If you had to put up with those kinds of effects, day in, day out, almost every single game, for years, you would.
An American friend of mine played on my host the other day, and experienced the same crap those of us outside the US do (though he was on Comcast, so that probably accounted for half his problems). You know what happened? He couldn't stand one game of it. When we explained that we had that all the time, he seemed lost for words.
I don't think a lot of people in the US can comprehend what it's like. I know they hate it when some other region does get host, and will bitch about it like mad, but that's one game out of millions. If people did understand what it's like, they certainly wouldn't be so quick to make comments like "you don't hear me complaining", or "get a better connection", or whatever.
And it is a Halo problem, because few games ignore latency as much. Certain Bungie employees have even had the audacity in the past to claim that host/latency/et al actually have no effect (to which I say, play on my host and tell me that). Most games use a browser model at the moment, and give you an indication of ping and the quality of the connection as well as where the user is based.
If I had the option of matching up in my region only, I would not have a problem. What I do have a problem, is hardly ever getting host, and having my bullets hit but not counting, my beatdowns never work. Hell sometimes even grenade sticks don't work. I'm tired of things being A) one-sided and B) that it's other regions that are constantly on the receiving end, ealmost non stop, and C) I have no way of solving this, other than playing in German and setting MM to "My Language".
If I have the Hammer, I get killed by the Mauler's melee (fine, the Mauler can kill you before you swing it). If I have the Mauler, despite hitting someone first, I get killed by the Hammer. I have been assassinated from the front. Hell in one case, I've shot a shieldless enemy in the head with a BR 4 times (saved films confirming a hit each time). I've actually almost been killed because I stopped shooting; I couldn't believe he was still alive.
All this because Bungie fails to deal properly with an obvious networking issue. One that other games have been dealing with fine since ... ages.
Very few other games will make you suffer such latency constantly, and even fewer actually pretend as if it has no effect.
