Halo |OT10| The Calm Before The Storm

After intensive research and a voyage of discovery I have happened upon the most wonderful Halo cocktail.

The Master Chief Mojito!

Ingredients:
  • 50ml Bacardi or 100ml Bacardi Mojito
  • 1/4 Lime (squeezed)
  • 2 sprigs Mint
  • 125ml Mountain Dew Energy
  • Crushed Ice

It is sublime.

Swap out the Bacardi for almost any other Rum and I'm in. Although I would probably use Diet Dew.

I understand your disappointment at the lack of a truly "blank canvas," so to speak, but I'll be honest - sometimes the most interesting art emerges out of constraints that have been imposed on the artist. I look at the three play spaces Certain Affinity has crafted and I see all kinds of interesting and unorthodox areas that we'll see people respond to, and I'm excited to see the variety this helps to encourage.

There's nothing stopping the inclusion of a bank canvas in addition to having pre-made areas. I'm not saying having 3 well defined areas stop creativity, but having a more blank canvas surely would only encourage more creativity?

Never made a Forge map in my life ¯(°_o)/¯

So you're saying, let me paraphrase, that being constrained gives you MORE options than having unlimited space?

Now you see I'm no mathematician or wizard, but I bet I could whip out an equation that could prove you wrong but maybe common sense will prevail and I won't have to.

No, I'm saying that sometimes constraints produce more interesting responses. A lot of the ideas that have been thrown around - being able to lock together large structures as one piece, a blank canvas, terrain, skyboxes, etc. - are great ideas. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that if I gave you every Lego piece ever produced that you couldn't create some incredible things, I'm just saying that watching what someone can do to turn a specific Lego set into something its creators never imagined it would be is fun too.

Can't believe there is a retail copy flying around and the person really didn't leak anything, you see this really rare.

I remember last year at this time I was watching live streams of people playing 1 vs 1 on asylum on leaked copies.

I wouldn't call it a leak. Seems more like a theft from a disc pressing facility to me.

A Forge made Lockout remake in space would be pretty cool.. just sayin.

Soo... another spaniard has presumably downloaded an illegal copy of Halo 4. I'm trying to contact him, no promises.

Ugh, I hope it hasn't leaked out onto torrents already. Although, I feel if that leak earlier were real then we would have seen more by now.

Ok, thats pretty awesome.

I've seen a few comments like this in response to my posts, so some elaboration and (hopefully) clarity is probably in order.

Generally speaking, I only build BTB maps, because that’s what I like to play. I built a total of five maps in Halo 3, maps that were polished and iterated on many times to a point where I was satisfied with them. (I'd started over a dozen, but only five made the cut, so to speak.)

I built just two maps to completion with Reach, despite the expanded tool set and dramatic increase in ease of use. As with Halo 3, I started over a dozen. I only built two to completion in Reach because while I kept coming up with map ideas, for the most part they didn't fit in with the geometry of Forge World. And to build them up in the air – as I did with one of the maps – placed serious creative limitations on the map: it meant every surface had to be flat and grey. And then in the end, the use of nothing but Forge objects as the geometry cratered the frame rate, making them unplayable in BTB HaloGAF customs, which is why I built them. Both maps were killed that way. I spent weeks working on them and one playtest killed’em dead.

One of the maps I attempted but never completed was set in the Gulch. But the terrain was uneven, and the space asymmetric, and so I kept having to change my designs to fit the geometry. And after a week of trying to get my ideas to fit in there, my original ideas were unrecognizable and I gave up in frustration.

What I wanted in Halo 4 was this: A big open flat space like the basin on Sandbox, but an open grassy meadow instead. And then 5-6 different grass-textured large objects to place to form my own hills on that space. Then I could dream up a map - symmetric or asymmetric - and make it as flat or hilly as I wanted, without the result looking like a grey metal dungeon. Toss in a range of rocks, tree objects, and the suite of additional Forge objects, and you’d be able to “accidentally” make beautiful maps, as the developer on the video said.

Right now it looks like the three Forge maps have the same set of limitations as Forge World: no big open spaces to build on. So if I dream up a BTB map, and that map does not fit in with the highly detailed geometry the map designers came up with, I have to use all Forge pieces. And then those pieces mean everything is flat and grey, which everyone hates because it's boring and ugly. And even if I manage to make a map I like, despite it being flat and grey, I run the risk of cratering the frame rate and so end up with junk in the end. (Again, this is how my work in Reach all ended.)

That's why I'm bummed out about Halo 4's Forge.

Great post.. Im no seasoned Forger, but that is the primary reason why I didn't touch it at all in Reach. Strangely, although more simple in many ways, I found forge maps in Halo 3 on sandbox a lot more fun to play. I really don't see why CA didn't account for that, its kinda an obvious want and a very easy one to accommodate. If they had a nice flat surface that was pretty sizey that then fed into more complex terrain I would be happy. Also, why is the griffball arena so small, ugly and grey? Why can't we have more color or style pallets to choose from? Blah, forge in Halo 4 just is leaving me a little empty feeling, which is too bad because two of the environments look awesome.

We're getting three Forge maps. I just wanted one open space, on one of those maps. Not even a full map. Just a nice big swath of land to build on. A fraction of one map. I really didn't think it was unreasonable.

It's really not, I just don't think they thought of it. An omission. A glaring one.

Wait wait wait, so
Naomi has Mark VII? I assumed so at first but only because we hadn't learned of GEN 2 Mjolnir... or is GEN 2 the same as Mark VII? If not, isn't that redundant? Or do only S-IVs get GEN 2 and S-IIs get Mark VII, and everyone forgets about the few surviving S-IIIs and laughs at them?

I think fracas is completely wrong to say that Syracuse is defending less options.

Have 343 dropped the ball on giing the hardcore forger's a flat, clean slate? Yes they have. Everyone agrees.

I think Syra's point was more of a "play the hand you're dealt" kinda thing. We wanted aces, we all did. 343 made the same mistake Bungie did (Foundry vs. Sandbox) and it'll be all too soon bfore 343 can give us a successor to Sandbox, which was essentially 3 perfectly flat spaces.

Similarly, you can look back to Halo 3 and see the crazy things forgers did with a lack of proper tools/techniques provided by Bungie. I think that was all he was saying.

I think that Forge has been a series of misses since Halo 3... Sandbox should have been remade for every game - it would be better than FW for sure and more flexible for builders. I'm not sure how it was screwed up so badly.

Excellent post. I completely agree. They really missed the mark with the structures and terrain.

That's NintendoEVERYWHERE. Maybe it's where I get my temperance. Nintendo fans think I have batshit expectations because I still want a Nintendo game to have Halo 2 levels of online functionality.
Yeah I hate that about Nintendo fans. I love a lot of Nintendo IPs but as of late they seem to care more about gimmicks than actually creating quality products.

I get his point completely, I just don't agree much.

Why have MS Paint when I can use Photoshop? I've seen some very impressive art drawn with MS Paint, but I can replicate that in Photoshop, plus much, much more.

The things that people are asking for....they certainly seem feasible to incorporate, at least to me. However, it's just not happening. I will say that Halo 4's forge is a hell of a lot more impressive than Reach's was, and that's a start. I wish we could've gotten more though.

I realize that his point was sort of a lemons/lemonade nature. Perhaps I should have been more specific. This comment:

I understand your disappointment at the lack of a truly "blank canvas," so to speak, but I'll be honest - sometimes the most interesting art emerges out of constraints that have been imposed on the artist.
Is something I disagree with. I think the best art - and maps - come from creative freedom, not constraints. The wall on Foundry absolutely impeded the kind of maps that could be made in ways the open crypt of Sandbox did not. The basin of Sandbox enabled map makers in ways the detailed geometry on the island of Forge World did not. In hindsight I should have been more clear. (Often that comes at the cost of a longer post, when sometimes I just want to make a quick point. Seems like every time I do that it goes misunderstood. It's something I constantly struggle with - succinct clarity.)

I do agree with the idea that some incredibly creative things will come from the geometry we're getting. That was the case with Forge World, as well. But I think 343 and Certain Affinity have (potentially, since we have not seen each map in full detail) put a muzzle on the range of maps that can be created. Which is an odd thing to do. As Dani said, a really glaring omission.

The leak talk reminds me that I played a leaked/pirated copy of Reach before release on a internet-cafe that had console setups for rental in the middle of a semi dangerous barrio. They sold pirated games there and you could ask them to put any of those discs in a console for you to play in increments of 30 minutes. Yeah not doing that shit again, the entire time playing I felt like I was seconds away from getting stabbed in between the ribs for my wallet and phone by one of the many teenage thugs hanging around the place. Halo 4 is not hyping me enough to risk getting stabbed (or maybe shot since I now have a nicer car), I'll wait.

Of course that's what he was saying, it doesn't mean we should be sticking to the same constraints after all this time.

My only issue is the fact that we'll now see the same two things that we've been seeing since Halo Reach

1. Forgettable Greyscale environments that feel Blocky due to the same Lego pieces always being used
2. Maps using small portions of the same pre-made landscapes

My issue with Forgeworld was that people really only made "good" maps in two general areas because they were the only >flat< areas with usable pre-made terrain. Everything else is either floating in the air or located in "The Box".

Really, the only pieces of land we were given were rocks/Grass Patches from the Golfholes. These worked until every single map used them in the same exact ways, plus the grass patch could only go so far with such small real estate.

I have my fingers crossed for some sort of terrain editor for Halo 5. I've had so many maps with 'Themes' that went down the drain. Dull grey surfaces can't communicate more than 'Forerunner' in the world of Halo. While the UNSC skins will change things up, they'll still have a majority of the same exact geometry, not to mention it's just a different shade of grey.

I need trees
I need more rocks
I need hills and patches of land that can be manipulated into an abundance of different things!

I recall looking at a PS3 racing game where creating a map looked fantastically interesting. While having a bunch of legos, there was still this awesome art tool that you could use to raise and lower the land with the push of a button, not to mention a tool to create lakes and snow...

We need something like this for Halo. Snow maps. Ice tools. Lakes that don't have annoying 15 foot waves that constantly go through placed geometry...

Sorry for the rant. It has been building up since the announce of Halo 4. I was hoping they'd do more with forge. Big letdown.

Did you see the Halo 4 terminal video?

from yesterday? i did. thanks for checking though. with all the stuff it would be easy to miss really cool shit.

speaking of (hopefully) really cool shit, bulletin on for the night still? any clues to its contents? possibly forge related with the recent vids?

When you make "maps" for map editors.

Never mind that forge is outsourced and one still cannot get a nice clean human aesthetic with a flat terrain:
