Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman

I like the hood and mask combo. Sure, it's fashion over utility, but I think that's a reflection of Gwen's character. She's in university now, and probably became Spider-Woman before finishing high school. When designing the costume, she probably thought simply about looking cool and worked with what she had on hand.

Gwen's thoughts on making the costume (by me):

"Oooookay, now I have spider powers. I can go on TV and make a ton of money! I just need to make an awesome costume and I'm set. Let's see what's in the closet... I guess I can use this hoodie... maybe add some spider-webs to it... Uh, these black leggings I never use? Alright. Oh wait, if my dad finds out I'll be grounded for like, forever. And what would the Mary Janes think of me? They'd call me a freak. Looks like I need a mask!"

Why are so many books (Batgirl, Spider Woman, Silk, Half of DCs June lineup) ripping off Spider-Gwen?

Every cape book wants to have that hip indie-esque style that Gwen has

Excellent comic-book. And a nice reminder that killing Gwen Stacy off in the first place was a really lazy fridge moment for the ages. But that's what you get when you get bored with a character, can't be arsed to develop her beyond her romantic entanglements, and kill her off so your lead can go fuck another character.

And Marvel called themselves progressive...

Killing her off wasn't so bad. But what came afterwards was really stupid.

What the hell is this?

Spider Gwen first debuted in September 2014. Batgirl came later.

The Batgirl revamp was released after, but it was unveiled in June. (edit: correction - July)

And additionally, I doubt Spider-Woman was redesigned to cash in on the 'Spider-Gwen' style and moreso to get away from shit like this in an era when practical modern costume design that doesn't rely on pandering objectification is becoming far more in-demand.

There's an image of Gwen on Tumblr in the exact pose as that "shit like this" image. It was pretty bad. I won't link it, but if you want to see it, just search "Spider-Gwen."

Is it official art? I mean you can't account for fan art on Tumblr/DeviantArt, but I'm not seeing anything overtly sexualized that Marvel themselves are producing and promoting. I mean that Spider-Woman drawing was official art, and that character has a long history for gratuitous ass-shots etc.

It's fan art. Someone on deviant art made it.

Edit-

Oh, and for anyone debating about Spider-Gwen vs Batgirl, let's just get along and say both of them are cool.

Also worth pointing out the band "Married with Sea Monsters" made a song out of MaryJane's "Face It Tiger" from Spider-Gwen

Also if you're in the NC area on the 28th, there is a launch party for Spider-Gwen. Signing by both Latour and Rodriguez, and an after party featuring Married With Sea Monsters. At said party they'll also be selling this amazing vinyl (Art by Rodriguez)

Really thinking about taking the trip up there TBH just for the vinyl.

Fuck fuck fuck.

Why does this have to be the 28th?! :(

I want the Young variant. Will check out my local shop Friday.

Digital. Or if you hate that format you can wait until they collect it in a trade and then buy it.

Yeah digital is no problem and apparently the printed version will be available too. But I really want that one variant that is an ode to McFarlane.

I'm liking that homage variant. Really want the colored version. I've ordered the B/W & colored variants by Hughes, Campbell, and the other by Young a little while ago. I need to get off the variant train.

Take two, and send me one ;-) They look damn awesome!

Do you guys think #1 will be worth something someday? Should I go back to the store tomorrow to pick up more copies?

I honestly doubt it will be worth anything (there was what, 200k pre-orders or something?), but it's $3.99 so picking up another copy won't really break the bank.

Outside of first print stuff for Image books that hit it big and 1:100 variants and stuff, most comics nowadays aren't even worth anything.

I hate to take your money. I meant Marvel got to keep Carol book going and Ms. Marvel is worth her embiggened weight in good PR, Gwen will face the chopping block by christmas

Silk is Asian, she won't get to issue 11. She'll go the way of any Misty Knight led comic.

Bring back Oracle.

They're doing some really campy shit with Batgirl's story to make Oracle a thing and keep hipster Barbara.

Fuck Batgirl.

I love DC characters, but current editorial keeps doing this shit where they try to have their cake and eat it too. It's been especially bad since the New 52.

I feel like their whole thing is, "Every epic moment happened from all your favorite comics, even if that doesn't make any sense and all these hip new things are now true too."

It means these versions of the characters feel like they're chasing their own tails, trying to justify their history and justify their new identities. Between all that justification, they sometimes even manage to tell a story, but unless your name is Scott Snyder, odds are that story isn't very good.

If they want Barbara to be a hipster party girl crime fighter, just retcon her to be that and then commit. You can always retcon her back, whatever. Just commit to your bit and stop making excuses. Comics are fucking weird, we get it. Just tell a damn story already.

Liked Silks first issue better than Gwens. I didn't really get a feel for Gwen as a character unlike Silk. I'll give her the costume though. Although, I do not like the shoes.

The writing just felt bland. And really the first villain she faces in her own series is Vulture?

And for some reason stuff like Officer Grimm and Captain Castle bugged me, but yea it's an alternate universe.

So far she's not a step up from Spider-girl May or Silk.

I'd rather they get more personal with her. Look at the new Batgirl series. Something like that. Get her back in that band. Going to school. Dates etc. While trying to be Spider-Gwen as well. Yea its the first issue they can expand but so far it didn't really grab me. i'll keep on though cause I like the idea.

There were a couple of pages dedicated to The Mary Janes, so I'm sure the band and Gwen's normal life will also be a big focus in the coming issues. I definitely want to see Gwen try to balance normal life with her superhero one.

Also, I updated the OP with a fresh new image by PsychBat! Check it out.
