Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

A quick poll:
What is - for you - the best thing about Halo 4?
(It can be overall, or specifying, this in campaign, this in multiplayer, this song of the OST, etc)

That would be the moment, when Master Chief declines Del Rio's order. It was the best cutscene in this game.

Pre-Halo 4 CTF you had to move out of the base to capture any power weapons, and use those power weapons to attack the base. In Halo 4 with Infinity CTF, teams can happily camp their own base, rack up kills, get two or three players with proper weapon drops (re-roll if you like!), and then move up to attack. The complete opposite of what CTF should be. And that's not even counting the waypoint and the inability to drop the flag. Every ounce of strategy the gametype had at one point is now history.
But what of Halo honor?

baby you got a stew going :)
yes

Finally got around to trying out the new Forge playlist. I had no idea they changed some of the gametypes with these maps. CTF is definitely different. It feels great on that Midship/Sanctuary-esque map.

Now just remove ordinance, put some weapons on the map and baby you got a stew going :)

umm...already there.

This so much. I honestly don't mind personal ordnance in Slayer games, but take that shit out of CTF.

even better.

Plus, any powerups you were able to grab off the map dissipated after a set amount of time, forcing the player to be aggressive if they wanted to fully benefit from them. Allowing players to have infinite use of camo without fear of it running out is terrible for several reasons.

I must say, as peak populations drop like a rock and Halo 4 continues to descend down the XBL activity ranks, I thought it was great that B.S. Angel spent the first half of the bulletin describing how she camps in Halo 4. That was very reassuring. I appreciate the strong post-release vision 343 has for this game, it makes me want to keep playing. I Trust Them.

I find it reassuring because it shows that she uses effective strategies

The article was great and it was about Bungie, not Destiny. The video is interesting too, learned a lot on how Bungie functions.

And to add, I've never seen Bungie speak so confidently about a game before. Good or not, I get a vibe it's going to be very different and new, which is always great to see.

It's super powerful, I love it.

I can't wait to read the article and have been anticipating it for days. Will read when I go home and end this horrible day.

On the topic of drinks, not sure if this has been posted before. Found it a few days ago. Kinda cool, if somewhat pointless:

More here.

As to the bulletin, I've known for months that CSR would be Waypoint-only, so I hardly feel 'let down'. (Though that doesn't change the fact that such ranks really should be in-game, if they're to have any tangible, positive impact on population.)

I'm glad to hear Doubles will be implemented as a permanent playlist, though I'm wary about the potential for bad decisions to be made in regards to map and gametype choices in any such playlist. (Let's have a nice range of CC-selected maps, specifically designed for 2v2 gametypes.)

Even though I've established myself here as a comprehensively negative poster re: most things Halo 4, I'm encouraged by the vague noises implied in the bulletin in relation to gametype tweaking in preparation for CSR implementation. I'd love to see some bare-bones 4v4 playlists with good map selections, no ordnance, no loadouts, no specializations, static weapon spawns and classic objective settings.

(Unlikely I know, but

When the designer talked about how he hopes people are talking about the things they're creating, rather than features from other games, it made me weep a little for the state of Halo. That's almost the opposite mantra to how Halo 4 was designed, with every addition a slightly revised twist on something that's already popular within the genre, let alone the industry.

How can anyone think Infinity CTF is a good idea? Its like the worst aspects of two games merged.

Why couldnt we have BTB objective instead?

Random = fun

Because infinity S & btb are the most popular playlists?
Because that's a strawman argument that could be applied to the existence of IS in the first place?

Slayer is always the most popular game type in any Halo. Its not popular because it is infinity slayer.

so can't wait to read that. Not enough time on lunch break here. It's bookmarked without a doubt.

I thought 343 nailed the feeling of controlling a Spartan, with the power and weight that implies. The heavy thudding footsteps, the slight shifts in the HUD to imply we've got a helmet on, the video feeds relayed onto it. And then especially in cinematics, the Chief is a hugely intimidating figure, dwarfing everyone around him. He is portrayed as a big walking tank in a way that just didn't come across before. And 343 pulled this off while restoring fluid movement and agility to the series, after Reach. It was something Bungie struggled to portray without impacting gameplay (again, Reach) but 343 hit it out of the park.

I'd agree they nailed how the Chief felt. Without a doubt how they handled Chief was amazingly well done. They hit that out of the park and I do think that on that front even Bungie would be proud of how they handled Chief.

I'm pretty sure during Halo 4's development and pre-release most of GAF was slurping on all the changes. There was a few of us who saw this coming, but to pretend like GAF was not on board with the changes is disingenuous.
Yeah no that is wrong, people were more optimistic but mostly the reactions to all these changes were pretty negative.

In short: GAF trusted 343 prior release.

The Bungie article is really cool and interesting

Agreed.

wtf does a sandwich have to do with Halo?

Doritos compliment sandwiches nicely?

Doritos...Halo

I mean really why are we even discussing Halo 4? and instant respawn? and ordnance? and all that shit in a Halo thread, that shit doesn't belong in Halo and shouldn't belong in this thread.

You make a fair argument.

Alright, gonna try and revise the playlists again.

Rumble Pit*
8-player Free-For-All. Slayer (possibly Infinity), Oddball, Regicide, potentially King of the Hill?

Team Doubles*
2v2. Mix of Slayer and Objective. Uses relatively "classic" settings such as on map spawns, flag return times, etc.

Infinity Slayer
4v4, same as it is now, maybe bugfixes.

Team Hardcore*
4v4. Mix of classic/Slayer Pro with revisions and "classic" objectives, so probably something like Team Slayer Pro / Regicide / Classic CTF.

Team Deadeye*
4v4, SWAT/Snipers.

Infinity Objective
5v5. Infinity CTF, Oddball, King of the Hill.

Big Team Tactical
6v6 or 7v7. Dominion and Extraction.

Big Team Battle
8v8. Mix of Slayer and Objective.

Flood
12 Players

Grifball*
4v4.

Double EXP*
The experimental 11th "rotational" slot, constantly offering Double EXP. Could host things like Race. Also used for the DLC playlist when map packs come around.

*These playlists may feature custom maps.

If they REALLY want only 10 playlists, Team Hardcore becomes Team Slayer Pro / Team Snipers / Team SWAT leaving Classic CTF to only exist in Team Doubles, and sadly doesn't leave a spot for Team Regicide unless you want to clutter up Objective even more.

I've got the thought that maybe they can only have a dozen or so playlists at once. The prospect of this is horrifying.

That was the standout moment for me as well in that video. Great perspective and mentality to have when the industries weathervane is always pointing the same way. Their reverence for Dark Souls is very promising and quite unexpected too. Quietly confident there won't be gameplay altering weapon unlock exp investment systems in Destiny.

All aboard the hype train. Reading about Marty's work process on Destiny excites me, especially for the first time I open the menu. I'm excited for whenever Bungie decides that it's time to fully unveil everything.
Yeah, I fully expect that to be an awesome moment.

Hey, maybe I'll go on media black out for Destiny.

I wonder what 343 thinks of Halo 4 now. It was obviously a commercial success, but with the player count dropping they have to think that they're doing something wrong. I also wonder what they're doing now, because listening to the community isn't it.
