Halo |OT 24| In Before the Locke

I dont understand how people can still play this turd.

Jesus, DestinyGAF still burns through OTs in two weeks. I don't understand how you can follow threads like that. Gave up on the Dota threads for similar reasons.

(Which reminds me, people doing the OTs really need to start putting the archive links back in.)

We need to preserve payphone booths as historical relics so kids can learn of The Old Ways.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Destiny is the worst game that I cannot stop playing. B)

Actually... I just really enjoy it *shrugs*

Now excuse me as I react to things that are old news for everyone else.

Wooo, they fixed the Grunts! I love the look now.

Bleh, they kept the Halo 4 Jackals. I just don't like the design at all. At least the energy shield looks a lot more glowy.

They also kept the Halo 4 Elites, and while I don't love them, I don't loath them. Anyways, moving on to the Prometheans/Forerunners, I love that they really expanded upon their variety and added a more humanoid profile to them. However, I still think the designs are too complicated and not nearly sleek enough.. and what's with Megatrons face? I'm still not in love with this enemy class visually, but I can't wait to fight them.

I just really wish they would stuck closer to the actual Forerunner aesthetic.. I really wish we could fight Forerunner enemies that look like this:

I realize canonically that what we are fighting are post composer Forerunners, and the pictures above are from when they were alive. But the 'Prometheans' we fight look nothing like the Forerunner aesthetic I know and love.. plus the ancient armor just looked cooler.

Anyhow. I still find this human architecture incredibly bland and boring. It looks brilliant in in concept art, but in execution with the Halo engine it just doesn't do it for me. Everything sorta looks and feels like plain building blocks, where only the skybox is appealing.

Also, the covenant architecture doesn't look very Covenant. I thought this was a human city at first. It should be brighter, sleeker and more organic. It kinda lost the charm.

However, when it's all said and done, this excites me:

Plus, Buck is on Lockes team? Hell yes.

Look, I know gameplay is the thing that matters in the end. But I loved Halo for it's beautiful and alien worlds, and its art style was very unique. I just feel a lot of that visual identity and charm is lost here, it doesn't look right to me and isn't exciting me or making me wish to explore it the way past games did. Again, if they nail the gameplay I'll be happy, but this is still something that bums me out.

They totally riffed on that old concept art for the DLC Halo 4 armor too (which I loved). Weird that they've kept the designs so different, even in the games they have themselves produced.

This pic feels like Forerunner meets the Geth

Exclusivity, pre-order bonuses, junk food tie-ins, etc etc are all shitty but it comes with the territory of buying games that are being distributed by a big publisher. Yea I wish I had Hawkmoon, and a bunch of extra stuff but sadly it's how Activision does business. I just feel like compared to the initial PS4 exclusive stuff people are going overboard.

Hope you don't trade it in, but if you aren't enjoying it then you gotta do what you gotta do :/

Haha, I complained and complained and still complain about that. I was just hushed up by people and told that if I were a "true fan" of Bungie, I would have paid attention and bought a PS4.

I don't know about "true fan", but it was obvious Sony had Destiny on lock from the very early days, and it would be the premiere platform for it.

Not exactly disagreeing, but it's more old Elite/Sangheili architecture rather than Covenant. They've been shown to have a more indo-islamic style futurist architecture in the past compared to the covenant's more insect-like organic style.

Well yeah. Still miffed about it though. But that's nothing compare to what Bungie did to Mac gamers back in the CE days :p

I've always disliked the look of the Prometheans, there design just doesn't look like it fits in Halo. The Forerunner concept are posted looks really nice, I hope they put an end to the Prometheans in 5 and then we can fight actual Forerunners in 6.

My problem with the Prometheans, besides how annoying they are to fight on Legendary (fuck watchers) was how they were all the same. The enemies, all silver with light up bits. Their weapons, all silver with light up bits. The environments, more metal with light up bits. The Didact? Metal, light up bits.

Hoping we get any entirely new enemy type in 5, but the different coloured types we've seen are a good start.

Fair enough, but I'm still not seeing that either. It just sorta looks like a crossbreed of UNSC and Covenant. I would have liked to see something a little more exploratory for Halo, perhaps something that embraces their culture and evolutionary heritage more, while infusing modern Covenant elements within.

The Flood's returning as an enemy in the campaign and they're not talking about it to surprise us. "Hey, look here at this new Promethean Soldier class and all this new stuff for multiplayer!" Game releases, no one has The Flood on their radar and bam, introduce nostalgic Flood reveal, terrifying music included.

Could be awesome and extremely clever.

They are really my least favorite alien designs of 343i
I'd much rather have seen them double down on the proto-avian Skirmishers design from Reach. No aliens in a sci-fi game looked like that. Now they're just midget humanoid Godzillas.

Gonna echo what Greencastle said regarding this.

The "Covenant" style of architecture we know from Halo games prior to 4 is more likely attributed to the San'Shyuum--the technological forbearers of the Covenant--than the more militaristic, feudal Sangheili.

It's at night....? And it's half destroyed. Hard to look sleek when your city is falling apart.

I'm guessing this looked pretty grand in its heyday

I get most excited when we see unexplored worlds like Requiem. Giant Forerunner structures in the distance. Grand floating structures that we could not humanly create on one end of the scale. The other end is when even the fauna look intimidating, such as this:

These are the parts of Halo 5 I am going to love to visit.

Wouldn't be that surprising. Halo CE, Halo 2, and Halo 3 all did this at some point or another.

I mean, I'd be much more surprised at a glorious reveal of Mendicant Bias - so long as it came with a little flashback cutscene of him orchestrating... a lot.

Or hell, even another form of Precursor similar to the Flood. Any other biblical things they could draw from for that? hmmmm

That's more like it. That looks sweet.

Yep. Prophet stuff is more in line with typical Covenant design than the Elites. High Charity was built out of a chunk of their home planet after all, and the bulbous nature of their fleets was more in line with that.

FLOOD IN WARZONE

Oh shit. Infection mode could be really interesting with actual Flood going around.... Hmmm...

Considering Invasion was flexible enough to house a bunch of sub-gametypes depending on how the map elements were tagged, I won't be surprised if each Warzone map is essentially its own "gametype." That, or I could see Warzone gametypes looking like this:

Hella Big Team Battle: MOBA Edition
Base Assault (invasion-ish)
Firefight (PvE, one large team of players is tasked with surviving against larger amounts of much stronger enemies)
Multi Team (~4 teams of 6, each of which is allied with an AI faction)
Skull Slayer (Campaign modifiers show up progressively like in Firefight)

Some sort of keepaway mode similar to Ultimate Frisbee would be hilarious at Warzone scale, too. Everyone has no shields and spawns with fisticuffs, only REQs available are speed boosts and Mongooses. When you're holding the frisbee you can't move, but are invincible. AI can pick it up, too.

One thing that worries me is the amount of arena maps we'll be getting. There's 6 War Zone maps so that's 6/20 then we don't know if Big Team maps will actually ship on the disc if they do that takes a bite out the arena maps as well. If not, then there will be 6 War Zone DLC maps and however many Big Team battle maps as the DLC. Seems like they might be relying on forge too much in arena and I don't necessarily like playing on a plain gray map all of the time.

Hate to burst your bubble but the majority of people will be playing Warzone. It should have the most maps. Arena and small right maps is only for a small portion of Halo fans.

Personally I love all aspects of Halo and it's going to be great just to have 24 people in one map.

I hate your ideas, they're worse than Frankies game modes (the firefight, multi team, skull slayer, invasion stuff is not bad). ...buuuut I really hope there's a custom game mode editor and Forge for Warzone. HIGHLY doubt it though.

When are they showing Forge anyway? Was it cut? :/

Forge exists (it was used to make Pegasus and Orion), and Warzone doesn't have Forge or "custom games." Presumably that means you can't tinker with settings the way you could modify Reach Firefight, and conventional lobbies are still available.

Yet arena should have more maps because they will be used for the HCS and their "renewed focus on competitive gameplay". Which Warzone is funding. And since the hardcore will stay longer than the fly by night gimmick players.

Warzone hasn't even released yet and you think what Halo has been is only for a small portion of fans. How many fans loved Infinity? Arena is what makes Halo, Halo.

People will play Warzone because they'll have the bigger is better mentality. It's the same reason Big Team Battle gets as many players as Team Slayer. So many are disappointed at only 12v12. Why does Battlefield get 32v32 etc. They don't even stop to think about player engagement in Halo.

Also, saying that people who want to play Warzone would never play Arena so it's all good. Those same arguments were used to justify new mechanics in Team Slayer saying that you have Slayer Pro or Team Hardcore, it won't affect the game because the casuals would never play blah blah. I think Warzone will be popular, why? Because they've cut out BTB for who knows how long. You can't play anything greater than 4v4 in Arena. There is no firefight, there is no Spartan Ops.

One of the things I'm really curious about is how 343 is going to ensure playlists stay populated. Since Reach players have avoided "competitive" playlists in favor of playlists like Zombies or even Action Sack. I can't help but feel like Arena will be ignored by 95% of the population because there's no customization and it's not chaotic enough.

I'd love to see some fresh designs for Flood enemies. It's weird to think that we haven't seen the flood in a Halo game in 8 years (if you don't count H4 Infection and H2A campaign). Maybe that's what the Guardian is guarding against and what will eventually unite Blue and Osiris?

Pretty much going to happen. You're gonna have people deny, say that Arena is it's own thing, that Warzone people would never have played. But it's inevitable, just like it was inevitable in Halo 4. The classic Halo people didn't want to play Infinity, the Infinity players didn't want to play classic. Because Infinity was more casual and didn't require skill, it won out. That's going to happen here. Why would Warzone people used to calling in Phaetons and heavy weapons, used to choosing loadouts go back to Arena? Hey I can play 12v12, go 14-22 and unlock sweet guns, or I can go play 4v4, struggle to play against competitive players, go 2-15 etc. Halo can't ever support two wildly different styles of play, and maybe that's what 343 wants. The REQ system is the evolution of Infinity. Expect it in every future Halo title, maybe more refined.

Each Guardian is in charge of looking after a fragment of Mendicant Bias and protecting it from a potential return of the Flood.

That's my guess/wish. It'll be like looking for all the pieces of the Triforce.

As much as I would like to see the Flood back at some point, it's probably not going to be in Halo 5. Although, hats off to 343 if they can keep the return a surprise.

I have no idea what Mendicant Bias means, but it sounds fancy. I need to read the books.

They've been pretty tight lipped about campaign so far, but yeah I figure that's the sort of spoiler that people wouldn't even realize was a spoiler and give it away before the game launched. Or maybe they'll make the reveal themselves at one of the other gaming conventions between now and then.

Just like Didact and Librarian, MB was introduced as a character in the Halo 3 terminals. It would be an excellent payoff for lore nerds like me. But part of me wants them to keep that card for a later time, too.

edit: I don't even think he's mentioned much in the books except in the Forerunner trilogy. 343i have already shown glimpses of him in Halo Legends Origins though. Fuckin badass.

Cortana is still viable.

Considering she gave the Chief new information, Im not buying the hand waving explanation that it was just Chief's memories because that makes no sense.

With Halsey and Chief finally crossing paths and doing so early in the game, and the clear mention of the Domain, I'm going assume Chief is interested in the Guardians because of the Domain or their links to it - motivated maybe by the possibility Cortana or something of her may survive in the Domain.

With the Domain being linked to the Flood, it opens doors. What are the Guardians guarding exactly? They seem to be some kind of Heralds of a new Forerunner "Reclamation". Maybe Didact is trying to establish a new connection to the Domain or maybe re-create it?

I have no idea what "The Domain" is and I'm having flashbacks to knowing fuck all about "The Composer" in Halo 4. Hope they explain the story in 5 better than they did with 4.

no way cortana doesn't play a pivotal role in the story. Pretty sure she's going to be merged with the librarian or some shit. her selfless sacrifice probably made her one with the force - er, the Domain.

The Domain is basically the Forerunner's internet. It's the entity upon which all Forerunner experience and perspectives across history is linked and cataloged, and is the backbone to their connected society across the galaxy. It was inherited from/built by the Precursors, and it was destroyed when the first Halos first fired.

The only way is up?
I think they heard those complaints in particular. Whether what they do is good enough, we'll see.
