Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

Yeah, NG Spies is super fun and what I've been playing so far. Tons of ways to approach each game based on your hand.

Also MAN Tibor is trash right now. I just had a guy play him against me, drawing me an Impera Brigade and I just used Vilgefortz on Tibor. Instant concede, lol.

Gold immunity being removed without actually reviewing or rebalancing Gold cards made a lot of them worse off than before. Golds either need partial immunity, against Bronze/Silver, or a total overhaul to rebalance the stats and cards in the new environment.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of it now. So many are pure trash, like Succubus will never go off now. The game in general is way more fun though and the meta is a lot better. I'd just like them to change even more gold cards, for succubus just adding some armour would make her not trash tier.

Gaf Gwent Tournament #2 is here!

Sign-ups and info are over here!

Pretty much the same rules as last time, 1 match a week, round robin, no prizes and just for fun. Only big change is we switched to the official rules CDPR uses. More info on that on the page.

We'll let sign-ups run till next Monday, then we can start the games up.

Good luck. Wish I could sign up but on ps4

Hey, guys!

Just started this today and picked up the starter pack. My choices were Vesemir, Birna Bran, and Woodland Spirit.

I already had a copy of Woodland Spirit, so I took Birna despite Vesemir being a neutral.

Now...I'm kind of at a loss as to what to build. lol
I feel like all of the factions (other than the blue one) look pretty interesting. Is this game pretty beginner-friendly?

I wouldn't say that, but you will get the hang of it once you've learned the basics of how the cards and their point system work (+card synergy, terms, crafting...). You will almost always learn something new while you go at it. Really rewarding and fun. Also i think this is the most beautiful looking card game out there. Those illustrations are something else.

It has enough tutorials and tutorial-challenges to learn the game properly, I would say.

I'm sorry, I meant, can you still have fun playing Ranked without having access to a ton of paid kegs?

Is the game fairly grind-friendly? I don't mind supporting the game financially, but I usually save my purchases for new cards / sets.

The game is very generous in rewards. Just play ranked as soon as you can for extra rewards.

Well, i would probably pass ranked until you have a healthy collection of cards to build upon. Though if you don't mind losing, then go for it. Rewards are better there yes.

Well, i would probably pass ranked until you have a good collection of cards to build upon. To get there you have to do some grinding and that can take some time.

This is a mistake that gets perpetuated a lot. You should absolutely play ranked the second it unlocks. Low level ranked is full of complete brain dead players. It is an uphill battle but you lose such a negligible amount of MMR compared to giant gains from a win that you will almost always come out ahead over time if you even have a slight modicum of skill and you get so many kegs/scraps for just a few rank ups.

You can really do some crazy shit with summoning circle beyond cloning spies. My opponent did a R3 skellige storm to a white frost, then played a mage. If I hadn't had Circle, my board would've probably been toast. Just cloned them to first light and boom. I also cloned an opponent's Avallach once for giggles, which ended up working out for me strangely enough. I was testing out a Calevit "screw-with-their-draw" deck seeing if R1 Guardian plus Magne filling their hand with clones of trash 6 star bronzes could work and my opponent was running some kind of ST mulligan/hyperthin deck. Watching them being forced to play a ton of golems was fun even if I still ended up losing horribly.

Brainiacs with all them better golds and silvers though, that can win them games almost by just showing up. You know this would happen! Knifes to a gunfight.

By the time he has ranked unlocked it should be fine, you climb so much faster now that there shouldn't really be anything all that crazy at the bottom, and personally speaking when I was getting ranked unlocked I was fighting much harder decks at level 8/9 than I was for quite awhile in ranked.

Either way Gwent is one of the most generous FTP games I've seen, even just doing the 6 round dailies adds up a lot. Ranked feels good to climb in due to all the rank up rewards, and season end showers you in even more. I've mostly been doing the 6 per day, started when the open beta landed and was able to hit Master on ladder without really focusing on it, and from the various balance changes to the sheer amount of keg drops I already have a whole bunch of golds, a ton of scrap, and a bunch of extra cards I haven't milled.

You won't get to the top of ranked anyway, so might as well play to get at least like 5 kegs, 50 scraps, 100 meteorite. That's at rank 6. Plus end season rewards which are insane.

Plus everybody in early ranks won't have all cards, the ones that do will move to higher ranks faster. You barely lose mmr at all when you start now too. So the only thing losing will matter for is your winrate. Which will reset at the end of the season.

No reason not to play ranked straight away.

Dude that was number 5 or 6 on the ladder earlier today had more losses than wins so it's not like win rate matters anyway. It's all about win streaks.

Hotfix is out, SK buffs, ST Nerfs and some fixes.

DI93O70XUAAOZo7.jpg:large

New hotfix for GWENT: The Witcher Card Game now available on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

With this update, our main focus was to fix all of major issues, which players were experiencing plus additional changes to gameplay, specifically for Scoia'tael and Skellige.

Cards which were significantly changed, will have increased value for milling for 3 days following the release of the hotfix. The cards on the list, when milled, will create an amount of scraps and powder equal to the amount of scraps and powder needed to craft a card of the same value.

Dwarven Agitator
Iris
Kambi
Morenn
Sage
Stammelford's Tremors
Summoning Circle
Vrihedd Officer
Elven Wardancer

Full list of changes can be found here:

Neutral/General

Summoning Circle has gained the following Category tags: Doomed
Stammelford's Tremmors will now summon a Lesser Guardian instead of an Earth Elemental.
Iris' ability has changed. It is now: Deathwish: Boost 5 random Units on the other side of the Board by 5.

Skellige

Tuirseach Veteran will now also trigger the Veteran abilities of other Tuirseach Veterans.
An Enemy moved by the Whale Harpooner will now be Damaged by the number of all Units, including itself, on the row it moved to.
Clan Tuirseach Axeman Power changed from 3 to 4.
Herbalist Power changed from 1 to 2.
Kambi loyalty changed from Loyal to Disloyal.
Kambi will now spawn Hemdall on its side of the Board.
Harald the Cripple will now Damage by 2 instead of by 1 on Deploy.
Harald the Cripple Power changed from 6 to 5.

Scoia'tael

Sage will now Banish the card it Resurrects.
Farseer will no longer Boost self when Units in your Deck are Boosted.
Morenn Power changed from 8 to 7.
Dwarven Agitator Power changed from 3 to 2.
Elven Wardancer Power changed from 4 to 3.
Vrihedd Officer will now Boost self by the base Power of the card from your Hand you Mulligan, not the card you Draw.
Vrihedd Officer Power changed from 6 to 4.

Game Fixes

Several tweaks to tooltips in various languages.
Fixed an issue whereby Aeromancy was able to summon Drought.
Fixed an issue whereby Cockatrice was not being Boosted after playing Triss: Butterfly Spell and Yennefer: The Conjurer.
Fixed an issue whereby Ithlinne had the Agent tag despite being Loyal.
Fixed an issue whereby Saskia's ability would not trigger if you had less than 2 other cards in your Hand and/or less than 2 Bronze cards in your Deck.
Fixed an issue whereby if Morenn was face down after both players had passed, she would flip over.
Fixed an issue whereby some players were not able to open Kegs.
Fixed an issue whereby Jotunn was able to target unrevealed Ambushes.
Fixed an issue whereby Dun Banner Heavy Cavalry was able to remove its own Armor.
Fixed an issue whereby Kayran did not Boost self by 8 when face down Toruviel was the only target for Consume.
Fix an issue whereby Bekker's Twisted Mirror would trigger twice if the Highest Unit had more than 20 Power.

The game is one of the most generous F2P games out there.

Also just play ranked, at least there you'll be mostly matched with people that have the same ranking as you and therefore a similar amount of cards unlocked. In casual you can be matched with anyone. You'll also be working towards the end of season rewards. There's no reason not to play ranked.

Hotfix is out and due to the nerfs to Tremors/Officer i've already played 5 games in a row against Northern Realms. They played the exact same cards in the exact same order. Just a bunch of drones that ruin the game. Seriously, this community sucks.

Oh yeah, shit. Did a lot of armor to counter the stammelford and mulligan decks, but it shat completely on most other decks.

Now stammelford and mulligan is adjusted, but armor is... Unchanged?

Damn. Never thought a premium Stennis would actually Be useful. But I'd feel bad playing it. Urgh.

...It looks like I can't queue in Casual anymore? Queuing for more than 5 minutes each time and no matches found, just end up being dumped in deck selection screen again.

Matches were pretty quick in ranked, but I kinda want to try out new decks in casual before jumping straight to ranked with them...

Had a bad day yesterday and went like 5-8 or something, I was tired though and shouldn't have played. 3-0 today so going to stop there. Heading towards rank 18. Season only just started and being so high so early is a good feeling. Still almost 2 months left to try for top 1000.

So I haven't played since the closed Beta and now I don't know where to start: should I do all the challenges first? Just jump into Casual play?

I.....don't like this pro ranked system.

I feel like it just rewards the no lifers. You have to play 400 games to really even unlock your score fully and you aren't even seeing the MMR changes from match to match so aside from winning=good and losing=bad you aren't getting feedback unless you go to the website and look yourself up each time (which has been slow updating in between matches anyway).

It's only for the real pro's that would go to all tournaments and travel the world for it. That's how I see it anyway. If you really want crown points and go to these events you can't say nope I gotta work I can't travel there. It's for people who do nothing else and wanna make money of this.

It was never meant for normal players. If you do wanna do all that stuff, you'd have to play 400 games to practice to be on par with the others anyway.

Considering all the travel is on CDPR's dime, this isn't really the case, your typical person can take off a few days here and there for work when a lot of this takes place over the weekend. People were also qualifying for the challenger and the last open with less than 400 games because it's not about ramming your head against a play count, it's about skill. Yes, there is something to be said about practice and understanding the meta but it comes to a point where reps don't mean much, either you have the mid for it or you don't.

Yeah, I consider myself a pretty active player of the game (more than 550 hours according to GOG, I'm sure they were missing a bunch when I started playing the game without launching through GOG), but in both closed beta and season 1 I don't think I clocked 400 ranked games. On top of that you're asking me to play for nothing other than crown points, i.e. nothing other than then the chance to enter tournaments, as opposed to the regular ranked rewards. All in all a pretty big disincentive for me to play the pro ladder.

Hell, my gog timer is just over 1000 hours and I maybe barely did 400 matches during the closed beta ranked season., definitely not last season.

i haven't looked at it recently, but one of the earlier announcements basically required you to play it like a full time job just to get enough games to inflate your rating high enough

Still effectively the same, I know the said they made a chance but they didn't really.

I just find it to be a shame, Gwent felt like it was going for a more approachable pro scene in that your average joe could break in but now it's catering more to the MaggoGX's of the world who are B-tier players at best but have the time to literally play gwent during every waking hour.

I have 50 more losses than wins now. Can't beat the meta unless you play the meta. I was positive before this patch. Such good balance.

Yay hit rank 18 and joined the master ranks. Nobody is rank 21 yet, wonder if I should play ranked a bit less to prevent going too high too quickly and getting super hard match ups maybe. But if I want top 1000 I'll have to get hard match ups anyway so hm.

Edit: Went 8-3 today and almost rank 19 now sweet! Top 1000 should be doable I hope. Was at #3867 when I was done.

I built this pseudo Skellige deck that just completely fucks with my opponent. Breaks their synergy, chips away their units, steals their cards, and locks the units.

It's fun!

Still going through the single-player challenges and have most of them unlocked.

I think I like Scoia the most, followed by Skellige and Monsters. I want to make an elf deck...is that even a thing?

My strongest decks are Skel and Monsters though namely because I have Birna Bran and Monsters because I have Woodland Spirit. Weather-focused Monster decks are pretty good (I feel), but lack context.

Itching to start hitting Quick Play, but I don't feel like I have any of the Silvers or Golds I want to make what I want to play.... : /

Elf deck is one of the top tier metas right now, also just go into quick play, you'll lose but doing the dailies is the fastest way to get new cards and packs, you'll have a good collection before long.

Hit 4k/rank 19 and almost top 1000 yesterday. Then I lost 3 in a row after that lol. But still, almost there.

Gaf tournament is cancelled I suppose due to lack of interest!

I'm just inside top 1000. Been hitting pro ladder as hard as I reasonably can and just play a regular match when I see that I got passed up on top 1000. Only been getting +15-20 or so on a win but that's enough to bump myself up 150 spots at a time so seems like I'm in the middle of a big bottleneck but that's fine with me.

Also, sorry about the tournament, didn't see your message through gog until like7 days after you sent it lol
