Halo: Reach Beta Thread

For every single thing someone bitches about, there's another one that loves it. I wonder how Bungie can manage to make anything out of that noise.

If Bungie addresses every complaint I've read in this thread, we're gonna end up with a futuristic take on Second Life.

Why do I have a feeling that many of the "new fans" you're talking about are people who have been waiting since the first game for a fresh take on the series?
I'm glad people are coming back, new players are joining, and all of them are loving it, but I'm just asking that they let us halo players that kept on playing all this time and are accustomed to a certain style of game, to have our space too, other than the MLG playlist.

Beta Thoughts:

  • The Loadout selection screen takes way too long. It doesn't take me 10 seconds to decide, and it breaks up the action too much. Watch a saved film to see what I mean. Long stretches of black screen are not fun.
  • There should be a setting to save your preferred Loadout(s) so my favorite is already pre-selected at the beginning of each game.
So...anybody agree/disagree? Has this already been addressed?

Its funny, when you hear people moan about Grenades, then people say they are fine. Or that the DMR is awesome but others think it sucks. In my head that is sounding like Bungie have made some really balanced stuff that requires a certain amount of ability to use correctly.

Yes its not perfect and there are things to sort but the majority of times I have died, thrown profanities at my TV and then carried on playing, its usually my fault for sucking so bad. :lol

In the early days I found that it did not stay there long enough and I would spawn with something I did not want. Maybe they should have it that as soon as you pick, you can spawn.

I would love a default load-out option and I can press X to change it when I die if required.

completely agree on the default loadout idea... even though i do like to cycle between a few depending on the map, game mode, and play style of the opposing team.

i'd imagine they are focusing on players whose opinions matter and obviously "get" what type of game halo is and what they are aiming for.

I actually think the loadout time needs to be a little longer in some cases, I've missed my chance to change loadouts more often than not.

The second point I'd agree with though, as it would partly solve my problem with the first point. :lol

I think it is this long because you can (or at least eventually will be able to) press up/down on the d-pad to pick someone to spawn on.

So is there any way to customize the loadouts or do I have to spawn everytime with the AR?

As of now, no. In some of the demos that were shown, specifically the one narrated by Luke Smith, different loadouts will have different AAs and weapons. This can somewhat be seen in Slayer Pro. You can choose to start with DMR or Needle Rifle.

How does matchmaking suck? (without comparing it to a server browsing model please)

and :lol at thinking armor lock is useless. You're doin' it wrong!

Sai, babe. I've been over this over and over and over on GAF. I'm the type of person that doesn't need my hand held to find games. If I want to play a particular map with a particular mode, I should be free to be able to. If I want to play Team Swat on DE_Sidewinder 24/7 game server/console servers, that should be my choice.

As it is: Halo Reach's MM is by far the best implementation of the service for Halo BY FAR. No longer am I forced in a game mode (++ Bungie for doing this) I don't want (well with the exception of Slayer, PLZ 2 B PUTTING THAT SHIT IN IT'S OWN PLAYLIST, BUNGIE). Now it's only maps that I'm being forced into (a step back from Halo 3's vetoing a map system, but I guess that would take too long with Reach veto/voting for a gametype as well), but that isn't too bad as I have no opinion on the Reach maps yet.

And yes, the Armor Lock is useless. It's useless in Deathmatch/Slayer and Team Slayer esp. You can pop-it up, but anyone that is smart is going to wait for you pop-out, throw a grenade as you're doing that and kill you (which has been 90% of my deaths/kills to Armor Lock). May be better for vehicles (as it's supposed to be able to destroy an oncoming vehicle?), but so far in terms of infantry it's pretty "yeah, no, I'll stick with active camo, crouch and then melee dudes."

>>DMR sucks<<

I have to agree with this camp. I want the battle rifle and it's fast fire rate back. How am I supposed to play SWAT with this weapon, Bungie? :( :lol

yeah, IMO the DMR is too slow.

The weapons in general are just pretty "meh." They are either re-hashes of classic Halo weapons, but with new names, or copies of each other.

For example, the DMR is just a slower and prettier version of the pistol. Rate of fire alone doesn't really justify an entirely new weapon, IMO.

It's a nuclear blast flash shadow of Bungie's ODST Piggy Bank.

Does anyone know if there is a Hammer on Boneyard, or if it is included in an Elite Weapon Drop? I am planing to test the new Grifball physics with some league players.

Holy shit what is this huge thread about pistol shit, the op complains about it being too strong compared to real world guns :lol and then others are saying it needs to be stronger along with the dmr and ar...

I hope bungie weed out shit like that when they take beta notes.

I personally think having the pistol as it is, is a huge throwback to halo CE, I don't want to see it being the beast it was back then but now if you use it well, it treats you well.

Armor lock is useless now?
The way you guys describe it's use certainly does sound useless, but where most of us that are complaining about it, see problems is in the quick pop usage - particularly in close range melee combat. If you are playing against a smart player with armor lock, they'll pop it for a split second when you go to melee them, which instantly drops YOUR shields instead, and with the zero recovery time they kill you instantly when they return fire. When you quick pop an armor lock, you get tons of use out of it instead of the long charges.

Actually you don't. Every short burst causes an EMP blast. This blast takes off a good chunk of the gauge. Yes, you can use it in short bursts, but only a limited number of times.

Yea i agree with the DMR sucking, I will always choose needle rifle over it.

I've touched the needle rifle about two times. And both times I didn't get it. Didn't Bungie say that it was supposed to be able to be charged or something like that? (Or is it another "Elite" weapon that I'm thinking of? Plasma Cannon?) It's like a slower, single-shot needler. :/ Ho-hum. It seems to do more damage per-hit than the needler, but why go with that? *shrug*

The plasma cannon, meanwhile: Fucking awesome. It has a charge time (unless you can fire it before then?) and an auto-aim type system/lock-on. The person locked on can move into cover (and avoid the shots), but if they don't... It's a total powerhouse.

When you quick pop an armor lock, you get tons of use out of it instead of the long charges.

I have yet to run into that, but it does sound crazy stupid (and more useful) than the armor lock is right now. As for the long charge time, that's what makes it useless for me. I can go into an armor lock, and avoid dying for about twenty seconds. However, popping out (and a dude waiting near me) doesn't seem to damage a dude or anything like that. Armor Lock would be more useful in CTF if (IMO) it did stun/damage to someone in the area (small area) of the charge.

Also I've had grenades break my shield + kill me while in the armor lock, WTF?

TheSeks - you do understand that it's ridiculous to ask or expect server browsing in a Halo game when Bungie single handedly pioneered a nearly industry wide migration over to TrueSkill matchmaking and Hopper style map selection, right?

The reason for automated matchmaking is so that players are matched with players of similar skill. And... as soon as a system matches players with similar skill automatically, that system also has to automatically choose maps and gametypes (or give the players a narrow list of options) in order to ensure that everyone gets a chance to play something they enjoy.

They can't implement a matchmaking system, and a server browser system in tandem because it fractures the player base, and matchmaking works best with a larger pool of players.

So... I'm not sure why people keep wanting to see server browsing in Halo games. It's never going to happen.

The Needle Rifle (Nerfle) can do the same damage as the DMR in 5 shot kills. The real advantage of using the Nerfle loudout is team instances because you can get the super combine (like the Needler). Or are you talking about the Plasma Repeater?

I don't know if I'm remembering this correctly or not, but didn't someone say that the Needle Rifle bloom is faster to 'shrink' than the DMR?

If by tons of use he means just overall better usage and not the amount of time then it makes sense to use it in short bursts. Use it to take down shields of people who rush and then quick melee them.

i AGREE 100%. I always chalk this up to Bungies ego. "We worked hard on that so you have to play it". But if I don't want to play it what are my choices Bungie? Go some where else, maybe? I did that with Halo 3 and and traded it in 3 months after purchase and I'll do it again if Reach starts to grate the nerves. So far I'm just chalking it up to it being a beta and will wait on final judgement.

It's not, but the bloom doesnt expand as much with each shot, so you can hammer out four shots to kill shields faster.

Plus, you can keep hammering an extra three for a combine kill, instead of taking that extra second to wait for the bloom and line up a headshot.

I personally think the NR is great. I'll usually swap it for the DMR if I come across one, but if I've just spawned Ill swap out of the pistol for the better mid-range weapon.

Yea i would think so, Accuracy with the Needle rifle is so easy compared to the DMR.

Yes, and I hated it in Halo 3/2/ODST/whatever then. I've been a patented hater of Matchmaking since the X-box Live original days. Nothing is going to change that. ;)

So... I'm not sure why people keep wanting to see server browsing in Halo games. It's never going to happen.

Mostly because some of us come from PC gaming where we have the ability to choose what map/mode we want to play and play with other like minded individuals.

I can't give a shit about "trueskill" or rank. I don't play ranked games, if I have the choice anyway. If people are raping me/team-auto-unbalanced, I'll find another server. No problem for me. *shrug*

No, I'm talking the Needle Rifle. I guess I'm too used/set in my ways with the needler and expect something that is based on it to be a needle assault rifle than a single-shot "needler."

I'm not going to swap the AR for a mid-range weapon and get caught in close-range with two mid-range weapons. That's just stupid.

I agree. That's why there's such things as custom games. Play a good team? Go to recent players and add them to your friends for future custom games. Rinse repeat and soon you'll have a friends list completely full of people who are down to hop in any custom game you want to play.

You could host your own games and invite friends with Halo 3 and you will be able to with Reach as well. Just not in the beta.

That's a horrible solutions to an (increasingly on consoles) prevalent problem. "You don't want to play Team Slayer in Action Sack? Go find other players and hope they'll be willing to play at the same time as you 24/7 for the modes/maps you want."

Edit: The way I see it:

Play now->Match making
Find a game/optimatch->Custom Server browser

That would be a decent solution. People that want to have Bungie/developers dictate what they can/can't play can go playnow. The rest of us that want to play a certain mode and not have to vote/veto maps/modes can "find a game."

(Hell, [not to bring it into Halo, but since we're having this discussion] Bad Company 2 basically does this with it's system. "Play Now"->FIND ME A GAME NOW DAMN IT, "Play a game"->Mode: Rush/Squad Rush/Deathmatch/Conquest/Rush or Conquest? Map:Any? or a particular one? Sure, the servers rotate and the maps change, but at least I can back out and then find another server that is playing that map again if I so choose)

All it needs is a Pistol secondary to be perfect.

Nah it needs pistol secondary and all other weapons to be removed from the map besides rockets. Get rid of that hammer!

And the DMR doesn't suck at all.

Something I keep forgetting to ask:

Does zooming and/or crouching artificially affect accuracy and/or damage in any way?

Well when you zoom in, it will make your target bigger, giving your reticule more area to be accurate (I guess you could think of this as making your reticule smaller, but it still stays the same size on your HUD).
