Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

How do I beat weather ST? I've reach the point (rank 14-15) where the people I'm playing against are really smart with their DBPs now and it's no longer a trivial matter of sniping a misplay.

I'm guessing I'll have to tech in Sweers?

I'm only rank 11 so I'm probably not facing your level of opponents but I always found getting the upper hand in the card draw for round 3 is a huge deal against them.

They will always hold those DBP's in hand until the last turn and if you can wait it out with a card advantage you can just scorch the DBP's. Unless they run that elf that boosts a card in their hand the DBP's should all be the same strength.

Sweers wouldnt really do anything unless your running reveal cause the DBP gets held on to until the last moment at a pass or at the end of round 3.

Saw this on reddit :p

And while we all hate certain forms of RNG in hearthstone, that RNG also leads to variance in play whereas this game has a lot less of that.

I agree that strong neutrals will find its way into every deck and so become ubiquitous (hello, Ciri), but I can't agree about variance. Why should we want to increase variance in the game? Less is good. Being able to control randomness is good.

You definitely want variance in the game otherwise you're grinding out the same matches over and over again. You basically are agreeing with me when you say cards like ciri is an issue, because if every deck runs ciri then that reduces variance such that every game is very similar. I'm not talking about randomness, although that will always exist because it's a card game.

There are definitely cards that will need to be tuned, not just limited to neutrals. Almost every Nilfgaard deck runs Calveit as leader, mostly on the strength of Imperial Golems. Being able to thin out 3 Bronze cards from the deck on the first turn is quite the tempo swing. Still its a beta, and after all the big changes from the previous patch, some tuning is still needed and expected.

Learn to fucking play!

Just played 3 matches in a row where in round 2 someone used ragnarok and in round 3 used drought.

That nerf is not enough. Should be 1 damage each turn

The calveit leader is not just for golems though, it synergizes with all the draw cards. Calveit reveals the top 2 cards of your deck since the 2 you don't pick are put back in order. If the top card is a unit joachim is great at pulling, then you know it's okay to play joachim. Or the top card is a gold you can play cantarella to draw it. It'll even predict your emissary pulls as that too draws the first 2 bronze cards.

Emhyr decks need to be different than calveit decks. A lot are pale imitations. It's true golems work better with calveit because you can thin your deck from them on turn 1 ensuring you get better pulls with emissary. So for emhyr to be worth playing, it probably needs to be built very different. I am not sure the cards are there to support a good deck that is not just a weaker version of calveit.

At least vanhamer buff to 4 power will help ensure it survives more often to be bounced and replayed. Then peter is also another great bounce target.

I think maybe emhyr could have used a power buff. The reveal guy has 6 power. Compared to 3 of emhyr. Emhyr feels like a glorified decoy when you're just replaying the minion. In some ways worse because decoy strengthens the target. If you strengthen a roach to 8 and bring it back with assire, it'll remain 8 next time it's autoplayed.

imo monsters is way more powerful than calveit NG atm anyways. Monsters is probably the strongest faction atm.

Monsters has tons of bronzes that require locks that are difficult to deal with and can provide huge tempo swings.

Yeah, Monsters are quite strong, at least the current weather variety. Consume will get stronger as well next patch. I have been doing quite decently with Dagon Fog, even against harder matchups like Spell'tael.

Even without weather going against monsters is rough, unless your running spell.

Caelano Harpies, can't really do anything about them even with locks, (it's not efficient to use a lock against em). Arachas Devourer is a bronze that requires a lock, Then you got the crones, which you can't punish. It's a 20 point 1 card swing that you can't do anything about unless your running spell.

You got vran warriors which are making a comeback.

edit: Monsters is probably the only faction in the game where you can play minions and not get punished for it, which is fucked up.

I could still go on rants for days about celaeno harpies. It's a freaking 7 strength base bronze card that goes into 13 base strength that requires zero setup.

It's the strongest bronze unit in the game. It's better than base Geralt which requires you being behind to get the full 13 value out of.

I'm sure as hell I will welcome the extra scrap in the new patch, because crafting seems the only way to get silvers or golds. I think my last 12 kegs or so have been only bronzes.

Man, I have a bunch of kegs that I am having a hard time resisting opening. I really needed the patch to hit yesterday.
Me too, stay strong. Sitting on 3 kegs and 1000 ore, gonna keep doing 18 round dailys with my only deck until the patch hits, or stop just before I turn lvl 20.

Just got Ragnarook and transmuted it now i have both weathers premium should give me 3600 scraps :D
3200 :p

Why not just open now? You already know which cards that're getting nerfed so you know which cards to pick

So I am wondering, if you buy kegs now and you don't mill the contents, you get double value, right? They said they would refund some value of a purchased keg not milled cards.

Yeah, we'll get compensated with scraps for each purchased keg pre-patch
There are likely more cards that are changed, and I'd like to know exactly which ones to maximise mill value.
Ah, I had no idea they'd make more changes - do we know why they didn't go through it all last live stream?

Tilting so hard again, just keep on losing over and over. 2-7 so far today. Dropping from top 1000 to 3500k on leaderboard now. 2300mmr or some dumpster ass shit. I don't get how I keep losing so much.

Opposite of what happened to me. Was surprisingly easy to get to rank 15 and into top 1000. 3-1 yesterday, 5-1 today. I guess not playing against SC spell deck helped a lot.

Why is everyone waiting to open kegs for the new patch?

So yeah, my Gwent playtime on Gog appears to be stuck on 63h for multiple days.

Anyone else?

Gwent salt is real, I love it.

My playtime is at like 870 hours (lol) and is definitely still moving.

The lack of variety of decks in this game is so bad. There's like 3 maybe 4 decks and 90% of them are dagon monsters and John Calveit NG. If they can't make it so there's more variety then the game is not going to last as long as they'll want. I mean there'll always be people playing it but competitively it'll be a joke.

Dropped to 5502 on the leaderboard, 2268 mmr. Think I should just stop playing this for a few days. I know I won't but I should. Seriously dropping 4k on the leaderboard in days. I'll never get top 1000 anymore this season. Let alone rank 15 at this rate. Oh well, at least I got top 1000 in closed beta.

Finally hit rank 16. What a shit show of a week, happy to have finally come out on top of it. Was down to 2450 at one point, I think.

I think they plan to be much more aggressive with cards changes and balancing in this game which is where the long term nature will come from in all honesty. I bet every new release of cards is going to come with a laundry list of changes so much so that it'll be a different game each time.

That's all prediction though.

The bug where you don't get rank score because the game crashes on the scoreboard is so fucking shit.

God this game is pissing me off today.

Close game, re-open, points are now there. Happens to me here and there, always catches the points. As long as the game declared you victor before the freeze, you're fine.

Ah ok, I did check and I could have sworn it didn't give me the points but maybe I just didn't remember correctly how many I previously had.

What other card games do you play that have significantly more than 3-4 top tier decks?

I don't want to bump the other thread again but I just saw your missed post in the closed beta thread Zemm. Clicked in there and was trying to figure out where the hell I was lol

I don't really care if a deck is top tier or not, I just want variety. HS right now is actually really good for variety because pretty much every class is viable so they all get enough play time where it feels like you're facing different classes and decks a lot. In Gwent right now it's all NG and Monsters (although almost all NG) with practically zero variety. NG is obviously strong but I don't feel unfavoured against them which is good, but I hate how almost every game is against them. It could be the weakest deck ever and I'd still find it a bit shit playing them all the time.

I haven't seen a ST, NR or even a SK in two days at rank 10 and 11. When I went to casual there was a bit more variance as I guess that's where people go to play weaker decks.

I'm definitely prepared to give Gwent time but it's something I hope they are looking at because for me at least, a lack of variety is more of a game killer than anything else.

Variety is important and I see way too much NG but I've seen a decent spread I feel, I've personally seen Skellige a LOT, on par if not more than monsters. Scoitael and NR are the main two standing out on the low end for me.

Still, I like that they're going through some card tweaks at a pretty quick pace. It'll atleast freshen things up.
