Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

Just got an animated vilgefortz from a keg choice. It seems like a card I am going to run now, but holy shit that animated card art is beast. If I could find an image I would link it. It's pretty sick though.

Good advice. I think last couple games I had received very little mmr.

edit:
Checked. I have 3 wins in a row against players 100mmr below me and I only rose 72 points. Assuming gwentracker is accurately reporting the numbers.

Vilgefortz is top 2 premium card imo, only losing to Roach.

I actually used some of my meteorite powder to transmute both.

Taking a break now but after a shit night, did pretty well for myself. Hit rank 15 and am ranked ~175.

Dropped Tibor since everyone and their mother seems to have put in D bomb and that just turned everything right around. I welcome the nerf, he's dead to me anyway.

I don't have a problem with Tibor, he actually helped me win a game in ranked earlier. I'm playing queensguard, it's round 3 and my opponent has a 4-2 card advantage.

My only cards in hand are first light and sigfrida, Cerys counter is at 4. I'm thinking there's zero chance of winning. He drops Tibor turn one which gives me priestess. I use priestess to rez savage bear, he has a priestess in hand from my operator which he now can't play. So now the card advantage is tied.

I rez my 3 queensguard, rez cerys, use first light to draw my last priestess and rez bagpipe dude to buff queensguard and win the game.

I would have not been able to pull that combo off without Tibor giving me a card.

What was funny is he had the Iorveth avatar and did the "it's about using your brains not bravery" quote at the start of round 3. :p

If I pass on round 3 when it's clear I'm going to lose and you go ahead and play every card left in your deck, you definitely are not getting a good game from me.

This is why I just forfeit when I know I can't win the 3rd round. I've even started to resort to waiting for the opponents GG before I send mine in some games, usually when I win. If you aren't giving me a GG, you ain't getting one either.

For those that didn't play closed beta and may be making it high up, a pro tip, don't stay in queue for more than 30 seconds. Around 30 seconds is when the matchmaking starts to really broaden the search, which is fine if you are low level because you will likely tag someone way higher then you which is a win/win for you because it's a very small loss but a huge bump if you win but the higher you go on the list, the more likely it is that you get paired with someone way below you for the opposite effect. Actually forgot that last night and lucked out and got paired with #13, ended up losing for only -8 rank points (I should have won, 1 of my emissaries and two golds were among the last 4 cards in my deck and I only ended up losing by 2 points) but yeah, good to keep in mind for others.

So far even in top 1000 my queue's don't last longer than 10 seconds so that helps. Unlike in closed beta where top 1000 would last multiple 30 sec cancels..

Keep in mind, you started frequenting top 1000 a lot more once people were tired of the meta and had moved on. But yes, I haven't noticed it at all except when I break into top 300 so far (which I fell out of again, I'm slingshoting so much lol)

A lot more people in open beta. So I think que's will be fast for a while. Until meta gets really stale yea.

I'm up to Rank 5 now after getting quite a few Casual games under my belt this weekend. I've been alternating between a Queenguard based Skellige deck and a dwarf based Scoia'tael deck. They seem to be pretty good starter decks for someone who's not buying kegs with real money.

Since getting Cramner, I'll be sticking with the Scoia'tael deck for now. He's a really useful card. I've gone five or so games unbeaten since I got him. Getting Zoltan was a nice stroke of luck too.

The decks I've been facing seem to be a lot more varied at this level than what you higher ranked guys have been describing. I definitely seem to be facing more Nilfgaard opponents than I was when I first started though. I only played as them in a few challenges but they seem pretty effective.

Wow, look at that pos that didn't GG a good match. He barely won by 2 points.

Edit: WTF is this crap. Why am I playing (as rank 9) against people with rank 11 and lvl 20+. No wonder that I keep losing + they always play Scoia/Nilf.

Aaaand I did my second forfeit in ranked right at the start of the game. Opponent was Nilfgaard and I drew crap. Not a single way to get Morkvarg, no Wild Boar, not a single gold card and not even bronze units that I could use for combo buffing. Hands like this against Nilfgaard? Why should I even try, lol.

Edit2: Holy moly, why is this game dead set on letting you play against opponents with two ranks higher than you.

Nilfgaard, Nilfgaard, Nilfgaard, Nilfgaard, Nilfgaard, Nilfgaard...

Edit2: Nilfgaard again, Lvl 23+ and Mercenary tag. Threw cow carcasses at me, four times, I was able to dodge around it with them never triggering. He playe Tibor as his last card in round 3. I expected it and played my last one, Dimeritium Bomb, and threw a "not bad, not bad at all" at him beforehand.

GG on both sides. It was a really good game.

Uh, Crach? That's one of the reasons why the Morkvag deck thats being played a lot right now is so good - guaranteed buffed Morkvag.

Started playing again over the weekend, it's changed a fair bit since last time I played it, it's a really good game, but, for me, the lack of a companion mobile game just kills it for me, at least to invest any kind of time on it.

Every match tonight I win in ranked it freezes and doesn't count the win. But boy when I lose it sure does.

Ranked always counts, if you are freezing, you are likely losing points from that. If you just mean that the after game report isn't updating, that's just a visual bug. Your rank on their server side leader board is adjusting and you can exit and re-enter the game for it to show.

I'm playing as F2P every game since open beta started, ~6-8 rounds a day (and a couple of days ~18 rounds) and got two legendaries so far: Coral and Ciri which is pretty lucky I guess. Too bad I don't play Skellige though.

I main Monsters and now I'm debating if I should strive to craft Crones or not. I also lack Frightener at the moment. Crafting Crones would postpone me from getting Caranthir and other improtant Monsters legendaries.

The card that steals your highest value card which is then spying for you revives as a non-spying card for your opponent if it has that possibility? Doesn't seem fair...

Edit; wait, troll me how :lol? Cuz I main Nilf?

I really don't get why Cantarella is Nilf staple.

Okay, I put her down on turn 1. I get card advantage, but I essentially have to pass that turn.

I'm risking losing the game because I pass very early on, I have one extra card but I have to struggle hard and dedicate round 2 in order to win.

And that's best case scenario... draw Cantarella round 3 and opponent always wins.

If you forfeit though, doesn't that make it impossible for your opponent to send you a good game? Any time someone has forfeited to me, it doesn't give me the option to give them a good game.

I know if I buy any kegs, it'll just be dupes or crap cards.

I think buying Ultimate Team packs on FIFA when I was a kid and getting a load of rubbish has scarred me.

Cantarella does 2 things really well.

The primary use is when you win round 1, on round 2 you drop that thing and you draw a card. Your opponent has to play a card or lose the game, so it creates a card advantage. You basically play this card when you intend to pass already, usually on round 2, occasionally on round 1 but after you've set it up to draw a silver/gold (or higher chance of drawing).

The second thing is tied into what nilf does really well right now, which is draw all their bronze cards thinning out their deck with emissary and novices. Cantarella can draw silvers and golds. So you want to have cantarella draw a silver or gold. You can set this up 2 ways. The aforementioned thinning your deck with emissary/novice of your bronzes AND if you're playing calveit leader that card sets cantarella up as well. Calveit shows you the top 3 cards, you play one and put them back. And when you put them back you put them back in the order they were shown, so you can guarantee a silver or gold draw if it's the left most card of the 2 cards that are put back.

There is a third thing you can do with cantarella, summon it with rainfarn and that basically turns it into a draw a card for -4 power which is nice but right now nilf has usually no problems drawing all their cards. But it is a way to make cantarella work when you don't have it in hand and don't want to worry about drawing it later on in the game where it would be dead draw. Some games cantarella is the last card in my deck on r3 and it just never sees play.

I'd also imagine it's a good trigger for igni, a card I don't have yet.

Yes I use Canterella to set up Ignis if they try to play around it.

Careful! Getting a Legendary as your level 20 reward resets your pity timer in kegs!

https://www.reddit.com/r/gwent/comments/6fev94/careful_getting_a_legendary_as_your_level_20/

So basically, if you want to be efficient, you should get yourself to lvl 19. Then buy packs until you get your legendary and then level up to 20. That way you get x2 legendaries and the pity timer shouldn't have reset and fucked you up.

CDPR just replied, doesn't seem to be true.

Level up rewards are not related to opening kegs in any way.

I just lost a game it said "game out of sync" and it gave me a defeat? wtf. I had that game in the bag. I assume it ended as a loss because my opponent went first and had more power because I was in the middle of my first turn... Wow these devs need to step up their shit.

It's not CD projekt's fault though. Sync errors can easily be triggered by players to drop the game, and it always happens when one's about to win.

Thinking of cutting operator from my queensguard deck. Giving an extra card to the opponent that he can discard in later rounds isn't a good trade for one extra queensguard and it's tricky to use on anything else late in the game.

I'm told it's a known bug, so hopefully they will fix it.

I just played a skells who played that card. When it didn't give me a bronze copy I was pretty certain I had the game won. Extra info heheh.

Plus he had already summoned his queensguards. I banished one so r3 he only had 2 and if he hadn't resurrected it the turn he did I was gonna steal one.

Does anyone else feel like one extra slot of silver would be perfect in order to create the ultimate deck :lol?

Pff, pain is easily overcome by playing games.

Sitting at my computer desk is about the only thing that doesn't cause me extreme pain. :p

Even then I get small spasms of pain every now and then.

I've never had a cracked rib before and trying to lay down is such a painful experience. Even if I manage to find a comfortable position it takes insane effort to get up lol.

It's so awful.......

I am fed up of Nilfgaard already, John Calveit makes up like 70% of the ladder. I don't even have a losing record Vs them but it's so boring facing them all the time. I never see ST and only rarely SK.

After I got rank 14, I had to watch a tv show, but with subs so couldn't focus enough for ranked. Went to casual and made a random ST buff deck.

Get matched against rank 17(!) #4 on leaderboard player. Who's playing swims spellgaard deck (same one I used to get to rank 14).

And I beat him with this basic as fuck deck lol.

Any tips on how to beat the "Dragon's Cultists" challenge. It uses a fuck ton of fogs and manages to hoard onto it's cards for the whole match only to release the meteor card on the third round. So I use all my clear weather cards by that point and have 2 cards to defend my self. Which then he kills me.

"Casual" right now is full of fucks that need to get a life
