Halo: Reach Beta Thread

My current k/d for Reach is actually better than my weekly k/d has been for a while in Halo 3 (~1.35 over ~1.20), although not as high as my social k/d is in 3. But really, comparing ~100 games with a limited player pool to 3,000 with potentially millions isn't fair.

The massive "spoiler" has potential, but that's all it has. I'll just go on pretending as if I never read it, and if an announcement follows in the next few months, then I'll get excited.

Only vaguely related, and I don't know why it took me this long: someone pointed out that Overlook has "ammunition" stockpiles the Spartans can visit... so does Firefight. Further suggestion, if any was needed, of what "Network Test 1" is really about.

I'd like to see them remove the EMP effect for touching/meleeing someone. As it is you can just pop Armour Lock for an instant at close range and then come out and smack someone down at your leisure, and there's pretty much nothing they can do (although EazyB owning the sword dude with it was awesome). Keep the EMP blast at the end, obviously.
Welp. It just happened to me. Yeah, that needs to be removed.

Could have sworn I seen a few "ammunition" stockpiles on Boneyard on some of the Invasion videos - I distinctly remember the Rockets and Lasers in one single cache.

The melee system in this beta is truly wretched.

If somebody only has a sliver of shields left, then it should take out the shields AND deal at least SOME damage to their health.

Right now the system basically just rewards whoever waits the longest to melee, and CQC battles are crappy because of it.

It's pretty frustrating. I've just been trying to keep my distance in battle now. That's not how I'm used to playing halo though, I've always been for CQC.

I remember seeing a rocket and laser beside each other, yeah, but I can't remember if it had the little "Ammunition" flag next to it. Overlook also has those weapon drops, where "Ordnance" arrives on the map, and the announcer's snippet for it sounds uncannily like the same one from Firefight in ODST.

Plus the map is basically designed Firefight style, with a base overlooking rows of barricades and cover for besieging troops. It doesn't look like it would be serviceable for many multiplayer modes except "Generator Defense". And tell me you can't see squads of grunts trotting up that hill toward you!

The melee system in this beta is super awesome.

If somebody only has a sliver of shields left, then it makes sense that shield should be taken away completely before damage to their health occurs.

Right now the system rewards whoever is playing in the calmest and most considered way, and CQC battles are super awesome because of it.
Thoroughly fixed your post!

Massive spoiler.

Take your party to combat and objective-based missions that you select and design. Your rules, your maps, your game.

Holy shit. Unbelievable if true.

Wow, never seen that before. Right, time to give it a read.

Mind blown everywhere. :lol I can't wait.

New info is really nice. :D I don't feel like spoiler tags are necessary, though. All I want to stay dark on are explicit story details, ala "zomg 343GS turns on you and kill Johnson!!1!" But I love to read about weapons, vehicles, and features that will appear.

My weapon stats:

<3 the DMR and Nerfle so so much. And hammer is up there thanks to Powerhouse+Sprint. It may not be the most fair combo, but slamming people that way is fun, and having someone sprint at you with the hammer is frightening.

Yes.

And the fact that it's limited to two player split-screen...

wow. i highly recommend that everyone spends some good time in theater if they haven't already. that's where you can really see the crazy level of armor detail and appreciate the animations. if this is what we're getting with MP, I'm super pumped for the campaign.

Agreed :lol

If even half this stuff is true, Halo: Reach is going to be the most feature-dense and customizable first person shooter (out of the box, at least) ever made. Certainly on consoles, as the PC titles that surpass it have SDKs and out-of-game toolsets.

Really. You think that a melee that typically does anywhere from 20-25% shield damage should only do 1-2% shield damage and NOTHING else, just because the shield is just barely there at the time the melee makes contact?

Its ridiculous.

BTW, the only reason I posted these spoilers is because I hoped I could ensure we all stick to the spoiler policy of covering them up in posts - regardless of their accuracy.

Everything finds it's way unto GAF eventually and it'd be unfair for someone to hop into this thread and see information they didn't want to see without warning.

Some of that stuff, if true, are massive spoilers and could potentially ruin a surprise or two for some folks, so please ensure the proper use of
tags.

Anyone want to get a GAF 4-man or full 8 going? I'm going to get everything going and just hang out in the lobby for awhile.

With a great advantage: user generated content is available right through the game.

Which isn't the case with pc titles. Lots of content; though not always easily reachable (pun semi-intended).

After I'm done playing my league games in the Show I'll join you.

Also to the people complaining about the melee, after you melee someone do you melee again or shoot them? Because it shouldn't matter either way. If you melee them again then why on earth are you complaining that the first melee doesn't take away any health when the second melee will kill them? Also if you shoot them after the first melee do you shoot them in the head? Because I know when I shoot someone in the head and their shields are gone it will kill them. I really don't understand the complaints about the new system.

Well the small spoiler that everyone is freaking out over is MP. The big list apparently has Campaign spoilers, but I don't see anything for campaign except for skulls. *shrug*

It would be sweet if after the beta ended sketch and co. released a beta postmortem podcast talking about the feedback they got, and some notable tweaks they've already made to the beta.

I also want to echo the problems with the pistol (and sometimes AR) reticule being too light. I'm playing on a 32" lcd, and while it's not gamebreakingly terrible, it'd be nice to see it darkened, or perhaps add an option to adjust reticule opacity.

Assuming the person you're meleeing isnt an idiot, he'll continue shooting while you melee him, so you're still taking damage. If you melee him, take damage during the melee, take damage during the 'cool down' after the melee animation and then immediately get meleed back, you're dead.

I just wait for people to melee me, and then melee them back. 100% success rate. Stupid.

And it'll all be for naught without decent playlist integration!

One thing Lars did tell me is already addressed for final game: incessant flag/ball announcer spam. Woot! If I never hear ball dropped again I'd be happy :)

Also must just be me and perhaps a large tv but I honestly haven't had any of the UI issues many here have describe.

Forgot to mention, but good game playing against you two days ago. :)

Well, if Ske7chys was you, anyway

So what exactly is wrong with your situation then? You go to melee someone and they continually shoot you which lowers your shields and then they melee you to kill you. I see nothing wrong with that situation.

I have no idea how anyone can like the assault rifle. People have it as their highest kills? wtf. The thing gets beasted by the pistol every day of the week.
I would love the pistol if I could actually see the crosshair. And I'm playing on a 50" screen.

Because if my melee actually did a bit of health damage in addition to the 1-2% shield damage (to break their shields), I would actually be rewarded for using the attack.

At this rate, like I said, I just always wait for them to melee first, respond with a melee, and get an immediate win. And I'll be doing it ALOT from now on, because I have a -42 K/D with the melee to cover.

Its stupid.

EDIT: Wow, I guess Im not the only one jumping back and forth between the boards and the beta (Dax and Ghal). :lol

My bro is using the slingbox to watch the NHL playoffs in England. I should be back online after the Pens game if you're still playing.
