Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn - Part 4 [Available To Watch]

Am I the only one you thought the latest episode was lame? Wasn't enjoying this series until episode 3, which I thought was good, now I'm back to feeling indifferent.

I can't figure out why though, I'm just not feeling it.

The newest episode was far from lame, but it wasn't as good as episode 3.

Ep 3 left us with a chill of whats to come. Then Ep 4 was the payoff and in a lot of cases it didn't live up to our very high expectations.

I really like this series but I have to come to grips with why I don't LOVE them. I think it comes down to a few things, but the thing thats most paramount is the fact that I have so much love for this franchise that it makes it that much more difficult to put something like this together that satisfies me. When you go into watching a TV Show you have little to no expectations. But when you go into watching a series about a franchise that you've poured tons of hours into (playing games, reading books, etc.) then the bar is set that much higher. Higher than I think is even achievable.

Having said that, I really enjoy this series. I feel like it is slow in some places that it doesn't need to be for just a 5 part series, but I like it much better than anything Blomkampt showed us.

He should have just said "Call me, [Dramatic pause] Chief [Cue silent chanting monks]". Done.

I know you're joking but if he had just said call me chief with no pause I'd have no problem at all with that line. I think more then anything it's the dramatic pause that makes that line so awful. I also agree the cleanliness of the suit is also another thing that bugs me about MC in that episode. Course all that said I do like the series so far. Even the very slow first 2 episodes weren't bad at all.

I'm exactly the same. 1-2 was boring me to tears, 3 was amazing, and 4 was... yeah it's just there.

To me personally episode 3 so far was the only episode with an actual progression of events while ep.1 and 2 were dragged out set ups that should've been edited to 1 more interesting episode.
Ep. 4 was as I feared: A boring self felating showcase of Master Chief. Nothing happened. The script could be: People die, Master Chief comes and poses for the camera in awkward slow motion sequences. The deaths were boring, inconsequential and simply not impactfull. Even that poor asian kid died and I just thought: Yeah, should've improved his combat scores^^

The quality of writing and pacing in this mini series is mostly miss, with Episode 3 being the lone highlight (mainly because it actually featured the only real interesting story, character and event developments)

Ah well, it's just a promotion series, so I guess we shouldn't be too harsh on it. Unless they wanted to achieve TV quality with this, it's just 5 20 minutes advertisements, and for that, they are rather good.

I agree he should have been a bit more authoritative with the recruits, but he can't state his rank and designation because he technically doesn't even exist and isn't part of the military at this point in time.

Ah good point, I forgot Spartans were only declassified later to boost morale.

To which the kids respond "...what the hell is a Spartan?"

At least with an informal rank, they can address him without knowing too much. Like addressing Sergeant Johnson as just "Sergeant"

I have no complaints about the name, just the delivery.

Yeah, I dunno about saying he's Spartan 117 since thats probably classified, but I really don't think the line "call me Master Chief" alone can be anything but cheesy.

It just should have went something like this:

"Who and what are you?"

"Irrelevant and classified, just call me Master Chief."

or

"Call me by rank; Master Chief"

----

But the real question is was he even a Master Chief at that age..?

Damn "Call me Masterchief" was so cheesey. He just should have said "Iam Spartan one one seven"

I think that would've been too robotic and out of character. Chief has never been this Robocop type of cyborg, his reactions were always on the human side. He knows that they don't know what Spartans are - and they shouldn't know, the whole program is a military secret.

Well they are already looking at the military secret. Giving them a name probably wouldn't make it much worse. And when you want it to be more human then why not let him say: "I'm John"?

"Call me by rank; Master Chief"
I like this one the most

Naw, I feel the same way. I've reset my expectations from "awesome" to "web series based on a video game" for episode five.

Hey, hey guys, you're all saying different things, which means theres likely to be equally as many people that are just fine with the way they introduced the Master Chief, shocking I know

You're all terrible.

It should have been:

'Who are you?'
*Explosion goes off up ahead*
*Chief raises his hand, looking toward the sound, turns back*
'Form up on me. Radio silence from here on out. Move.'

"What the fuck are you..."

"I'm your best hope for survival"

amirite??? Hehee

Fixed. I would've preferred it like this. By implying he's something else adds to the mystery, those cadets will probably learn who or what he is when they're somewhere safe.

hm. true. I also think he himself doesn't know what he really is. He knows it has something to do with being a soldier and that's all.

The writing for Chief was pretty bad all around, though. It's like they didn't get the character.

Might as well have been

'Who are you?'
'My name is Master Chief. I was but a boy when people still called me John. Except Dr. Halsey. She still does. But then she kidnapped me along with a bunch of other children and indoctrinated us into a series of war games and psychological tests that you just KNOW were cooked up by some fan of Ender's Game. This program would later become known as the Sparan program, but that's classified. In fact I probably should have t- ..oh you're all dead now anyway, that's good.'

what he is... is classified.
his name? considering they stole him is likely classified.
his rank is the only suitable response. he is the rank of master chief.

just because some squirt of a kid asks who he is doesn't mean it's ok to spill military secrets. Remember these guys came from ONI, not from UNSC.

call me master chief is the proper response... outside of ignoring him

Someone earlier in the thread said something about the Reach Spartans having their own internal ranks. John had the rank of Master Chief amongst the Spartans and supposedly was made a real MC upon disclosure of the program

Ok, that makes a little more sense.. Not sure why he would have the cadets identify him with that rank though.

I assume it was because the MC stuff was pretty cheesey? I think the episode took a dip after he showed up but was still enjoyable.

Yeah, well then the kids won't realize he is Master Chief!!1!

It should have been handled in a better, more subtle way, thats for sure. Maybe we should have just heard Kelly over radio chatter call him Master Chief.

I don't think a wide-reaching series like this calls for a subtle intro... elegant, sure, but not subtle. It features an iconic character afterall, his name needs to be delivered with a sense of authority. Maybe at the end when they get back to base, a senior officer approaches him and says "Job well done, Master Chief"... or "It's only gonna get more fucked up from hereon Master Chief" something like that lol

I wonder if it just sounds so weird because Master Chief is so branded on him now. Probably sounds less weird if you are not familar with the series and know Naval ranks?

Erm, it's precisely because it's a wide-reaching series that saying 'I'M MASTER CHIEF' is completely unnecessary.

Nah.. his name goes hand in hand with his appearance, deserves a mention imho. Him introducing himself however, I find unnecessary. Someone else needs to do it

Pops said Chief should have said: "Call me, John".

*Nodding at my pops*

Agreed. It's just too on-the-nose. You wouldn't think a guy like that would refer to himself that way. Master Chief is 'just' his rank, right? It just comes across as "Call me Mr. Awesome". Sure, dude.

With a subtler introduction, you still would've been guessing if it's THE Master Chief - could've made for a more dramatic moment when you get the actual confirmation that it was indeed THE Master Chief who saved them and would have felt a little less prick'ish.

That would have been equally as bad.

Maybe he could have said "They call me Master Chief" or just John-117.

Guess there's no good way around this....

"They call me Master Chief" That wouldn't work either as it is just his rank and John 117 is just too much because the Cadets do not need to know the 117. In this situation (military) the cadets would only need to know his rank.

of course it's gonna be cheesy, it's freaking aliens with purple lasers and super soldiers and shit. i didn't mind the line.

Okay it got kinda good once the invasion started.
Then let down again when Master Chief was introduced. Why did they change the voice actor?

The way you get around it is by having the cadets react in a fucking sane manner when confronted by one of humanities greatest accomplishments.

'That suit...I saw you in footage helping the innies. God even without it you must be huge. What are you?'

'We are the second generation of humanities best, they call us Spartans, you can call me chief.'

I thought it was a good ep, but as a halo nerd I kinda of wish they didn't have the Chief as the guy who saves them. I suppose it ties into why Lasky knows him in Halo 4 (only guessing from the first episode where it shows adult Lasky commanding the Infinity). It could have been one of the other Spartans, and if they wanted to throw in the 117 reference they could have had MC on the radio reporting they had secured some survivors. Then you don't even have to worry about the delivery of "I'm the Master Chief" lines ;)
