There's an easier way to do this: just grab a Brute Shot. Drops ranged forms in one shot, kills tank forms in one melee hit.
 
A new Halo trilogy? Yes please. Just give me more Forerunner stuff. For me none of the Halo sequels quite matched the original's sense of scale and ancient mystery, even though the set pieces got a lot bigger and more elaborate. (Halo 2 came close with the levels on Delta Halo, as did Halo 3 with The Ark and The Covenant) I would love to see some of Greg Bear's imagery from Cryptum fully realized in a big-budget Halo title. Dare I hope for a Precursor city?
 
I hate to admit it but I am actually pretty excited about this. I do most of my gaming on PS3 these days but I loved the first 3 Halos and Master Chief gets me excited to play again. Is there a date for it coming out yet?

But I'm definitely looking forward to Halo 4. The CG movie looked kinda bland and cheap though, specially the end :/

Halo 3 ranking system got abused and was inherently flawed. Since it used trueskill, and Halo 2's used ELO, I doubt we get the Halo 2 system back. It's a shame since it was far better. But if they do use a 1-50, they can't have ranks lock, they can't have a million playlists (keep the basics), and use a cR system separately. I much prefer the cR system over EXP and ranks give more players a reason to often go for an objective point/marker, such as they did in Team Skirmish/Team Objective. With Bungie's off-balanced Commendations devaluing things like flag caps and whatnot, it hurts flag and bomb games. Players just want to pad their K/D and kills.
 
As long as the BR makes a return and bloom is gone, then I'll be happy.

The ranking system needs to be changed as well back to levels, the Halo 3 system was total bullshit though. The only problem with bringing it back is you get the try hards cunts that cheat to win.

MLG on Halo 3 is so more satisfying than Reach as well.

Don't lock ranks, substantiate certain playlists so the playlists are healthy enough there won't be such a high disparity among ranks.

For instance, make stuff like FFA, Team Slayer, Team Skirmish, BTB, MLG, and 6v6 ranked. Then the rest can be unranked and only be used to acquire cR. Some ideas to throw out.

The game that makes you save and buy it day 1 whether you can afford it or not. Get the install base building fast. Just look at what Halo 1 did as a launch title for the Xbox.

Man I'm on Neil Davidge's website listening to some of the "Additional" recordings for commercials and stuff, and I could see this guy doing great justice to the Halo universe... just imagine walking around an abandoned forerunner installation to these tunes. It fits.

Not sure what all the Halo 3 hate is about, or why it is relevant to this thread, but in my opinion it had the best campaign aside from Halo: CE. The story was nowhere near the first two games, but at least it was fun instead of busted like Halo 2. I didn't like the last two levels of Halo 3 though. Mugh! ODST had a retarded story about rescuing a bug, but good atmosphere and excellent score coupled with Halo 3's gameplay, and Reach just felt... I dunno, wasn't my thing. Hardly felt like a Halo game, it was so washed out and devoid of interesting characters, arks, environments.... the fact that I knew everything that was gonna happen before it happened probably didn't help.

Halo CE > Halo 3 > Halo 2 > Halo ODST > Halo Reach
 
I have to say the HBO interview and the youtube interviews are really the most informative ones right now. I hope that Halo 4 is going to be colorful like Halo: CE or Halo 3.

I don't understand how anyone could think this. The annoying ass crawfish-looking, spike shooting flood were so annoying. The spaces were so tight. The only argument I'll give anyone is that the library's aesthetic was repetitive, but it's still fun.

Also fighting the flood in Halo CE was better than any other incarnation.

This. Exactly this.

Because the gameplay in Halo 2 was pretty much busted, my favorite levels tend to be the ones that are most interesting to look at and explore, and that includes all of the forerunner levels, the gas giant mining facility, delta halo as the chief, and the sentinel wall/quarantine zone/and control room as the arbiter. I wanted to explore every inch of those areas just like I did almost every inch of Halo 1 and the 2 ark levels of Halo 3. I never even wanted to look around the corner in ODST and even less so in Reach, just completely uninterested in the environments.

I agree. 343 definitely has a great presence on NeoGAF. Frank and company have been posting like crazy over the past week, answering a ton of questions. I love it when the developers read the forums.

Haven't heard a lot out of any Bungie folk on GAF lately, aside from Urk. I hope that's just because they're hard at work on secret things and don't have much they can talk about. I'm just glad Urk still pops in regularly to bring the lulz.
 
New Halo trilogy might run to Xbox 720
Announcing Halo 4 at E3 last week, Microsoft called the fourth game in the series "the dawn of a new trilogy for Xbox 360", but that won't necessarily be the case.

Halo 4 is definitely coming to Xbox 360 in 2012, but asked whether the whole trilogy will launch on Microsoft's current console, MS Games Studios VP Phil Spencer told IGN: "No announcement on that yet."

He added of the Halo 4 game engine: "We started with the code base from Halo, so it's not something we had to re-roll from the beginning... The technology base isn't 100 percent new, but a ton of work has gone into it by [developer] 343."

Spencer also told the site that Microsoft's talked about making a Halo 2 HD remake, and that it's not the company's intention to annualise the franchise.

"Obviously Halo 2 is one that we've talked about," he said. "I wouldn't say this is a strategy for us to go back and remake Xbox 1 games. This was the 10th Anniversary of Halo so it made sense.

"People shouldn't look at Anniversary as part of an annualised franchise. I love the fact we're doing the Anniversary edition because I loved Halo 1. We just looked at it and thought it needed to be refreshed. It wasn't part of us trying to get into an annualised rhythm with the franchise. It will be done in time for this holiday that is the 10th Anniversary for Halo. It felt like a good time to celebrate it."

You know that's him misspeaking. It's clear when you read the full quote. However I do think we'll see a Halo 2 Anniversary. It's just a feeling I have.

I do agree that the ranged form encounters were annoying in Cortana. To me they were the one flaw in that level. I otherwise loved it. It was a real challenge with the number of flood thrown at you. Also just to be back in the remains of a floodified High Charity was cool as hell. To fix the level you don't even necessarily need a sniper to fix it. Just a Battle Rifle or Carbine with plenty of ammo.

I'd love to see that, although Halo 2 would need considerable changes made to the single player during the remake.

And put Halo 3's sword in multiplayer. :)

I'm not saying it's bad. I've bought all of them, and I plan to do the same with every future Halo provided 343i's next games are not complete turds. I just think yearly installments are not a very good idea if they want to prevent franchise fatigue. A two-year cycle makes much more sense with, possibly, a new Gears of War released every other year.

Whilst I understand your point, a huge draw of the Halo games and the most important one at that for me and my friends is the multiplayer. In that regard the series is hardly fatigued at all, with Halo 3 and Reach being the two this generation and released three years apart. Now if you consider that Reach was a huge departure from the traditional games in the gameplay department which caused many to be soured by it, Halo 4 will be the first true multiplayer sequel since Halo 3 back in 2007. I still play Halo 3 as do many of my friends and the thirst for a mainline sequel with the core Halo gameplay intact is possibly greater now than it ever has been in our eyes, so to that extent Halo 4 is much needed.

It's truly a shame Bungie never got tot he "X-box Live 3.0/Tsunami" creation upgrade aspect. :( Only Pharah and Far Cry: I/E and 2 on the 360 did it. :(

In general, I agree. But I will still buy every one that comes out.

At least they aren't COD'ing it up with little to zero innovation year after year. I mean hell, there was a Halo RTS, an open-world non-linear campaign, and twice now they've not segregated the multiplayer by having add-on packs for the last title.

True enough, I just think it'd be an interesting exercise to juggle between Sniper Rifle and backup between Ranged forms and Combat forms, or using the SR for both long and short range and having to adapt on the fly to a really "busy" battlefield (such as a tunnel packed to the gills with flood, and having to make the most of your shots).
 
Did a search around Gaf and didn't see this posted. Amazon has this as the Halo 4 box art. Also saw this on a couple of blogs that weren't very credible too though.

If the next console is out by 2014, instead of doing a Halo 2 Anniversary they should just do a Halo anthology disc with the first 5 games on it, as I don't think it would be worth the effort to do Halo 3/ODST/Reach anniversary games. The Halo games on the 360 only have small technical issues that could be resolved with a more powerful system + 1080p w/4xAA without touching any of the assets.

also I'm probably alone in this but I really like the new Microsoft Studios logo, the "X" design was feeling very old

The artwork must be official, but I doubt they have settled on the cover this early.
 
The chief's armor looks funky - very bulky. And whats with the doodad on his pistol? Looks like a homemade silencer made out of a two-liter bottle.

I'm game though. Halo needed a breath of fresh air, and I'm damn curious to see how far down this particular rabbit hole goes. New civilizations? Forerunner secrets? Evolved flood forms?

As long as the game appreciates the idea of sandbox play against devious and varied AI I think it can deserve the Halo monicker. It'd be nice to see 343 take up the mantle to fix up some of where Bungie was weakest with the series and offer us up an engaging story that comes as close as possible to evoking the feelings in the Halo ad campaigns.

And make double damn sure that nobody in the game calls out "Oscar Mike" at any point.
