Halo |OT2| Hyper-Athletic Speed And Mass And Weight and Power

Whats the worst that would happen. Fyrewulff would stop playing Halo possibly become suicidal, and thousands more would go out and buy it seconds upon hearing the news... Makes perfect sense to me.

Post assumes I'll be playing Halo 4 PvP multiplayer. It could be BR/Sniper start for all I care.

Different crowd. I dont want to call anyone out, but there seems to be a fair bit of competitive hate over there, a recent post is about how the game is going to cater for the MLG crowd have like 6 weapons, no automatics and be no fun. Thats pretty laughable, Halo 4 is certainly going to cater for the casuals.

I have seen an entire forum full of people (not HBO) who hate any form of competitive Halo and thing anyone who uses precision weapons is a tryhard who doesnt care about fun. I do hate that belief. I remember having a pretty stupid argument with a forum full of people clamoring for 100% AR starts. Incredible how 'elitist' some people are about the people they call elitist lol. I guess there was maybe 10 people max, but all the same, it was a skewed outlook for so many to have. I dont even mean about liking AR starts, I mean more about how they viewed anyone who did ever enjoy a more competitive side to the game.

That's because people rightly are afraid of a niche demographic "taking over" a game with their own style. Not saying that competitive shouldn't exist or that there aren't a lot of competitive players; just that most people's definition of 'competitive' is not MLG-caliber. I think there's the same diametrically opposed issue here and on HBO; people who consider themselves pros, people who consider vanilla Reach Bungie's true intent, and looking down at people who think differently.

I think I've said it before here, but I am bothered by the sentiments of some that MLG should have their way with a title. Pro play should not ever trump making a game fun for the broadest segment. Can both be accommodated in the same game? I think so.

I have lots of thoughts about AR and BR for Halo 4 and in general. Its such a tricky thing to get right, regardless of how easy everyone here seems to think it is. Its not as simple as "just spawn with both". Both would have to be pretty balanced with each other and/or matchmaking really tight to ensure you play against the proper skill group. Neither are exactly easy to do. A skilled BR person will usually beat on an AR user, leaving AR user sad. To balance that you either make AR better or BR worse, which leaves BR user angry. Its not as simple as that though, and I believe they could actually balance both to be effective and liked, but its a fine line and would be quite tricky to do. There's also the matter of "adapt" but let's be real here, many people won't do that, and they shouldn't necessarily half to. They bought the game too and should be able to have fun too.

Didn't see your comment on first posting, but this probably gets to what I was trying to hit much better than my own.

I wonder if solving the AR/BR issue is just playing with accuracy over range for the AR--extremely inaccurate over med-long distances unless pulsed--and the RoF on BR. That way in close encounters AR is favored while BR will wreck someone foolish enough to go across an open area.

Probably because some magazine has an exclusive deal to reveal that info or maybe they just like watching us squirm.

The reveal of Halo 4 was a pretty conservative, two pronged message. The first was they are bringing Halo back to many of its basic, defining elements: agile, fluid movement and high, gliding jumps, the BR, etc. That was letting us know what's staying the same (or rather, returning). The second was that 343 is adding some pretty big changes onto that foundation. I think they want that out there now, but will reveal aspects of it when it's ready.

But since they've already let us know, I'm anticipating that it will be sooner rather than later when we get more details. Often when doing media events/reveals, the stuff they talk about but don't show is laying the ground work for the next round.

I'd imagine the next big info dump with be the April issue of Edge...hopefully, I can't imagine Edge would just rehash the reveal stuff.

Which leads me back to matchmaking. Hopefully it works well enough and the 2 guns are balanced just enough that together they work out. I'd like matchmaking to still be fast, but to also better match skills. That's not exactly the easiest thing to do either. Hopefully they'll have focused playlists and game types so that it makes matchmaking more effective. I have hopes they'll pull this all off, but I also know its tricky.

It's not tricky. The system was there in Halo 3, and the BR/AR starts would have worked then. If true skill worked, then skilled BR users wouldn't play people who like AR starts. AR start level players will then play people who have to take 7-8 shots to kill with a br. They can certainly kill that user with an AR (since it buys them more time due to missed shots). BR users will get mad because AR has always been the easier weapon to fire. Why make it more powerful? It's low risk low reward, while the BR is a higher risk and higher reward.

As a BR user, it feels more satisfying knowing I out BR'd someone because I had to have great aim, and a good strafe. Is that possible with an AR? Burst fire works at a larger distance, but it still doesn't require much of a strafe or aiming skill. I also find AR starts boring, because at my skill level, having an AR means I have 4 choices. Spend some time looking for a weapon I enjoy using, die to skilled BR users, use the AR (which doesn't have any of the qualities I enjoy in a gunfight), or use the AR/charge/beatdown strategy that everyone uses due to the lunge.

Also, it's laughable to think that because I enjoy competitive gaming, I don't like having fun. Competition is fun for me. Isn't that what True Skill is about in the first place? To match users with similar skill so the best possible competition/fun is ensured? I very much doubt the AR users don't like winning like the competitive players. Otherwise, they wouldn't be complaining about losing to skilled BR players.

I think the difference there was there wasn't netplay, there wasn't a pro circuit lobbying for influence in the game's development, and pure luck. The game was pretty close to not shipping multi even on LAN, and after all the pistol damage was famously tweaked a bit too much.

In other words, lightning in a bottle we're never going to recapture.

That's what I'm hoping. Looking back, I don't think any of Edge's Halo previews have been just rehashes of media events. They always have at least a bit new to show or tell. That they declined to cover it in detail online and just said to wait for their full print preview makes me think that's the case again.

Looking forward to it either way; Edge's Halo coverage has always been great.

The Halo game that had no influence from MLG is also their favorite. Halo CE was pretty dumb if you didn't play Generic weapon settings, or Slayer Pro. Starting with a Plasma Pistol was laughable.

And in Reach I'd be fine with that since they made the PP a viable weapon for something other than its overcharge. If one change from Reach transfers to Halo 4, I'd like it to be that.

So when does the H4 ARG start?

Please, pretty pretty please- Let there be some kind of ARG for this game. The last one was FIVE years ago. Five years ago.

I dunno if ARGs have much life left in them. When Halo 2 did it, they were new, unproven, but I think since then they haven't worked that well...

If we see anything it would be along the lines of Valve's .WAVs, et al rather than a budgeted 42entertainment-scale affair, methinks. Especially because they're pushing the fiction through Primordium and relatively soon Glasslands II: Glass Harder.

Hold on... AR starts?

Wha...

What the hell is this?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought they were going to let us pick our weapons and use them in whatever playlist we wanted. I wasn't expecting shotguns and rockets but I thought we would at the least be able to spawn with a BR/DMR/NR/Carbine/Pistol/whatever if we wanted to.

What the fuck... This is some kind of cruel joke. How many years have people been complaining about this?

I thought that they were gonna clarify things in today's bulletin? I'm disappointed it was a whole lot of nothing. :/
What made you think that? They already told us quite a bit of info last week. Not every bulletin will be a media blow out.

Wait, why is everyone going insane over one match they played without BR starts? I mean yeah, I doubt BR starts will ever happen in a Halo game, but you can't jump to conclusions over one game between 343 employees. They could have been playing any gametype.

What are you talking about dot gif

Why are we assuming the BR will have no spread? The bulletin said no bloom, not no spread. I'll be really really surprised if spread is gone, considering the BR in the ViDoc had a pretty big reticle, and removing spread would just turn it into a laser pointer like the DMR.

That is what hitscan means.
Where you are aiming when you fire is where the server immediately registers a hit.

He is assuming since BS Angel was talking about how she had to pick up a BR in game, and didn't spawn with one.

Obviously the BR and AR are the only weapons one could possibly spawn with.

It's jumping to conclusions is what it is. A lot of crying over something bs angel didn't even intend to say.

For all we know they switched to an AR start gametype just because she was playing. Relax.

Edit: Dammit, beaten by the actual authority on the subject.

Well they did say they weren't going to cock-up the basics.

There comes a point when people jump to such ludicrous conclusions with such over the top levels of overreaction that you have to take a step back and admire it. Then read the retorts of, 'but it's your fault for not explaining every obvious possibility!'
