You're kind of vague here, so I may be misunderstanding you, but what I think you're describing is perfectly normal for Halo games (and games in general) when it comes to interest level on NeoGAF. It wasn't Reach in particular. Halo 3's launch was arguably more anticipated on the website, and even there the thread dwindled down to a dozen or so hardcore fans. Same thing happened with ODST, same thing happened with Reach, same thing will happen with Halo 4.This is not true. Go through the first few Reach OTs and take a quick count of all the people that posted heavily in the beginning and then just gave up. Even the Halo Community OTs contain random posts from people just checking in to say they don't play Reach anymore but are hopeful for Halo 4.
If Halo 4 misses the mark a decent chunk of HaloGAF will just move on.
I haven't seen the remarks you're talking about – I could only find snippets in write-ups – but from what I've read about them, and talking about back-padding in general for a project like this, here's what I think. The articles I've looked at yielded the information that this project was a collaboration of about 400 scientists from seven different countries, though it was led by NASA. Which means:It was amazing until NASA did "America is the best! We did whole work, screw world". It was a global project. Nationalities only exist on this planet. We will be Humans outwards of the Orbit.
Also, Halo: The biggest movie never made.
most people: "Looks pretty good, but I'm slightly worried about all the new elements."

Slightly Live is already writing a H4 introspective.
dadealius: "The game looks good, but did you see that art? So good."
Devo: "Not bad, but fuck this game."
kylej: "lol, enjoy your sixteen efpeaess because of a megazord being built in the middle of the map. Also, what monkey do they have handling the playlists this time?"
Overdoziz: "^What he said."
Hypertrooper: "lol, you guys. How can you judge the game without playing it?"
The Henery is too busy making godzilla-Jackal comparisons.
Ram: "Still haven't preordered this game."
Ken: "I'm just here to make popcorn related avatars."
I, myself, am beyond geeked for Halo 4. All aspects, full stop. Even that goofy movie/series FUD thing. Bring that shit.
A good write-up. The problem can be summarized in essentially one word: money.
Goddamn greedy corporations.
Select got removed because the creator of the map pissed off the wrong people. Its removal has nothing to do with the map itself.Anyone ever find out why Select was removed from the Arena playlist but Uncaged is still there?
I'm glad they took ranks away in Reach, competitive Reach makes you want to go and pound nails through your dick.
Oh interesting article thanks. Also, Halo: The biggest movie never made.

Ironically, I'd say the problem wasn't corporations but rather a few key people. Ultimately I'm very happy the Halo movie didn't get made because it would have been a poor script with a director who I don't think is suited to the space opera feel of the trilogy (liked District 9 for what it was but keep the alien weapons that gib people out of my film.) But what stopped it was ultimately two or three guys who wanted a bigger slice. Sure, it was expensive, and Microsoft asked for a lot without fully understanding the movie business and what that entailed. But it was Jackson and co. that truly sank it.
The Halo movie's ruin was money. "Microsoft's unwillingness to reduce their deal killed the deal," says Shapiro. "Their unwillingness to reduce their gross in the deal meant it got too top-heavy. That movie could have been Avatar." Blomkamp agrees: "One of the complicating factors was that Microsoft wasn't the normal party that you'd go off and option the IP from and make your product.
When you have a corporation that potent and that large taking a percentage of the profits, then you've got Peter Jackson taking a percentage of the profits and you start adding all of that stuff up, mixed with the fact that you have two studios sharing the profits, suddenly the return on the investment starts to decline so that it becomes not worth making."

Beers don't go in those ear lobes.Or beer cans through your ear lobes?
Beers don't go in those ear lobes.
Because ranks are low on the totem pole if the gameplay/playlists are crap anyway.
This guy knows what he is talking about
I wish 343 would just tell us what they are planning for a competitive ranking system. I have been waiting to hear about a competitive ranking system since 343 took over from Bungie. Sadly they used the "we are putting all our efforts into Halo 4" and did not fix the ranking issue in Reach. Now that some Halo 4 news is out, I still don't see or hear any form of news regarding the ranking system except that there will be no 1-50 or an Arena styled system.
I'm just hoping that 343 doesn't make the same mistake as Bungie did with Halo Reach.
I'm glad they took ranks away in Reach, competitive Reach makes you want to go and pound nails through your dick.
I don't understand why 1-50 is controversial. There's nothing wrong with the system, it's the jerks that abuse it that are the problem. The fact of the matter is that it keeps people playing far more than simple progression does. There's a sense of actual accomplishment when you get a 50 because it's not just grinding away at the Cr bar.

Wasn't skill based ranking confirmed ages ago? 343 just said it wouldn't be 1-50.

But those who can't get a fifty don't like to be constantly reminded that they're bad... or something. /Bungie's reasoning.
They said that TruSkill would be implemented but not in a way it was in Halo 3 or Reach, they apparently spoke to someone at (E3?) and said that the ranking system would be so only you could see your rank and others couldn't.
Oh, don't be silly. Bioshock weapons look good. The sniper still looks like something outta Bioshock D:
Is that confirmed though? I thought frankie dropped the "maybe bomb" in front of the part where we could see our rank but no one else's

Yeah it ain't confirmed, he ended up saying that they're still thinking of other ways to add TruSkill I think.
I believe he said something akin to, "We're still looking at it."

I have yet to hear a valid argument as to why the rank should NOT be visible to everyone. Griefing, deranking, quitting, and boosting will happen regardless of whether or not the trueskill is visible or not. Yes visible rank might give you all of that baggage, but it also gives you incentive to win games and not simply grind credits.

To be honest I think most people do buy accounts for bragging rights, but I'm guessing a lot of the people who buy accounts also buy them just for the hell of having a high rank. It will help stop account buying, but there will still be people who buy accounts.Fucking stupid if that turns out to be true.
Doesn't sound like a full picture of it, people would just compile that data online.Fucking stupid if that turns out to be true.

Tbh I just want some form of skill based rank in the game that I somehow can see. I can compromise I guess with only me being able to see my rank. I would much rather have it where I can see others ranks as well, but if it has to be like that then its fine I guess..
I don't see why account buying such a plague that it has to kill public skill ranking altogether. Let the sad nerdlings buy their accounts to feed their virtual persona, but just develop a system that adapts ranking accordingly, a system that can identify a huge drop-off in skill.
It pisses me off no end, if 343 had spent the last three years developing such a thorough and comprehensive system, rather than leaving it until the last minute to find their escape route, then they'd be rightfully praised and we'd have a much better competitive game. I don't play Starcraft, but they incubate their ranking system from the earliest stages of development, and use that time to ensure it's as comprehensive, accurate, and fool proof as possible.
It's the E3 before launch and 343 still haven't even decided on a system. It seems like they've spent the last 3 years racking their brains to figure out a way to nuke visual ranking without pissing off the competitive gamer entirely, which just aggrivates me even more.
I'm sure there's more to it, but the basic premise is just so stupid.
I am better then Robbert. I am the president of the cool club. And you know, what's wrong with a little bragging? It's part of what makes competition fun, in everything.

But they out BR'ed you when you had half shields!!It's laughable when you get sent a message or picture that says 'Bad 50' and they're like a 40 who went -10.
Pixar fan?Is it wrong that I'm starting to like the Halo 4 sniper? :\
I used to think that the people here on these treads were cool until i realized that a lot of them seem to be a-holes that think they are better than everyone else. All you do is sit at a computer and comment all day on this thread. your no better than anyone else on here or waypoint.
The cool JUNIOR club. Heh!

I don't believe anyone anywhere has a problem with a little bragging...

</3Just no. Just fucking no. Get out.
I placed warrior-servants and not just Promethean only. I knew these guys are Juggernauts, yet we (more than likely) will fight Ur-Didact (Promethean) in Halo 4 which he is 1-2 feet taller than a regular sized warrior-servant.The thing you don't seem to realize is that these dudes would be twice as tall as a Spartan. That's not going to happen.
Haha, no. It's just grown on me... unexpectedly, I might add.Pixar fan?
What a laughable mindset to have.
But they out BR'ed you when you had half shields!!
It doesn't though, that's the point, it's a lazy copout, without question.
Other games have proven that such a system can be implemented, and 343 had 4 years of development to figure it out. Obviously they didn't consider it worthy enough of the resources, and so whatever half arsed, half baked, below par system they come out with I won't applaud. We're theoretically looking at a worse system for the average player than that of Halo 2 and 3, if that rumoured system comes to fruition.
And before anyone jumps in with 'we don't know the full details', or 'stop moaning until 343 clarify', I'd love to be wrong, but unfortunately we can only discuss what we believe we know.
Is it wrong that I'm starting to like the Halo 4 sniper? :\
Who won AGL Chicago? I missed it.
