Halo 4 - mandatory 8GB install for MP

Yeah..NO

If I was even going to buy this game because the MP looks barely passable and the campaign doesn't look THAT interesting to me yet I am certainly not planning on spending more on extra stuff just to play it.

I'll already have to cough up 20 euro's for a 4 month goldcard and then buy another usb drive just so I can play it?

Nah screw this.

See, you were never even going to buy the game in the first place. :)

This could be a potential problem for unsuspecting customers, but anyone here unable to handle this as if it's a deal breaker is a ridiculous person. Getting all indignant over having to buy super cheap storage.

That said, 343/MS should include a damn 8gb usb drive on every LE at the very least.

I'm not from the US and I never order online..

Cheapest one near me is 16 euro's.

Deleting Prince of Persia leaves me with 4.5gb extra room. With RB disc install which I can't delete cause I don't have it anymore and other DLC which I don't wanna go through the trouble of redownloading everything.. 13gb just sucks period. Cause it's not even 20gb.

I think it also has to do with the principle of the thing. You buy a console, you expect to be able to play games without jumping through a million goddamn hoops.

"A million goddamn hoops"? Amazon.com has a fucking 1-click checkout.

it is more work for you to walk to the store to buy Halo4 itself. i mean, get off the couch FFS.

I'm sure GameStop will jump at the chance to remind people.

I can't remember any system that can play every game released out of the box.

i mean, think of any device you bought in or around 2005....how many are even relevant? The fact that the 360 is as good as it is flaws and all is nearly miraculous in the world of 2-year product cycles. an iPad from 2010 is nearly ancient.

Interesting. The Halo series has had an odd relationship with installs this generation:

Halo 3: Inferior performance when manually installed to the HDD, due to a conflict with the caching algorithm Bungie worked in before optional installs.
Reach: Improved performance, but optional as usual.
Halo 4: Mandatory.

That should streamline the whole Matchmaking process and make sure everyone in a party loads at the same time. Having it mandatory shouldn't be an issue nowadays either - 8-16GB USB sticks can be had for under £10 or so.

Yeah. I doubt this will honestly affect more than a couple of thousand of people but I still feel that there should be something in place for those people. If they said something like "we'll sell you an 8Gb thumb stick and include a code for the first map pack for a tenner".
Yeah that would have been nice.

Oh, agreed. But how many people are going to be in that situation? If you have a 4GB Xbox you don't have much of an excuse. Those 20GB systems are less and less, but these are the folks that have the most legitimate concerns. If you are into gaming, and into Halo I don't see an issue grabbing a $5-$10 stick when you go grab your game though.

The game goes from $65(w//tax) to 70-75 just so I could play mp. I dont want to buy anything else in order to play.

Someone brought up bf3 before. Yes, that sucked, but it was 2 GB(although I think its 4GB now). This is 8. I would have 4(!) Gbs left afterwards.

Ehh yeah probably not although I'm a Halo fan.

I might have bought it if it DIDNT require me to spend extra money.

I always buy my games in stores, the fact that I have to spend extra money just to play the MP seems ridiculous to me. I also do not have a couch!

And yes these are extra hoops. I need to go out or order a usb stick online which costs me extra money, then I have to format it to use on 360, then I have to install the MP disc, and probably download a patch after that.

Yeah there are no extra hoops at all O_o.

I see a lot of people here do not own a PS3, where installs like this are the norm. Or how about on PC? If you only bought a 4GB 360 or even a still have an old 20GB then running out of room was inevitable.

Has someone ever had to buy a flash drive to play a PS3 game?

Yeah things aren't much better on the PS3. I hit a wall last week where my 40 GB PS3 was FULL even though I only had like 5 games on it. Even after deleting everything I possibly could I still couldn't download the game I wanted.

Hopefully next gen we will get enough space on the hard drive right off the bat so we don't have to keep upgrading just to keep buying and playing games.

Which game feature is over 20GB?

The first party DC Universe can't run on a 20 gig. You need a 40gig minimum.

I don't think the issue is that there's an 8GB install (which is big, but still). The issue is that Microsoft sold an Xbox that can't play this Xbox game, which kind of blurs the line between console and PC.

Can you name a previous system this gen or last that can play all games released from launch without anything extra?

LOL, I have not checked. But installs going to up 8GB have been the norm for years now. Most people have either upgraded their HDD or have bought a model with more room.

I honestly don't think it's that big of a deal, since the people who are going to be playing Halo 4 online need Gold, probably already have a larger HDD, probably have a headset, probably wouldn't think twice about buying a memory stick, etc. I still don't really like it in principal though. Especially because it's probably going to be hidden somewhere in a corner on the back of the box.

Good, everyone will load the maps quicker and they can probably perform extra optimisations knowing that the maps will be on the hard drive.

I personally have a launch 20GB hard drive that is full, but making this mandatory install does not bother me one bit. I will find room, or plug in a USB thumb drive.

I'm pretty baffled at the response to this. If I had a small HD I'd be disappointed, but I also wouldn't expect the industry to cater to me only having 4GB or even 20GB of storage. Welcome to the future.

20gb is a launch model... Is it wrong to expect to play a new game on a launch model?

You can play Halo 4 multiplayer just fine on the launch 20GB. The fact that you filled it up with other stuff is not MS' problem really. Also, that was 7 years ago, they've introduced bigger drives and systems for that reason.

Nintendo would never pull something like this.
*inserts Skyward Sword disc*
You mean I gotta spend $20 on a goddamn motion plus to even play this game!?

For a mom buying the game for her kid? No. For someone who reads GAF? Yes.

Yep.

And that 20GB HDD has enough room if you delete some files. Hell, it's a 7 year old system/HDD, plenty of stuff had to have been deleted over the years. Make room.

you sound incredibly lazy, and you need to be called out for it. the things you are describing are cheap and easy solutions that require little work and even less brainpower. i mean, you make it sound like getting out of bed in the AM and booting up your computer and typing "neogaf.com" into a browser is about all just about all you can do in a day.

i don't know what to tell you.

Yeah they've introduced bigger drives, that cost like a fucking 80 euro's for a 60gb hdd or something. Fuck that noise.

And yeah let's just buy a new system cause my 20gb is not enough for me.

Lol, I'm not lazy. I don't want to go through the extra bullshit like buying a new USB drive just for playing multiplayer. The entire idea sounds ridiculous to me. Also why do you feel the need to call out that I'm lazy?

You sound incredibly condescending. I think it's more of an issue of principal than anything. Sure it's pretty cheap, and sure it's not hard to go to the store- but along those same lines, it's not hard for you to send him $10 so he can get it for free.

Because you're whining about something that's trivial. Seriously.

Yeah, the prices on MS' HD's are a bit much, but your second statement is one you face on any piece of hardware. You get a 250GB PC hard drive and fill it up you go buy more room, you don't sit there expecting people that make programs to stop making you install them. Same with PS3, and with the Wii you're just screwed. It's also the same with phones and portable gaming devices.

20GB harddrive am cry

No surprise, early adopters get fucked in the ass every single time.

If you're an early adopter I would have assumed you to have a new 360 slim by now. Also, it's been 7 years. Like I mentioned, 8GB fits on the 20GB HD.

Ive had to upgrade my HDD a few times, but people have been selling cheaper HDDs on eBay for years.

I'd also rank paying for Live more of a hassle than buying a USB stick. I have like 10 of those sitting in a drawer right now. If you were in the US, I'd mail some to your front door for free.
