Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Wow, this beta is truly great, too bad my body needs to sleep. So annoying when you are with teammates who do not know how Stockpile works. Came also across BladedExpert, had some games with him.

Seems like Halo: CE tossing to me for Reach. You can toss the things across the map if you want.

I'm loving armor lock personally, not a fan of the jet pack.

I'm assuming if their is a big map the jet-pack could be a good reconnaissance load-out before they get to the sniper. Also, can help you if you have the sniper to sniper across the map.

Nevermind, looks like you had to use some kinda link to access your code...yet the link is down. Guessing a ton of people just signed up and bombarded the site?

correct, if it is anything like earlier the code site should be back up within 1-2 hours

Enjoying it a lot more than I did Halo 3 on first impression. I love the weapons, I love the flow. DMR in particular feels exactly like how I had hoped it would.

You should go check it out yourself.

When I played h3 beta I thought it felt like more of the same. But Reach feels fresh to me, I like it.

Bungie needs to fix the color of the zone indicator in stockpile on Powerhouse.

too many halo 3 lovers in here... btw sword base ftfw!!!!!!!!

only acceptable suggestion is the 4 shot kill dmr/pistol
IMO the pistol would be too good if it was any stronger, even giving it 2 more bullets per clip is pushing it.

I really like sword base, beyond the fact that it's visually sterile and lacks any noteworthy geometry.

Oh, and I haven't read back through the thread yet, but has Bungie made any mention of the awful motion blur?

Few things off the top of my head:

-Team SWAT is awesome now, feels like you have more of a chance/more skill based with the DMR/Pistol.
-Motion blur was super horrible at first, but I got used to it after a game or so. Still needs to be dialed back a bit.
-Stockpile is awesome.
-Swordbase is a horrible, horrible map for anything not Slayer, and even then it's debatable. One Flag on it is absolutely horrendous.
-I actually like Covy Slayer, plays very differently since everyone's rolling out of danger.
-The HUD can be kind of confusing; I never even look at my health/shields since it doesn't seem to be helpful and it's out of the way. Also your Stockpile HUD can be confusing, I swear sometimes I can't see Neutral flags, and deliving your flags to a Blue base when you're Red team is sometimes confusing.

Overall everything feels like it has more "weight" to it then Halo 3 did (not as floaty), but you'll adapt pretty quickly, I stopped fucking up buttons after 3 or 4 games.

hi bungie, its subrock here. Hey, if you guys wouldnt mind, could you differentiate the colors on the red and blue elites a little more. covie slayer is confusing.

all the best,
subrock.

Oh god this is so right. Fuck Swordbase.

First game this morning was with a bunch of TTL kids... yuck.

Grenades need a good nerfing, like... yesterday. Jesus Christ. Sage said he though Halo 3 nade spamming was bad and they'd tone it down for Reach? Was he just being sarcastic?

Not sold on the DMR/Pistol/NR reticule bloom, it makes this hitscan weapon feel more inconsistent than the Halo 3 BR. I realize you need to slow the trigger pulls to shoot more accurately, but when it comes down to no shield vs no shield it's often best to just pull the trigger first and hope the reticule decides it's your lucky day.

And so many fucking simultaneous shoots. I've experienced it a total of 6 times in the 20-something games I've played. The DMR is hitscan, why is it giving us both a kill/death?

And another thing, the pistol's clip needs to be increased, what's it at now? Like 8, when it takes 5 or 6 shots to take someone down? I'm lukewarm about the ranged weapons taking so many shots, haven't played enough to decide if I like it better that way, but the pistol needs a few more bullets in the chamber.

I've had to switch to default because the power of the grenades means you really have to stay off the ground and 50% of the map palette right now it the jetpack-riden Swordbase.

Anyways, enough ranting. There's a lot of awesome things about the game. Many thing people already mentioned so I'll just pick my personal highlights:
Covie slayer - awesome, I know it makes less sense fictionally but it'd be better if it were frag starts with magnum sidearms.
SWAT - really enjoying it. The spread of the DMR & pistol make it frustrating sometimes but as long as you're nailing those first shots it's great.
Sprint - good stuff
Evade - love it

Taking a short break and I'll be on later for some more.

I don't get it. At one point did Bungie get together and say "Swordbase is awesome"?

God this map sucks.

Hey, guess what, guys. if you like using armor lock or invis, fuck you. Swordbase is going to suck.

Seriously? Clip it and File Share it, I'll render for you.

I'm also confused at commendations. I know I got several, and they're on my stats page, but they don't really explain themselves.

I also don't like Armor Lock at all. It's waaaay overpowered, I think. But maybe that's because I keep getting killed by it and I can't get kills with it :P

And I partly agree with Dirtbag on assassinations. Basically, I've been unable to pull them off often, and they look pretty cool, but I think they're just superfluous and they do end up in some glitchy animations. I don't think they should be taken out, I just won't use them. I'll backsmack like A REAL MAN.

Speaking of covie slayer I just had my first game, rolling is awesomesauce.

I need practice with that needle rifle though, can't hit shit with it.

Just noticed something... wanted to see if others have experienced it as well.

As soon as started stock pile, we all had a little speed boost (no, I wasn't using the sprint load out) for a short period of time. O_O

buncha tj's abusing the focusing riffle against randoms in matchmaking, so i used a pistol

Who's HsitH? I just played you. Your tag was NGAF.

Just played team territories and it ends too quickly, also our team won and I earned a whopping 32 points or something :lol need to raise the total score count I think.

Its late so I'll just say this: Reach is fun. Netcode is really good (so far). Stockpile is great. Pistol is sex. <3 Sprint!

To all the gaffers I've run into tonight - GG

Time for bed

I love how everyone is bitching about balance this and nerfing that after playing for what, 2-3 hours? :lol

Granted I haven't played it personally, but usually with games like this it can take a while before you start understanding how the sandbox works and how to counter different things with others.. then you can start to see how balanced it is.

:lol I know the site will be back up soon, but it seems like it's taking forever. Wish I knew you had to go to a separate site from the start (the email or test said nothing about it).

I don't...get the health system. Beyond the fact that, like I pointed out previously, the HUD doesn't naturally fall into my vision and I have to "look" at it to see my health/armor, i'm just never tempted to go out of my way to find health. I don't know, maybe i'm doing it wrong.

I came up with a pretty easy strat if you're having trouble on Sword Base CTF. First go to 4q Base (a grey room). Have a teammate go 67e4 Dining Room. Have another teammate go 85g6 Hospital Cafeteria and start spamming nades. If you grab flag and bring it to 7r Lava Lamp (near the grey wall that leads to 81c5 Baltimore Crack House) you'll have an easy cap every time.

I know I've posted nothing but complaints so far, just things I need to get off my head:

I posted earlier that the connection bar is a LIAR. Not sure about anyone else, but it always reports full/nearly full connection for me and there is no way that's correct by Halo 3 (or any other game) standards.

I played a game of Team SWAT and I was really looking forward to it due to the DMR hitscan. I figured it would put me at less of a disadvantage playing against Americans across the ocean. Well it doesn't seem to work at all like I expected it to. I shoot a guy in the head and I can visibly see his head jerk back as the shot hits him but 4/5 times I won't get a kill for it, and have to keep shooting.

Words can't express how disappointed I am in the DMR. It's so weak, it's sad.

I thought it couldn't get any worse than the Halo 3 BR. I was wrong, very wrong. :lol

le sigh

Got excited about the email, now I come home to realize my dreams of playing the beta are smashed by an overzealous Halo fanbase :lol :lol :lol

And the moral of the story? Never underestimate the halo fanbase, ever. I can't be too mad about exploits I guess :D

On a serious note, anyone know if the beta link will ever come back up? The worst part about all this is I passed the ODST test on the expert zone last week, figures.

I love the DMR. Favorite weapon right behind the sniper. It may feel week because your shooting it too fast. Try to slow down on the shots because when you shoot as fast as possible it may look like it's hitting it really isn't.

I just did this today - about 4 hours ago - and it worked fine. I had to use a Hotmail email address, though.

Just bought ODST for this.

Wondering if it is confirmed the DMR is a single shot rifle only?
Or can it shot in bursts.
Single shot. You can simulate bursts by spamming the trigger like Eazy, but don't expect to hit anything that way.

What I wouldn't give for a 2 flag map. Some thoughts:

* I don't mind Sword Base, though it is much better suited for Territories than 1 Flag.
* I haven't even seen Headhunter yet, let alone played it.
* After more play time, I'm a little disappointed in the DMR. It feels ill suited for the 2 maps available right now, since it lends itself to longer range combat. It should be blissful on Overlook and Boneyard though.
* The Needler Rifle is wonderful though.
* I've heard talk that there's a Grenade Launcher on Powerhouse, but I have yet to see it.
* The Focus Rifle is very cool, and any fears about it being overpowered can be put to rest.
* The new melee system feels great. No more guessing about if you'll kill some one with a smack.
* Armor Lock is annoying as all holy hell.
* I feel like I haven't experienced all the awesome of Stockpile. I usually just go for flags then protect our zone. I still haven't tried being a Flag Pest.
* I really need to start changing Loadouts to match the situation. No more Camo when the flag is 3 stories up on Sword base.
* I still hate Covy Slayer. This may have something to do with my completely irrational feeling that using Evade is tantamount to cheating. This only seems to last during the game, as immediately afterward I think, "I should have used Evade more." I think I've used it 3 times total in 5 games.
* I still hate Swat, though slightly less than I did in Halo 3.
* I think vhfive is gonna marry the hammer. Dude's a beast with it.

Played a Stockpile game where some asshole on my team was camping our flag room, so when we did the hard work and brought the flags to our base, he would pick up the flags and steal our captures. What a dick. I found out what he was doing so I held one of the flags until the counter went down to make sure I get the credit and the asshole team kills me.

I took the test the other day, use gmail here. I got an email today saying "Get your ODST beta code here!" from the expert zone email, go the site which seems down, then check GAF :lol

So how did you get the code exactly? I retook the test just now, and no mention of a beta key anywhere, should I wait for an email, or is the system broken?

More UI issues (sorry :P)

-If you have X amount of loadouts, loadouts won't always be in the same spot all the time (per gametype, I guess?) For example, if you have 4 loadouts, sometimes Airborne is #3 on the list and sometimes its #4

-At the end of a round, whatever loudout you were using the previous round won't hold over. It goes back to defaulting at the #1 loadout, which is annoying.
