits Unlimited?
