Is it still too early to celebrate or can I go ahead and get plastered?

HOLY SHIT! MY PRAYERS HAS BEEN ANSWERED! I've been asking for this for the past 5 years now.

They must have seen my GAF posts.

I'm 1 of those 26 🦆roll

So if you play this game on the PC, you're basically playing a PC game about playing a PC (MMO) game?

.hack// is SAO without all the love harem BS. I hope if this remaster does well they consider reviving The franchise in the future. Especially with VR and MMO-like games being the hype nowadays.

Is it recommended to watch Roots before playing this one?
Recommended but not really necessary in my opinion
You can also just watch the terminal disc that comes with this if you want. It's a summary of the first four games, you should be good to go with that.

All they need to do now is add some form of VR support and we will have true gameception.

I can't remember exactly, did the original version of GU let you do a first person free look ? That could look nice in VR.

I've played all 4 of the 1st games already. I've been pretty interested in watching Roots anyway so I might as well.

I only played the original .hack Infection? or whatever, and thought it was okay, I just had too much other shit to play to go through them all. Not unlike now, but I will buy this anyway and hopefully actually play this one.

I watched the .hack//sign anime back in the day and it left off with a cliffhanger that I assume got resolved in the original 4 games, which I did not play.

So the timeline here is...

Sign anime
original games (recapped with Terminal disc?)
Roots anime
Then this collection?

Is that all I need or am I missing something else?

Its dot hack sign, the quad games , sign's 2 odd last episodes (one relating to a character in the game and mimiru(past) and the reunion episode which happens with the both casts after the game though I think its non canon due to gu) which were dvd/br released (not on TV), roots then GU trilogy(this HD remaster)

Yeah those should be enough to get the overall story. There was also a special episode that takes place after the events of the GU games but I haven't seen it. That might be worth checking out after you get through the rest of that list.

Localization is a go.

It goes without saying but everyone please support this release. We really have no excuse if we don't get anything .Hack related if this performs poorly, or rather performs poorly by whatever crazy expectations Bandai Namco has for this collection to sell. Getting left behind by Japan was awfully painful, and I don't want to relive that. Lets make this a success so we can get the other games! WHAT SAY YOU MY FELLOWS?!?!?! (
And then maybe we'll see a XenoSaga Collection on Switch someday!
)

I'm guessing it's harder to make IMOQ's art direction look good today with just a remaster.

I think G.U. in general is more marketable, on the top of being better in general (Gameplay-wise), it's wayyy more refined and of course it also has "modern" otaku pandering.

Also given the original games' quality, they wanted to relaunch the series, not tank it a second time. :P

Challenge to anyone that thinks Link gets to ridiculous/dumb:

Rewatch Online Jack ep.6

Then come back here an explain that shit lol.

Speaking of Online Jack, surely that was originally animated in HD? If not uh... it may end up looking kinda ugly x.x;

You say this but G.U. are the .hack games with the marriage/friendship event at the end and no less than 3 characters vying for the MC for a large chunk of the story!

The first 14 episodes kick off the plot an driving goal behind Haseo's actions. Everything after is character/world building for things that'll show up later in the games. Ep.24 is when the story catches up to the beginning of Vol.1. The final two eps have some heavy late game Vol.2 spoilers. But you'll prolly have worked those things out for yourself, especially if you're watching the show and playing the games sorta side-by-side so watching 'em before the end of Vol.2's no big deal.

Really hope this leads to a BD release of Roots. It was aired/animated in HD in Japan but alls we ever got were DVDs.

Bleh. It was trash. Worthless. Would have been the death knell of the series ending with that
I didn't think it was too bad. It felt kind of like a retelling of the original story and didn't really explain much in the context of the rest of the series, but on its own it was a nice little thing to watch.

OH YEAH BOY

How long is each episode btw?
30/35/25 for a regular non-100% playthrough of each.
45/52/62 for a 100% playthrough in which ya know what you're doin'.
05/08/11 for a skip all story only do mandatory stuff playthrough.

Those are my stats anyway >.>

Anyone who thought Link was to long/repetitve are in for the same experience now that these're compiled into 1 game!

Damn. I never played the GU games. I played the first 3 and just never got around to playing the 4th.

I remember the anime that came on Cartoon Network. One of my favorites. That was 2002. 15 years ago. I was 13 lol.

But yea I can't to try this out. Hopefully they bring over the first 4 games as well.

Ah, I remember the original .hack games. Wish they were bundling those with this.

Very interesting and strange concept at the time of a sort of single player MMO with you being able to recieve emails and such.

Only played the first two entries of the original series but always wanted to go back and do everything I missed.

Yea. I really loved that concept and thought it was executed well. You just had to buy 4 games to get the whole story lol.

Would be nice in the future if we got a MMO that resembles .hack. Hopefully when VR has advanced.

10 years after playing G.U., when the internet wasn't so accessible in my country yet, I now realize there was a fictional version of NeoGAF in the game, haha.

But seriously, does anybody know in what forum they based the virtual ingame forums?

Link has THE MAIN CHARACTER BEING SUCKED INTO THE GAME. His literal physical body. Not his mind, but his actual real self.

That is BEYOND stupider anything else the series has done.

It makes the series jump from Soft Sci-Fi to straight up Fantasy.

Goddamn Link is dumb.

Really hope they de-canonize it.

This was in play from the start of G.U. Terminal Disc doesn't outright say it of course but it works looking back on it. Heck, ya could argue this is what happened to Harald.

That is BEYOND stupider anything else the series has done.
Stupider than
Half a dozen children vanishing from plain sight (did you consider perhaps they to physically entered the game world at that time)? Giving somebody an electric shock? Being mind controlled by someone infected by some AI anomaly?
Thats just Online Jack ep.6. Its okay if the game world seeps out into the real world but not the opposite?

G.U.'s whole Avatar activation things always been way dumb btw. Also Cell's AI evolving from some persons blood sample... yeah. That sure was a thing wasn't it?
