Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

Had an awesome start today and went 3-0. 4th game, I get major card advantage in round 1 so I pass and lose that round. Second round he plays Ciri as first card, and my head just goes: sweet! now I just pass and have THREE cards up on him and pass.

Oh right... I didn't win first round.

Tilted after that dumb loss I lost a few more, but pulled it back to going 7-5 today. On the edge of rank 14 and made it to top 1000 finally! At 992 worldwide, 680 EU. So good day in the end. Hopefully rank 14 tomorrow.

I apparently get salty whenever I play against Nilfgard now, whether I win or lose. :/ I see Nilf-players as opportunistic cheaters through my salty eyes :D Damn it, I fair better against any other deck than Milfs.

I kinda feel the same, but generally if I have scorch and demetrium shackles I just wait for them to get cocky and major buff a unit or 2 and go for the kill ;D

Hate nilfgaard right now :D

Dimertrium bomb/shackles. These are 2 cards that counter a gold strategy and require you to have follow ups. Shackles locks a card and demotes if gold. So it essentially has no power impact on your or your opponent's board. You're 2-1 against yourself. You need a big follow up for it to be worth it or to hit a unit that gains value over time.

Dimertrium bomb at least resets the minions it demotes, which is of course situational requiring the target to be boosted as opposed to strengthened.

Why are there no silver cards that demote? Or even gold cards. That is probably what the game needs. I could imagine running a card like vanhemar that instead of clear skies it has demote + reset.

I picked nilf cause it was the most fun starter deck. I never played witcher 3 but I heard nilf was OP in it. So people probably already played a lot of nilf even before gwent was standalone.

lmao, I know the feeling, did something exactly like that once.

Can someone please calculate the odds of getting 5 legendaries in 40 packs (considering it's an average of 1 legendary per 40 packs).

The legendary drop rate is ~6% (per keg) on average (pity-timer sits at 40 kegs).
As for the probability it's:
P = ( 40! / ( 35! * 5! ) ) * 0.06^5 * 0.94^35 = ~5.87%

Have 2 Clear Skies + Mage (who can clear skies) in my deck. Not a single one pops up against a monster deck. Do I throw in more Clear Sky cards and pad my deck into things I dont need just to counter this 1 playstyle?

Downright maddening. Dude proceeded to use frost and doubled its effects. I somehow survived the round because NG has insane boosting options. Only, Im met by more frost round 3, and I drew a clear skies which wasnt enough to win.

I REALLY dislike having to counter weather decks because I cant ever tell what kind of weather cards they have. Even if I were to clear frostin round 2, he may as well have had RNR or Drought to really screw me over.

I still think weather needs to be reworked. Im having to carry around a bunch of them and my entire playstyle has to be thrown out to constantly counter and defend against weather stacking.

Why don't you toss in some Nauzica dudes? You have an answer for weather outside of first light/ mages for weather as NG.

Light Longship + Raging (Bear) Berserker + Hunter effected by weather. Hunter was at 15 power and damaged; I used Clan An Craite Warcrier to boost the damaged units to his left. Hunter was then at 23 power when I used Adrenaline Rush to carry him over to round 3.

A 25 power card at the start of round 3. Not bad, not bad at all.

Gotta fine-tune that deck even more.

How does lock interact with the graveyard? I think I've seen the locks still on the dead unit, would it stop something like queensguard?

Queensguard's particular effect is that it's the QG that is played which resurrects other QGs, so it bypasses the lock effect as surely as any other rez card would (Sig, Priestess).

However a card like Morkvarg, which has an ability that works in the graveyard, would stop working under lock.

Forst loss with my new deck against that Henselt-play-the-same-unit and get over 70 power. Bad draws from hell on my side. No Longship, no Dimeritium Bomb, nothing.

How does lock interact with the graveyard? I think I've seen the locks still on the dead unit, would it stop something like queensguard?
Example: You have two Queensguards in your graveyard. One is locked. You play a Queensguard, both get resurrected and the lock will be removed from that one Queensguard.

If you resurrect, the lock disappears.

Holy moly! Another loss because of ******* Tibor. What the hell is anyone supposed to do with that crap if you go into round 3 with two cards left, one of them a 5 power card, the other being Ragh Nar Rog. Dimeritium is somewhere buried deep in the deck because of RNGesus. Play the 5 power card, opponent plays Tibor, bam, 25 power without doing anything but placing the card onto the battlefield!!! Even Dimeritium Bomb wouldn't help if you have to start in round 3.

Might be the best "progress" day of Gwent I've ever had. On top of the 5 golds, I decided to craft (pretty much the best) cards for me, INCLUDING Ragh Nar Roog i premium deliciousness.

^ Tibor is definitely getting nerfed lol.

Or at least it should let opponents Draw 1-2 cards of any rarity.

The ones that destroy spies? What good would they do against weather?

I think they'll need to reintroduce weather immunity in the future. Make a few cards immune, or have some spells that make 3 adjacent cards immune from weather.

They already have those potions, maybe they can add in weather immunity into them, or into that Trumpet silver card that boosts units.

I find it strange that they totally removed weather immunity now that the weather meta is more diverse than ever.

Another match, another Nilfgaard opponent, another Tibor. This time with me having Dimeritium Bomb and winning the match. He's still OP as hell.

Nice, but I personally don't like transmuting Special Cards because you use them once and they are gone. They are seen for maybe 2 seconds. Units on the other hand, they are on the battlefield and can be looked at.

I've seen quite a bit of discussion around tibor and how he is far from necessary to run in nilf and not OP.

Personally I don't have it but I've come up against it and it hasn't been that oppressive.

Nauzica Standard Bearers remove weather from a row and boost an ally or revealed card by 3

-_-

He's strongest in the mill decks where you can ensure that your opponent doesn't draw anything. But yeah, there's a reason many of the top NG decks, such as SuperJJ's "Cycle" deck don't run him. He averages 17-18 stats and has to be played late to not lose CA. If there's a broken NG gold it's Rainfarn. That card into Joachim or Cantarella is insane.

I ran into my first opponent who literally takes every second of every turn. It became apparent when he waited til last second to play a weather card on my only non-frozen lane. Then obvious as he waited til last second to pass both first and second round.

Edit:
Finally over, always some spoiled asshat who thinks it's fun to time out every turn. Beat him. He didn't send me GG so I didn't. Fuck 'em. Guy played like an idiot, played 3 freezes on my board even though I only had 2 non golds on it and then I cleared skies.

Wow you played against Lifecoach!

I don't mind players who take all the time to make their move. But he played that monster minion that summons the freeze spell and then he sat there even though 2 lanes were frozen and one lane had no weather effects. I noticed he did this every single turn since then, including a very obvious turn where he had to pass in round 2 but waited til the last moment.

I take a ton of time myself. I almost always see the timer spawn in this game since I think throughout the entire turn to minimize the impact of RNG.

I played a match where I was distracted so my first 3 plays were so bad once I realised what I was doing but I managed to still win the match because I passed at the right time so that I could set up a very strong round 2 which turned into a strong round 3. I love the strategy in this game.

There's been a few games where I've just lost to the last card because it's some insane gold card I don't have access to but I feel like my budget'ish deck can still compete with the more costly decks which is really good for a card game.

Prolly banking on people getting frustrated and forfeiting or botching strats. The legitimately worst meta.

Damnit.. I'm away from home on a family trip. By the time I get back to playing and improving I'm going ti be left so far behind I may never catch up.

My monster carnivorous deck was just starting to take form too.

Only way I'll continue is if I can get Yoshi's luck from now till then.
I still am baffled over that btw.

11 legendaries in 90 packs just shouldn't be possible (2 foils as well)

Oh that one!

Yeah I had those but removed them because I had too many cards focused on weather removal

I think ill add it back and remove the clear skies

It just feels like too much to carry like 5-6 cards to combat the Monster decks that carry like 10 weather cards

Wow, I was playing that green faction, scioa or whatever. Turn 2 this guy has 53 power on board, a lot carried over from the past turn, then I played cantarella. He plays RNR (that fireball weather spell) instead of passing out of fear that I would somehow play 50+ power over his hand size which was at least 5. Insane that he throws away a gold card like that and I already played my weather clear (vanhemar).

Anyway, I was talking on discord and then when I clicked back on the screen I accidentally mulled one of my best cards. I only had 2 cards left in the deck, an emissary (useless no bronze left), and peter. So I had a guaranteed draw on peter for round 3. Instead I lost triss to get peter with the emissary in hand. I ended up winning by 1 point still, but I almost threw the game hard in a pretty much guaranteed win scenario.

Yeah, I've seen it in hearthstone. People justify the behavior because it's surely within the rules to use all the time. And it should be. But still sucks on occasion where you're playing a single match so long you don't even feel like playing the game after, simply because your opponent wanted to play that way.

If I pass on round 3 when it's clear I'm going to lose and you go ahead and play every card left in your deck, you definitely are not getting a good game from me.

Taking a break now but after a shit night, did pretty well for myself. Hit rank 15 and am ranked ~175.

Dropped Tibor since everyone and their mother seems to have put in D bomb and that just turned everything right around. I welcome the nerf, he's dead to me anyway.

Nice, I'm only rank 13. Don't really see myself advancing until more people climb those. Been merely playing until the second daily reward for the past week though (never casual).

For those that didn't play closed beta and may be making it high up, a pro tip, don't stay in queue for more than 30 seconds. Around 30 seconds is when the matchmaking starts to really broaden the search, which is fine if you are low level because you will likely tag someone way higher then you which is a win/win for you because it's a very small loss but a huge bump if you win but the higher you go on the list, the more likely it is that you get paired with someone way below you for the opposite effect. Actually forgot that last night and lucked out and got paired with #13, ended up losing for only -8 rank points (I should have won, 1 of my emissaries and two golds were among the last 4 cards in my deck and I only ended up losing by 2 points) but yeah, good to keep in mind for others.

Hmm, they never got around to making an option for not broadening the matchmaking range huh.

Got to Rank 12, definitely starting to feel resistance in my climbing efforts now. Was stomping easily from Rank 7 which I calibrated at, now losing close matches due to not drawing exactly the card I need. I do want to make it to Top 500 this season, but that might require heavy grinding :/

Just got an animated vilgefortz from a keg choice. It seems like a card I am going to run now, but holy shit that animated card art is beast. If I could find an image I would link it. It's pretty sick though.

Good advice. I think last couple games I had received very little mmr.

edit:
Checked. I have 3 wins in a row against players 100mmr below me and I only rose 72 points. Assuming gwentracker is accurately reporting the numbers.
