.hack//G.U. Last Recode (HD remaster, PS4 and PC) coming out

Wow this is a surprise! I've always liked the world and concept of .hack and thought there could have been something more there if they pushed the IP after seeing the success of Sword Art Online and other "trapped in the digital world" stories.

Can anyone explain it simply this release ? From what I got from the thread, it's a remaster of the second trilogy of games. How many .hack games are there ?

Is it something that a newcomer can enjoy ?
Only the 7 main RPGS released in English

First quadrolgy: Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine

Second trilogy "G.U": Rebirth, Reminisce, Redemption

G. U is set years after IMOQ and only makes minor references to them. You might enjoy their more action based combat more than the MMO style combat of the first games so I'd recommend this G.U remaster over IMOQ. Pretty easy to get into. The game within a game setting and the lore surrounding it interested me.

There's .hack//Link which is a Japan only PSP action that is basically a big fanservice game with characters from all around the games, manga, anime, etc and .hack//Versus another Japan only PS3 fighting game similar to those Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games.

They are two stories released in episodic formats. One had 4 episodes/discs, other had 3. This is the second one, and yeah, you can jump in.

There are, I think 8 games in total.
4 for the original
3 the currently being remastered, sequel to the original 4
1 the psp game

You don't really need to play the others to understand what's happening. Though it would make things less confusing. If you want to get caught up, you could watch the 2 anime Sign and Roots.

Thanks. Will keep an eye on this then.

They might remake the first set of games eventually. Kinda like what they did with God Eater.

dot hack, and particularly G.U. were so significant to me in my youth. I am downright elated by this news! I am not sure if I can even say that these games (gameplay wise) are anything more than decent... but I am so excited.

How silly that nothing has made we want to buy a PS4 more than this!

I missed the .hack franchise the first time around on the PS2. Now with JPRGs far less common this generation, I guess I have a chance to give it a shot now.

AAAA!! This is the best news of all E3 week for me!!
I LOVE .hack and always wanted to play G.U., but I never got my hands on them and by the time I had my own money they had become obscenely expensive. x_x
Fingers crossed for western release to be real!

And I hope they'll eventually bring the original four to ps4, too!

never had the chance to play those, so I'd pick them up for sure

And maybe it sells enough for xenosaga to be greenlit

How you gonna post GOAT OST and forget SKEITH's boss battle theme? Heck, those quick guitar bits before each fight were great too!

Man, IMOQ remaster would have been outstanding, but they would have to redo EVERYTHING visually, especially if they want the new title to line up with how G.U. looks. In that case I understand remastering G.U., but it's also the .hack game set that I never finished. I will now with this set though!

... They WILL release the trilogy in one go, right? Not parse it out separately?

True story: I'm a .hack fan.

Only of .hack//SIGN though, and I watched that when I was basically still a teenager. Still, the music was amazing, and the concept was very novel at the time.

I'll buy this on PC.
Be prepared to change your way of thinking then because SIGN was more about existentialism and world-building while the games are more about kicking ass and destroying viruses.

I mean, everybody's different, but I have a friend who was completely shocked at how the games were different in tone from SIGN and that kind of turned him off on it. He eventually stuck with it to the end and wound up liking the games though.

Wow, this is the most exciting gaming news all week for me. I have wanted this (and a new .hack// with vr support) for so long. I look forward to playing through this again on day one.

.hack//G.U. (games)
.hack//G.U.+ (manga)
.hack//G.U. (novels)
.hack//G.U. Trilogy (movie)
.hack//Link (G.U. arc)
.hack//G.U. Last Recode

A story so nice, they needed ta tell it twi... uhh wait no. I got nothin' -.-;

Just wanted the story & timeline ta keep on moving foward, already done far more than enough lookin' back.

With that said the gameplay changes mentioned almost sound like they'll make 'em more bearable ta play. Kinda interested.

stil got 1-7 right next to me:

most gaffer give gamestop shit but thanks to them I was lucky to get Outbreak and Quarantine for ~$30 rather than $100 they were going for even like 8 years ago!

I also found the last 3 for pretty decent prices at gamestop over the years as Infection was the only one I bought at launch.

I've actually only played a demo of the original .hack back in the day, but never got around to buying it because I was poor. I really enjoyed the demo and was super intrigued by what I played. I'll definitely pick this up. How many games are included in the package? The linked web page in the OP wouldn't load for me here at work.

So this is just skipping IMOQ? Did i miss a remaster for the originals?
There weren't any. However that stories been told as many times as G.U.'s has by now. This G.U. re-release will include the Terminal Disc stuff, which largely goes over the main plot of IMOQ so there is that.

Gotya. Well I'm not sure how I feel about that, but these one play better anyway so I guess it's alright.
