Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn - Part 4 [Available To Watch]

My daughter is mad that I wont let her watch this episode. She's 7 and the end is kind of intense. Am I being over-protective? She's not literally mad, just disappointed since she watched the first 2 and liked them. This might be time for one of those "Dont tell mom" scenarios.

I absolutely loved how the kids reacted to the big thing (Spartan) on the classified video and then the ODSTs. We take them for granted because we get to play as and interact with them all the time, but scenes like these from the eyes of other people in the fiction really show how important and badass they are.
Yep odst's are badass. All of the sound cues from when they arrive, including when the covies destroy the elevator, are freaking awesome.

I'm onboard with the series now. Fun stuff. The cortana bits are well done. And those bodies at the end.

My favorite bit had to be Lasky listening to his mothers condolences. The shot with her eyes was nice (She was in Battlestar right? Commander of the Pegasus I think).

If your 7 year old can handle the games I think she can handle the concept of people falling out of the sky (also she will probably miss it and think its rubble like A LOT of people here did)

EDIT: Though just so mom doesn't find out I wouldn't do it lol

Pretty sure she was head of security on the Galactica. Brought a trial against Adama.

Yep. Jill Teed, played Sgt. Hadrian on Galactica.

Thats her, right?

yeah.... i dunno. strange creature with glowing sword thing in the dark sounds ike a recipe for 7 year old nightmare to me

She plays Minecraft and 99 cent games on her iPod Touch. She's liked this series of shows, though. I'm not worried about the falling bodies since I dont think she'll even notice them. Thinking simply about the intensity of the final scenes. I'll probably let her watch it and if it bothers her I'll just avoid that type of stuff in the near future.

Yeah. She sees those guys when she watches me play Reach, but it's not presented quite as horrifically as it is in the show.

Yeah not so sure about letting her watch it then, but hopefully she says "Awesome!" instead of getting scared lol

I just hope her rampancy isn't magically cured ala HALO 3. It was like she was just lonely and became perfectly fine once Chief showed up. Talk about clingy.

agreed. and why i'm hoping beyond reason that gravemind has left some sort of influence on her that will come to pass at some point in the new trilogy, even if its indirect and comes from cortana rather then gravemind.... would be pretty awesome if cortana is able to "survive" rampancy and death from something she learned while being captive by the "timeless one".

I'd like Cortana to become the villain. Or a companion to the main threat in some fashion. Giant bomb talked about that a few weeks back and I thought it was neat. Could make for a dark middle chapter.

Just catching up on these, fucking awesome stuff here.

So up until now the cadets/humans had no idea bout the Covenant?

cadets didnt. humans did, but it was early on and still top secret (see classified video from this episode with unsc fighting alongside insurrectionists against unknown enemy)

Yeah, Cortana going rampant seems to be a perfect story to explore.. It honestly seems terrifying how far along she is already. I do hope they don't cop out with it, it has too much potential.

When you get a chance, watch some of the other earlier scenes with General Black. There are hnts that something isn't right.

The scene where he was assigning marines to different locations while looking up in the air was simple but great.

Will we find out how far this is into the war, and if they (ONI and UNSC command) suspected Covenant were around there area? I mean this is obviously after Harvest, but by how long and what prompted the beefed security? And at that, what do the Covenant want? They just would have glassed from above if they didn't want something.

Think about who is on that planet and what their strategic value is in a war you know will be very long.

I definitely liked this episode much more than the last two. The first one was kinda alright... the second one was better, but this one was great :)

I think it's because 15 mins is just a poor way to break up a story. If you rolled the first 3 episodes up, you'd have a normal 45 min TV episode and people wouldn't complain about the pacing.

Agreed! The cadets reaction to seeing a spartan for the first time and the covvies taking out the elevator were the high points .

Well, we watched it and she had no idea those were people falling from the sky. So that's good. She wasn't bothered by anything other than not liking the girl who "cheated" and cut her way onto an escape ship. When it blew up she smiled. I think I might be raising a devil child. Or an ethics major. Either way...ewwwwwww!

loving the build up over the past 3 episodes now. Really sucks having to wait a week now, especially knowing that shit will hit the fan in the next episode. Great stuff all around though.

Finally it gets INTERESTING!

Also loved the shot of the ODST's jumping in and the cadets realise something very bad is happening.

My gut wants to say John, but that can't possible be it. Surely it would be too early in the war for any spartan action to have been taken yet.

what is Halo's advertising budget? I've never seen any other company support an video game IP like this.

I was actually wondering that also. How much has Microsoft given 343 to work with? Forbes reported that they spent 10mill on Forward Unto Dawn, but how about the rest.

these kids are going to be future UNSC military leaders. They'll be commanding troops against the Covenant eventually. You really don't want the next wave of admirals/generals/etc. killed early in the war.

That's an even better point. Although capturing them would give them an advantage over the humans, I don't think that is the Covenant's style. At least not something the Elites would do.

If you guys had to chose a halo game that best captured this atmosphere, which halo would it be?

halo CE?

ODST. Much more of a group scenario. No Spartans either. Just humans up against incredible odds.

Albeit, I don't think any of the games are really similar to FUD but ODST comes the closest if I had to choose one.

Yea but no elites in ODST :(

Other wise it would of been the best halo ever. brutes are boring as hell to fight. and looking incredibly stupid doesnt help.

Yeah, that is the only downside. Reach would be next as it captures the sudden invasion scenario experienced in FUD but beyond that it's not really comparable IMO.

Yea true that.

I think if halo ditched the humour and went for a more serious oppresive tone like it did in this series, it would be incredible.

and again in reach, once I reached the brutes i ejected reach and was never to be played again.

i hope there are no brutes in halo 4.

Very very very unlikely

The covenant on requiem are led by fanatical elites. Elites are the top race in the covenant now.

Well, they must want some piece of physical intel, or someone alive. If they wanted em dead they would just glass the planet. So yeah, I take it they want the kids for bargaining chips or they want some of the leaders down there.

glassing a planet takes a really long time and is ultimately symbolic rather than merely practical. In fact it's done sort of surgically after other crap has been taken care of first. I am not even really talking about the plot here, just a bit of canon that speaks to why you'd want boots on the ground, period, a-la Reach.

I mean, that makes sense, but if you were merely going for destruction wouldn't it be easiest to bombard with airstrikes and then bring the foot soldiers in? But yeah, I do get that even if it were about full destruction that ground troops would be deployed- still, Im guessing there is more to this than just destroying another human planet. Which I suppose you hinted at earlier anyways.

Alright, this episode was great. I thought I'd be turned off by the costumes but the characters and atmosphere have more than made up for it.
