Halo 5 Review Thread

Looks like Gamespot is giving the game an 8/10, although the reviewer stated he thinks the multiplayer is the best it has ever been.

Edit: And he just said he loved the gameplay of the campaign. The AI and story seem to be the things he dinged the score for.

IGN has updated that they had no problems with the MP, and that they'll release the final score soon.

I'm probably around halfway through mission 2 and I already feel a lot of relief. This is very good so far. Already such an improvement over Halo 4, and I already care more about what's happening. I don't want to get my hopes up too much yet, but I really really like this so far.

I gotta say. This is the worst looking halo game I've ever seen. Texture, water, distances visibility, distances movement, shadows. It's really disappointed and heart breaking.

That
Glassed
mission looks really bad. Unbelievably bad for a current gen title.

I'm nearing the end of the game and I'm flabbergasted by the lack of mission starring Master Chief.

Sounds good.

Metacritic of about 85 is a great score for a First person shooter. When was the last time a FPS got a Meta of 90+ ? Looking in my crystal ball i doubt their will be a FPS in the next 5 years other than Half Life 3 that gets a Metacritic of 90 or over, if it ever came out :)

Bioshock Infinite came out in 2013 and is sitting on 94.

Gamespot MC quote.

In some ways, Halo 5 is the boldest Halo yet. The franchise's multiplayer is at its peak, with a mode I'm sure I'll return to several times over. But then there's the campaign, which introduces fluid new movement and open level design, yet can't tell a coherent story to match. There are signs of a phenomenal shooter here, but certain narrative aspects feel underdeveloped, holding the franchise's newest sequel back from true excellence

I agree with a lot of the reviews on the disjointed story. The actual encounters and level design though are really great and a huge step above Halo 4, even if the pacing isn't where it should be.

Multiplayer might be the best in the series since 2. It's really fucking good so far. When I lose I'm not blaming bullshit because it feels fair, and when I win I feel like I'm making progress in terms of actual skill with the new movement and shooting mechanics.

A lot of the reviews focus on the campaign which is fine. The MC score is about what I would rate what I've played of the campaign so far. Reviews in general aren't really relevant to what the overall consensus of the MP will be anyways down the line. Halo Reach has a 90+ score and I think most Halo fans would consider that a really low point in the series.

...lacks reading comprehension.

Well, they gave Destiny a 6/10 so at least they are somewhat consistent regarding story. However they gave Halo 4 a 9/10. Halo 5 is better than Halo 4 in every single aspect, so that's strange. Personally I'd give Halo 5 a 9 and Halo 4 a 7. It's also not a short game. After 3 hours we finished the first four missions in Legendary 4 player coop. It will take more than 10 hours to beat.

Let's all agree on one thing
85 is a good score
Halo 5 is a good game
A meta critic rating will not effect sales, how many people do you know that even knows of the site called metacritic?

I know zero, and I'm a pretty popular guy

Quoting this most excellent assessment for truth. 85 is a fine score. Halo 5 will sell gangbusters and be enjoyed by many :)

Well I haven't played the game...I only have a PS4 but from what I've seen, the game looks great and I'm sure playing it provides an even better experience, I doubt a metacritic score will affect sales of this game

That's actually, factually, untrue. There have been many studies in the industry that show the effect of a meteoritic score on games sales.

Not that I really think Halo 5 has much to worry about in this area.

Wouldn't they have a similar weight to Gamespot, who gave it an 8.

Take their 9, and Gamespot's 8... and what do you end up with? :p

Gamespot's 8 is already registered on the Metacritic website (and the average is still 85) whereas IGN's score isn't, that's why :p

*As of now

So I think saying "reviews have a big impact" just generally isn't correct. They do have some impact, but it's not that big.

That's not to say that reviews have 0 impact - they do - but being in the top 33% of AAA games only raises your sales by 30% on Xbox, 90% on PS4, and (not shown) 10% on PC.

Actually, the act of being reviewed is a far better predictor. Even a negative review immensely raises the visibility of your game.

Then IGN's 9 would probably leave it at 85 also right? Probably moving it back from 84.75 or something, back to 85.00.

Hmm, I see your point, but IIRC IGN has a tad stronger weighting? I mean I wouldn't be surprised if the score is bumped up to 86 because of it, particularly as it is leaning towards 86 more than 85 (due to the influx of reviews on the 27th after Gamespot which were all > 85), so IGN will probably give it that nudge to push it over.

So I guess Stinkles and crew are enjoying Thanksgiving early. I can just imagine him now...eating his way out of a giant roasted bird.

It's actually ridiculous that MP isn't weighted more in reviews for a game like Halo. Competitive MP is the bread and butter for so many.

I mean, SP is pretty important. But I feel that SP is getting way too much emphasis.

I can't believe we have reached the point where we're talking about weight in a Metacritic score. Good lord.

It's a review thread...hence why this sort of stuff gets discussed (and in the OP you've got a Metacritic link to support such discussions). Doesn't seem out of the ordinary or crazy. Plenty of discussions have touched on this stuff already.

Don't believe it? Then I think you're in the wrong thread bud.

The contents?

...which includes the scores lol. It's not as if we haven't discussed the +/- of the games. Plenty of other posters have discussed the MC average too...because you know, once again, these are just one of the things that can get discussed on review threads by posters.

We were just talking about the scores Gamespot and IGN have posted, and speculated on how that may move the overall metascore. Part of this speculation involved considering that both of these sites likely weigh heavier on the total than most other sites.

I think we're doing okay actually.

yes, specially considering that highest rated games are usually good SP and don't have MP or a basic/functional MP. There is an army of people working on an excellent MP but their work takes little attention.

Master Chief Collection and Halo 5 have the same scores.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Wait, no it doesn't. What?

To be fair though, MCC wasn't reviewed as broken. If you keep that in mind, and also assume that scores from prior games should compare consistently with newer games, then the real surprise would actually be that MCC didn't score a shitload higher. It's a compilation of four games rated at 97, 95, 94 and 87... logically it should have broke the whole rating system, lol.

EDIT: Halo 5 went up to 86, so I was wrong. You win this round Kralamoonard.

Looks like your correct. It went up to 86

The actual content of the reviews
if people bothered to read them
is very strong. The level design is fantastic, so is the gameplay and the online is universally praised
and working at launch woot woot

The gamespot review in particular reads fantastically, yet people are so focused on the single digit number at the bottom of the page. 'Tis all very silly.

Also never have I seen a game so heavily critiqued for it's story.

Level design is fantastic? The first one was alright, second was
corridor arena corridor arena corridor weird flying segment.
Does it get better?

Liked the verticality of some segments in the second mission, didn't care for the flying segment also however. Keep playing there are some real gems here. Only up to mission 9 myself and excited to see more!

Edit: I am unsure of my feelings to the AI team mates, playing it solo I can see how it is structured for co-op in mind, excited to try it with some friends. However I miss the feel of isolation from previous games.

To me it just seems obvious that 343 cuts corners with the story so that they will have reasons to release this yearly. I'm glad reviewers are dinging them on it.

Or else the series end up like Forza or AC or random sports game -- annual release with but minor changes. To play the carrot and stick game with the playerbase deserves a lashing.

Always factor in the single-player campaign.
