Though ships may not have as much difficulty escaping the gravity of a planet in the future, think about everything we've done in space travel up until now: the majority of the design of every vehicle is dedicated to fuel and thrust power for lifting against high gravity.
With an elevator like that, ships can be constructed in space and used only in space.

Really starting to enjoy this now. Each episode has improved, and it makes me wonder if the episodic approach was the best way to go. Im sure some folks just turned away after the first episode. Being a die hard Halo fan I continue to watch. Best part of episode three was the ODST drops, and the reaction the squad had realizing things were about to hit the fan.
Also need more Fred, or at least some live action of him shoving his knife into the skull of an elite

I can honestly say, this was the first worthwhile episode. All that teen drama kitsch that was Episode 1 and 2 could've been cut down to one episode. Actually both 1 and 2 felt like needless filler. This actually had something happening and the actors actually acting interestingly (aside from that hacker kid) If Episode 4 isn't just about all out shooting and masturbating over MC arriving on the scene then I'm very much looking forward to it.

I think the problem with everyone disliking the first episode or two is that this is structured more like a movie...
When you watch a movie, it takes a while before you get acclimated to the setting, characters, camera work, etc.
Every-time I watch a new movie, the first 20min or more I am not yet comfortable with the "feel" of the movie.
I think this is the same, although we had to wait a week or two in between before we were able to acclimate to those first few minutes. I think this will be great to watch as an entire feature, instead of piece by piece. Though the piece by piece thing is fun at this point.

I agree, but I do think some shots leave a little to be desired. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the warthog reveal was a bit lackluster. Same with the
ODSTs dropping in
the destruction of the space elevator. I really would have loved to get a long shot of it as it gets pulled up to orbit while falling apart.

The Hollywood movie was almost ago but then got canned. Blomkamp got pissed, swore off ever doing a Halo movie, and made District 9.
This is completely separate and is just marketing for Halo 4 and the Halo Brand in general.
Though I am sure they are still fishing for a big Hollywood production still.

if everything is in place (great director, good casting, solid script, ilm for the vfx) they really should make a movie. but i wouldnt complain about a mini series ala band of brothers.
if you look at the quality of the halo spots and marketing (fud), i cant wait what they have in store for halo 5.

A Halo mini-series in the vein of the I Love Bees ARG (i.e. Multiple character's POVs, ONI stuff, etc) would be heaven for me. I love the books and wouldn't mind seeing some Spartan action, but the universe is pretty rich so that Spartan vs Covenant firefights can take second place to the other stuff and I wouldn't be mad.

Same. I'm preferring TV shows to movies nowadays given that they provide more character and depth. And given the budgets a proper Halo series would require, I'd prefer the Band of Brothers model.
I still think the Fall of Reach would make an awesome summer blockbuster though.

EDIT: Also, so as not to derail the conversation, I think Halo should just do miniseries, because it allows more story freedom, they can do more with their budget (fewer episodes to stretch it across), and they don't really have to worry about ratings and network suits messing with the product.

Yes, but they have to be stronger as well, right? Otherwise, why not just make more ODSTs?
I was just referring to how they are recruited from within the best of the marines; they go through an augmentation process but not as severe as what SIIs went through in completely modifying their bodies.

I totally wrote these things off before even watching episode 1, but I had some time to kill tonight.
HOLY SHIT. Blew away my expectations. Just watched all 3 back to back.
Heart was pounding at the end of episode 3. These guys are doing some amazing story telling on a limited budget.

I'm referring more to their specific augmentations. I already know they're being recruited from ODSTs/marines. The Spartan 2's are all like 7ft tall while the spartan 3's are normal sized iirc. Just wondering what they would be like in regards to specific augmentations.
I thought the S3 augmentations were designed for kids? So they could develop into their new bodies.

The S3 program was scaled back in terms of augmentation in comparison to S2, and over the course of the war, developed advancements in the augmentation process that increased the genetic range of people who could be augmented and reduced washouts. By the looks of it, at the end of the war the augmentation process now safe for adults to go through.

I've had a hard time getting into the lore based off the games. The various Halo wiki's have been helpful. Which book would you guys recommend if I'm mostly interested in the "everyday life of a Spartan"? I'm not that interested in reading about Forerunners and such, but I do find the Spartan program to be pretty interesting.

I'm going to recommend reading The Fall of Reach. It's the first and best Halo book, and it details the full extent of the Spartan II program and many of the people who went through it.
The story also includes the battle at Reach, and many parts of the book have been retconned by Halo Reach, so expect that too.

This. Fall of Reach seems to be exactly what Kitschkraft is asking for. Its John's history and the history of the Spartan program (Halsey, Cortana, Keyes, and others) in the pre Covenant days. Covers everything of note up to the very moment that Halo: Combat Evolved begins.
And +1 to this. That lady is a stunner, and I could listen to her talk all day.
