Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I took the test the other day, use gmail here. I got an email today saying "Get your ODST beta code here!" from the expert zone email, go the site which seems down, then check GAF :lol

So how did you get the code exactly? I retook the test just now, and no mention of a beta key anywhere, should I wait for an email, or is the system broken?
First, create a hotmail email. Second, use Internet Explorer. When you're done with the test, it brings up another page where you have to click an obvious button. (Forget what it said)

Then you enter in your email and it sends you the code.

Just noticed something... wanted to see if others have experienced it as well.

As soon as started stock pile, we all had a little speed boost (no, I wasn't using the sprint load out) for a short period of time. O_O

Curious about this.. so for a new page!

Scoreboard!

I did the test but never got another image that asked to submit an email. And this was back when I took the test earlier today...right after getting the email about the chance.

Pistol is an absolute beast. I'm using it more than anything else, sans the needler rifle when I can find it. This is what Halo 3 should have been. So much fun in so many ways and presents the first big evolution of the series in a while. Can't wait for the final game now.

Played a Stockpile game where some asshole on my team was camping our flag room, so when we did the hard work and brought the flags to our base, he would pick up the flags and steal our captures. What a dick. I found out what he was doing so I held one of the flags until the counter went down to make sure I get the credit and the asshole team kills me.

Sounds like Halo!

someone also brought up a good point in a game of stockpile saying that anyone wanting to be anti-team could potentially pull flags out of their own base.

I'm liking this a lot more than Halo 3. Of course, the maps are shit so far but hopefully they'll have a legacy map pack at launch with older maps.
It should get a lot of post release support, it's Bungies last Halo game after all.

I think there should be some kind of measure against this, such as making flags in the stockpile untouchable for the team that owns the stockpile. That would eliminate the problem. People will do this a lot otherwise.

People are going to grief stockpile so bad. I can imagine some no life loser taking his team's flags out of the capture point right before the timer runs down to zero.

Uhh are we playing the same game? I've not once in the 20 or so games I've played killed someone in one clip of the pistol. It seems so damn weak especially with the ridiculous new health system that Bungie has put in place. I feel like the novelty has almost worn off already for me ... In 2 1/2 hours of playing. I have an enormous list of grievances with the beta already ... Not going to list them right now because I'm on my phone. One thing is for sure, Reach really needs to be rebalanced big time.

Oh and also why do melées feel so weak???

It's in the FFA playlist.

Well that would explain it. I've been all Team, all de time. On a related note, I know I've said it before, but the Active Roster and especially Queue Join are awesome.

Since all you jerks got in by abusing a poor, helpless Microsoft site, do I even need to put up some games on YouTube :p

Pistol really is a skill weapon, especially with the small clip. Good luck playing on a high sensitivity in this game

Thx for the HUGE response re: Halo: Reach Beta codes! Our limited supply has been depleted. Halo 3: ODST owners - pls dnld beta on May 3rd

No way ; ; The one time the site is actually helpful for retail people and this happens :lol

Guess i've got to wait. Could've just sent the email to whatever your expert zone account was.

Woot! I'm home from work but just for a few minutes and have to leave for a birthday dinner party. Plan on playing later tonight though. Download isn't too slow and 1.15 gigs.

i can't show this game too much love. the guns are too inaccurate compared to the old BR and the grenade fest is really annoying to say the least

The time in between scoring for stockpile needs to be increased. Since you walk sooo slow, it's impossible to steal the other team's flag(s) and get them all the way back to your capture point in under a minute.

It takes forever to kill someone too.

I can't wait to play this come May 3rd but it seems like a lot of the changes I've been hearing regarding the weapons are things I would actually like. Barring the interface changes (that will probably need tweaking based on these impressions), I think I'll really like the change of pace that Reach is taking. Of course, I'll have to see when I get to actually play the game.

Hmm well I don't know where else to post this, but it seems I have an extra Starcraft 2 Beta Key. If anyone has a Reach key (Extra or not) that they wouldn't mind trading I'm open to such an offer :D PM me.

Hey Cuban Leg- Thanks for the double. Good games, I'm tagging my things "gaf" just because I can in-game. The beta, its super awesome.
No prob bro, it's all in good clean fun! :{P Everyone on my team was laughing their ass off when I ran out there and all of a sudden half our team was dead. :)

Just got to Sergeant. :D

Seriously, I'm in love with this game. The menus are so damn smoov.
Had some awesome FFA and 4v4 games with you, Ssparks, PennyBags and Gui PT...

I always felt sorry (& secretly LOLed) when I would accidentally/randomly go into an assassination on a certain enemy GAFer and he'd yell out "OH, COME ON!" :)

Good times. And what's best is... there's more good times to come! :D

Ok I give up, time to make a list. My problems with the beta:
-reticule zooming out just doesn't seem fair with the pistol. I can understand with the DMR and sniper but not the pistol, especially with the tiny clip it has.
-pistol seems incredibly weak, as does the needled rifle.
-the health system doesn't really make logical sense to me. Why can't I kill someone with no shields with a single headshot anymore?
-melée system doesn't work. The hold for 3rd person assassination is too short... I find myself using it when I don't mean to.
-super shield thing can be held for too long
-camo cooldown is way too short
-grenade launcher is impossible to use
-elites + roll + hammer = the hell was Bungie thinking?
-veto system in the beta makes it so that I will never play oddball, koth or swat
-sword base is just a bad map ... Too damn vertical
-why is there no entrance to the main base on the ground floor in powerhouse?
-the height that you can jump feels a little off
-roll for elites should be cut down to one roll per recharge
-why are shotguns back? They add nothing constructive to the game
-melée lunges seem too sporadic - sometimes they work sometimes they don't
-assist medals never seem to register properly

And those are my grievances. For those of you who are about to bite my head off, for every bad thing on that list, there's at least one good thing. Didn't feel like typing up the good stuff list.

After playing the Beta since 8:00am PST until 7pm PST with only a one hour break in-between, I have this to say:

Good

The Pistol. What an AMAZING weapon. It really aleviates the stress of having AR starts knowing you have a reliable buddy in your back pocket at all times.

Sprinting. Such a useful, quick and vital Armor Ability.

Evade. Enough said.

DMR. Great replacement for the BR. :)

Needle Rifle. Perfectly compliments the DMR even though it requires an extra shot or two because its accuracy seems to be better than the DMR's.

Assault Rifle. Hate to say it, but this is actually a good weapon in Reach. Burst firing really makes a difference here (I was getting some SERIOUS range with this while burst-firing)

Bad/Don't like/Fuck it

Grenades. I don't know if it's because of the small maps we're forced to play on until May 7th or the grenades themselves, but man they're fucking powerful. It's good that they're much stronger than Halo 3's, but they don't have to be THIS strong.

Armor Lock and Active Camo. These two Armor Abilities are uselss, imo. Armor Lock just makes you a sitting duck where I can just spam nades or wait for you to get out of it to destroy you and Active Camo seems uselss other than its radar jamming abilities. I *always* spot the Camo guy.

The UI. Not only is the font size for the text that appears on the left-hand side too small, but the reticules for certain weapons are too transparent which make it hard to tell how much it's blooming, most notably for the Pistol.

Jaggies. Seriously, what the fuck?

Iffy On

Jetpacks. When a map compliments it, it works great (SwordBase), but on a map like Powerhouse, it's too cheap. I don't want people gaining unfair heights on me and even spawn camping me from ridiculous places just because they flew there.

Overall I'm very happy with Reach. Sage did a great job and lived up to what he tried to accomplish. Hopefully he can do the same for Modern Warfare 3.

I'll say that I haven't really put much time, if any, into Halo 3 or ODST multi but since this afternoon when grabbing the beta I've been hooked until..well I just got off. :lol Made even more of a riot when a buddy jumped online with a key and had a blast.

My only gripe was having to play the same matches all the time. Grab bags consisted of either CTF or Stockpile on Powerhouse or Headhunter on Sword Base, everyone kept skipping over the other matches. I gather the other modes and maps will be unlocked Monday then?

Old shield effects need to return. I often have no fucking idea if I'm hitting the guy or not because the new effect is so faint.

Besides that, from the brief time I've had to play, I'm liking it. But GOD have I lost alot of skill since going to college :lol

Also why is there no option for DMR starts? This is a major problem for gametypes like 1 Flag on Powerhouse when the team on offense keeps getting spawned with only an AR and a pistol and the defense team can pick up a ton of power weapons off the spawn. It's really difficult to win a cross map battle against a DMR or needle rifle when all you have is a pistol.

help me GAF, I'm a grenade spammer. I dont mean to do it, I'm trying to quit, but when a guy is closing in and he shot first or I feel like I'm going to die I cant help myself. how do I wean myself off this despicable habit?

I love the game, but there's still lots of work to do in the polish side, specially on the HUD and menu UI. I hope Bungie is listening to all the small complaints. The text is too small and not clear enough sometimes, noise filter doesn't help in the menus.

And those jaggies, wtf Bungie, all the hard work improving the visuals for it all to seem meaningless because the jaggies still make it look similar to halo 3.

Armour Lock and Invis need nerfing, they're getting abused already.

Still, I'm having blast.

I think you kids are safe. Obviously, its most likely all automated and there are no MS cops coming after people despite what the Bungie forums think.

Have fun.
