Halo 4 Announced (MS Conf, 2012, Start Of New Trilogy)

The of Reach hate in this game makes me sad. To me Reach was the pinnacle of gameplay for the series and had the best campaign. If Halo 4 builds on Reach I will be a very happy camper.
I disagree, Reach's story had so much potential, and bungie just ruined it.

Amid all these speculations about gameplay and story, there are somethings I think 343 just has to get right.

To me it starts with interface. After slugging through TERRIBLE interfaces lately... Going back to play Reach was a joy. Clean, easy to look at, and when you navigated it, it was smooth, responsive and had a good 'feel'. What worries me if that interface on the main menu on Anniversary was TERRIBLE. Movement/feel was horrible. It maybe a small thing to some, but interface to me is a good reflection of a polished project.

Speaking of polish, I hope they get the game DONE before the summer. Then 343 can shine this baby up, tighten up those graphics on Lvl 3, kill dem bugs. Give the whole game a feel like every piece of it from top to bottom was given the same attention to detail and design that we've come to expect from Bungie previously. Part of me thinks these are impossible goals for a new developer to just excel on when Bungie had years 10+ years making Halo games. But if people were brought into 343 with the intent to match, or even excel past those standards.. I have hope.

Until I don't. Then I'll bitch on the internet.

Edit: Nevermind what I posted. Instead LISTS!

I'd say Halo 2 and Halo 3 were about on a par with each other, with Halo 2 slightly edging it.

Reach just isn't competition.

It all depends on whether or not you like the Arbiter and/or the Flood. I don't, so Halo 2 sucks for a good 50 % of the game. Halo 1 sucks for the last 30 % of the game. Halo 3 sucks for the 15 % levels with the flood. Halo Reach is great. My ranking is:

Halo Reach
Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3
Halo 1 (Anniversary and Classic)
Halo 2

If you're talking multiplayer that would change of course.

Halo 2
Halo Reach
Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3

Halo CE>Reach>ODST>3<>2.

Both 2 and 3 are pretty bad. ODST began a return to form that Reach continued.

Reach is on par with CE as a pure game, but CE being new at the time with all those new feelings it caused is hard to ever beat.

Cant believe how much I'm enjoying Anniversary, as proof how good CE was. All the reviewers criticisms about dated design was pure bunk.

ODST multiplayer better than Halo 3 multiplayer? Your opinion is by definition, void.

I'm surmising. I'd preferably be gloomy and pessimistic, and get pleasantly surprised than the other way around.

I find Halo is becoming my favorite series again, overtaking Gears of War.

I really really like MS new philosophy of bring Halo's more frequently. A halo every 3 years, just isn't getting it done. It doesnt have to be a yearly iteration, but it cant be, go dark for two years after every Halo game as MS put it.

I'm loving that I'm loving Anniversary right now, Reach the year before, and will be playing Halo 4 in just a few months. It's great.

Halo reach does have the most gorgeous cutscenes though :)

If only what was going on in the cutscenes had more substance :( outside of a couple (halsey) which actually told a story, most were wrap up or point A/point B

I've been a massive Halo fan since launch day on the Xbox, and it's kinda hard to argue against Reach based on the lack of flood alone.

The flood is that fucking annoying that it drags down every halo game with them in it.

I still see Reach as a wasted opportunity. The destruction of the planet was never fully captured, I never felt like I was on a planet ready to be destroyed. They could have displayed this so much better in multiple cutscenes than just the one where you see the city burn. I mean for gods sake there are so many people on Reach and you only see them for one mission and thats it. Halo: Reach felt more like a city being invaded than a planet.

I find that a lot of people who didn't really play much Halo in the past enjoy Reach whereas long term Halo fans find it disappointing because it doesn't really contain the elements of gameplay they enjoy from the series.

Out of curiosity, is this true for you? Of course many long term Halo players enjoy Reach so im not saying it is the case, im just curious though. Did you play the older games a whole bunch? If so what makes Reach seem like the pinnacle of the series?

Funny, as a long-time Halo player, Reach was a breath of fresh air coming off the bland and uninspiring Halo 3. The people I see praising Halo 3 are mostly people that started with that game and never played the previous two, or didn't that much.

If these ranking lists are going to continue, then at least, for the sake of discussion, could we say why?

Cliffhanger? Can't think of anything else that makes you think that.

That, and no E3 mission (not enough Earth) stuff. I did have a lot of fun with the Action replay mods for the campaign like a huge Elites vs Master Chief battle on the bridge. Now I LOVE all the campaigns but it comes down to which I love the least.

The E3 mission had everything scripted up. The Metropolis level in H2 was damn fun and worked out well looking back. Would I have loved for more Earth-bound levels? Absolutely, and it's a shame we couldn't get to.

That's how I view each campaign after Halo 1. Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo Reach each had their selective moments in a level or two, but none were as memorable or as thrilling all around as Halo 1. Simple as that.

For the sake of discussions I guess:

Campaign (gameplay)
Halo 1
-Most intense and also fairest Halo game. Enemies constantly spawn all around you (which hardly happens in other Halo games) which makes it a lot more hectic. Also, I never feel cheated when I die like in some other Halo games. Lastly, I felt like you could use a larger variety of weapon effectively even on Legendary.
Halo 3
-Has good encounters but is dragged down by the Brutes and I felt like the vehicle combat really lacks on harder difficulties.
Halo Reach
-Elites back to former glory but overall it was too easy to just run through the campaign with plasma pistol and DMR. Legendary felt very cheap at times.
ODST
-Uninteresting environments with bad encounters. Only thing that it had going for itself was the fact that being an ODST made it (only slightly) more challenging. This forced you to use a bit more stealth every now and then.
Halo 2
Jackal Snipers, bulletsponge Brutes and annoying Drones.

Campaign (story)
Halo 2
-The entire Covenant side of the story was really interesting and added a lot to the universe. Character development was also superior to other Halo games.
Halo 1
-Simple, yet effective. Forerunner mysteries and all.
ODST
-Fairly interesting characters and I think the story about Buck and Bigjaw was told pretty well.
Halo 3
-Boring and paled in comparison with Halo 2.
Halo Reach
-Non-existing storyline.

Multiplayer
Halo 2
-Good maps, good gametypes, and best playlist management in any Halo game (like that says anything).
Halo 3
-A weak and slower version of Halo 2. Weird gametypes played on bad maps. Most equipment pieces were dumb as hell.
Halo Reach
-This.

Gameplaywise, campaign goes H1 > H:R > ODST= H3 > H2 for me.

Storywise, they pretty much go in order from H1 onward.

Half of the times I look up these Halo threads, everybody is ranking the Halo games. Hopefully the end of February will bring something new to the discussion table.

I agree with this list mostly, but I'd put Halo 1 above Halo 2 in story, and Halo Reach at the bottom for gameplay.

Halo 3 was the pinnacle.

Halo 3 was the absolute pinnacle for me also, not just in terms of the actual gameplay. For me, as a gamer my whole life, nothing compares to the memories, moments, friends, and fun I had with Halo 3. 2009 for me was the best year for Halo 3. It's when everyone was playing, all the playlists were packed with people to play with, and I actually like the br and the way the game works.

Reach is just meh. The no bloom is a nice touch, but it's a little too late for me imo. I mean, I got to rank hero, but I played it just because it was Halo. If it wasn't Halo, I would have played it for a month and sold it.

I'm sorry, but your post has no ranking in it. Please edit it to rank something arbitrary so you don't upset anyone.

Halo 4 set for reveal this month, claims mag
Finnish publication points to Xbox Spring Showcase

A Finnish magazine's claiming Halo 4 will finally be unveiled at an Xbox Spring Showcase event on February 29.

The 343-developed sequel hasn't been seen since its E3 reveal last year, and we're still none the wiser as far as actual gameplay details are concerned.

The game's described as "the dawn of a new trilogy" and its developers have claimed they're taking it "back to what made Halo 3 amazing".

You have less than a month to find out if the Finnish tipsters are on the money.
Hopefully very true
and hopefully not old
