Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Reading the Polygon article right now. I think I mention earlier when they reviewed Halo 4. I like this website but everything is too big even at a super high resolution.

Wait wait wait is it confirmed CSR is not visible in game? Because if that is the case it's pointless

This was confirmed a couple of months ago when it was first announced. Not sure why so many are shocked by it now.

I agree- it's worthless. It'll probably be plagued with so many problems and inconsistencies that we won't care about it anyways. It's basically just the new BPR-type ranking that nobody will give two squirts about.

From the Polygon article:

To me it sounds like Destiny is going to be more of a cooperative experience than a competitive one.

Eh .. wasn't this known?

Everybody who thinks Destiny will be again a competive shooter like Halo was will get a bad surprise I guess.

It might not be that simple. CSR was an afterthought once the game went gold and the community cried out for a ranking system.

I highly doubt it's as simple as "hey, let's make an algorithm that displays skill in a 1-50 form, then let's drag and drop that number on to people's baseball cards in the game!" Then again, maybe it is.

Regardless, there has to be a reason that 343i isn't promoting CSR in-game (other than "boosting"), yet it'll be available on literally every other device applicable. My guess is it's more trouble to put in-game than it's worth, and 343i doesn't want to deal with inserting another TU and slightly modifying the UI in April.

That's completely my guess, though. It's definitely not as simple as "putting a number on a screen". Prove me otherwise.

Yea, it is as simple as that. Remember when Fyrewulf was adamant that they couldn't patch bloom out of the pre-existing Reach maps? A 343 employee mocked his skepticism on Twitter saying something along the lines of "I love it when people boast of what we can and can't do. Our technicians are amazing". That was completely changing embedded gameplay systems. If you or others honestly think they can't TU in a number on the UI, then you've got seriously low expectations of this AAA studio reported to be assembled from the finest the industry has to offer.

And I don't have to prove anything. The bottom line is, if they wanted ranked playlists in their game they would have done. They don't and so they didn't. Simple as that.

They first announced it prior to release at MLG Dallas, people thoughts they would actually listen to feedback, see what their competitors did well and work from there. It technically isn't new, but the sting still hurts, again.

It's in the recent bulletin for people not aware or wondering why it's being brought up again.

I can see it being more cooperative than competitive, but the two "Mystery Game" rounds from the Bungie Pentathlon seem to indicate it still has some sort of competitive gameplay.

the most challenging teams I've played hands down are the ones that literally sit their asses down in one corner of a map, power weapons handed to them - take one of them out? oh, thanks to instant respawn and global sprint he's back there in 2 seconds. people complain about camo (which when assigned to simply a button press is stupid but that's another topic in itself) leading to camping, well personal ordnancepromotes fucking whole team camping especially at the higher "skill" levels

lots of camping on Adrfit :(

Can the UI Not get patched post launched?
what happened to that "we want to do more with Title Updates" stuff that was touted per launch?

It could, but it's just not something that will, nor should be a priority in my opinion (coming from someone that thinks the UI is absolutely atrocious).

Staten has two dozen writers on his team for Destiny? Sounds like a lot, how many writers typically write the script for a AAA game?

Holy.

Shit.

Ruby Tuesday. Cinderella. Ballerina.

HOLY. FUCK.

Fantastic News. I hope that Destiny impresses me like Halo 1/2 and RDR did.

For real? thats some great news.

From the Polygon Article

"When I came to interview, I knew right away ... just by talking to them, I knew that this was a whole other level of people that are passionate about games and their creative energy," says Sandbox Designer Danny Bulla. "Coming up here, it was like everybody was hungry. They wanted something new."

Bulla comes to Bungie via Rockstar, the studio best known for its open-world crime spree series Grand Theft Auto. Bulla's last game with Rockstar was the widely acclaimed, mega-selling Red Dead Redemption. It was a game renowned for its vast open world, innovative gameplay and compelling narrative. It was "game of the year" almost everywhere. Bulla was a senior designer. Now he's at Bungie because he wants to break new ground in video games. He mentions this by way of suggesting contrast.

Bulla says the major difference between Bungie and his old digs is Bungie's singular focus. At Rockstar, there were always multiple games. At Bungie, there's only one — and everyone is all in on it. Bulla is Destiny‘s sandbox designer.

The article is a long read, but it is great.

It was before release, they (and I) didn't know!

Come on 343, they are taking your players.

Oh, no- the laughing .gif was just about the idea of 343 listening to community feedback.

I'm getting close to jumping ship on this game myself. As it is, I only play once or twice a week. I've been holding out for some kind of news about the TU. I understand it's been salty in here for a couple of months, and I'm getting pretty salty myself, but I think that most of the design problems with this game have been clearly identified by HaloGaf and other communities during this time. Random ordnance, instant respawns and sandbox balancing all need to be addressed.

Last night, the lead multiplayer designer for the game took the time to write a section for the bulletin. And what did he announce?

That there's going to be Infinity CTF.

I don't think they're getting the message. And if they haven't gotten it by now, well.....it's getting hard to hold out hope.

What happened the last time we saw Kevin Franklin in an interview?

He was asked about eSports and mentioned Grifball.
You people set your expectations too high.

Still man, they could have gone that extra mile.

Oh no doubt at all there. Just saying, I didn't expect them to go "Surprise! Ranks in game!" They are adding them to Waypoint to at least try to have some kind of ranking. My guess is they will be included in Halo 5. Seems like the easiest thing to guess at this point.

343 lies just like Ono does.

I assume they will still ad some big features through TUs.

I'm guessing Infinity CTF will have personal ordnance and instant respawn, with the ability to drop the flag and no carrier waypoint.

I'm guessing that because it would literally make no sense.

Just read it a bit ago. It was an interesting read...I still can't believe that they are the same people who released Reach.

I wonder if Bungie designed significant amounts of Promethean concepts but then retooled them into Destiny concepts with an unwritten rule that Bungie still got keepsies, but then 343 decided to use some regardless, hence the Cryptum/Destiny Cryptum weirdness.

The lead designer thought Abandon would be suitable for 2-flag and liked Oddball on Complex.

In all seriousness, busting their asses to implement big features in Halo 4 is probably not the best use of their time. If anything, they will dedicate a small team to updating small aspects of the game such as weapon balance. And aside from the people pitching in on Spartan Ops and presumably th upcoming maps, they're gonna need to dedicate people to Halo 5 pre-production and the improvement of existing tools and the creation of brand new tools. Halo 5 is going to be their big opportunity to do more new things with Halo meanwhile addressing fan complaints. In a perfect world, they'll listen to their fans and instead of bringing COD conventions into Halo they will create a few of their own while ensuring the Halo core is in Halo 5. And if they're smart they'll "borrow" ideas from Destiny which will see light later this year; early enough in the production of Halo 5 that they can steal from it.

K so Blizzard recently talked more about their new replay feature that's going in Heart of the Swarm. I think I mentioned it here when it was first announced but it's pretty amazing stuff.

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/8501413/New_Replay_and_Resume_Features_Coming_in_Heart_of_the_Swarm-1_24_2013

Blizzard said:
Now that you can watch a replay with friends, we’re taking it a step further and making replays even more powerful. We’ve added the ability to jump right into any spot in a replay and take over the gameplay from that point. You and your friends can pick a timestamp, choose which of the original players you’re each going to take over for, and play the game as you like.

There are many possibilities for the Take Command function. You might be playing against a friend and challenge one another to go back to a turning point in the game and play it again. You might be playing with a teacher who can now take you back to play through the same section of a game repeatedly, improving on your results with practice.

This feature offers you the ability to play out scenarios that you previously could only wish for. Remember that game between Flash and Jaedong? If you and I have the replay, we could find out what might have happened if Flash’s Siege Tanks were able to avoid being abducted by Jaedong’s Vipers!*

Fucking awesome stuff.

So when did it become a thing to jump around the sides of Haven in SWAT? It's becoming annoying now.

I probably just need to adapt.

Fucking awesome stuff.
I wonder if the same principles could be applied to a Halo game or if there's something fundamentally different. Definitely a crazy feature that changes the game.
