Halo: Reach Beta Thread

i get the impression that people badmouthing/being negative and speculating about reticule bloom/recoil havent actually played games with recoil.

Yeah people who play sci-fi alien games aren't the same people who play military games with ghillie suits and realistic recoil. You figured it out.

Anyone try out the waterslide in Powerhouse yet? It's so fun.

I didn't want Shadowrun: Halo Edition...:|

Just because the game has bloom does not mean it's still anything like Shadowrun. I'm just saying you won't see many people crouching all the time in a pistol fight because it removes your ability to dodge grenades and gunfire. The only time you will see it is at long range or when someone has the upper hand at the end of a long corridor.

It doesn't slow things down. If anything, the increased accuracy could make the game faster because it will mean more damage is being done everywhere.

reticule bloom owns.

that is all.

I see why Bloom was included in terms of RoF, and I understand the need to force weapons into theyre 'range'. Bloom affected by movement is not needed though - Halo is about movement, making the distinction between accuracy and movement in a Halo game is just not right in my opinion. It serves no 'need' and isnt fun, so why include it?

Im loving Reach, but crouching reducing bloom really has got the potential to slow down the game a lot when more people figure it out.

I've never liked "bloom".

I always liked SOCOM's method of displaying recoil over Ghost Recon's.

The reticule should point where your muzzle is pointing.

It seems like common sense to me...

*shrug*

You haven't added anything constructive to the conversation. You're just throwing out drive-by opinions without saying anything about them. Shut up you duck.

No, although I'll agree it's really hampered the ability of individual players to go clutch with multikills, etc.

Definitely. I just feel like the HaloGaf Super Awesome Exclusive Club are freaking out simply because it's not Halo 3 and every time someone brings up an argument they shoot it down because they weren't playing with them for 2 years and don't know maaaaaaaan.

(Hi Shake!) :D :D

He didn't die.

Yes...

He won the game.

Reminds me of this

we both had no shield running into that melee

I BELIEVE that happened before the halo 3 melee change..

its not because it has bloom that it feels like shadowrun, have you played shadowrun? Reach has an uncanny shadowrun feel, possibly because of the sprint, and the jetpacks

I honestly wonder if some employees of FASA had moved over to bungie, or maybe all of FASA was merged into a bungie subgroup, while the rest of bungie have been making this Activision game..

this is true, I shall bullet point my remarks!

  • Rectile bloom requires timing, but is still quite forgiving towards players
  • Many players have complained about the skill range in Halo being frequently diminished in each sequel; rectile bloom adds a layer of skill.
  • Despite rectile bloom being introduced, I have not seen an increase of players slowing down/stopping and because the system is so forgiving players are not hugely punished for moving.
  • crouching has benefit/loss system to it; do you stay still and get improved aiming, but become a stationary target and increase the chance of being seen or do you keep moving and have slightly harsher recoil?

Crouching won't be worth it, only at long range when someone doesn't see you.

Instead of having jump shots, now we will have crouch shots!
not to be confused with crotch shots

You are a duck! How are you even typing.

The more I play this game the more I love it.. I was on the "Granades are overpowerd" train before, but now I see that the problem is that you spawn with too many on normal game types. You see Slayer Pro, spawning with just 1 granade makes random granade throws very unlikely and you see people really saving them for the right time.

So my opnion is.. make all game types start with only 1 granade. Will solve the problem.

I like the bloom, might be alone in that one.

Can't stand fighting against people with armour lock though. Take out all their shields and they lock for 10 seconds, ugh. People have started to do short locks as well when they are down in a 1v1. Would be nice if they were vulnerable when coming out of lock, but they still can't be hit until they start moving. Am I right in saying shields recharge while in lock as well?

Apart from armour lock and the plasma launcher, I have few complaints. I'm really enjoying this game!

Wait, it's on waypoint?

Edit: I guess it is, didn't know that.

Am I the only one who likes the game (for the most part) the way it is right now?

I've been pleased with it in it's current state, and much more fun playing it then I ever did Halo 3. I'm sure Bungie will change some of it to improve balance and issues, but if this was release... I would be very satisfied.

I believe Sage and a few other Bungie employees are in fact from FASA. I think they discussed it a bit in a podcast?

Hey, I thought I had that down pretty well. Nobody steals my needless bitching on twitter and gets away with it! That or I'm just going to be passive aggressive.

Or whatever.

I fucking HATE how sometimes you just can't make the jump onto the ledge in the middle circle on Powerhouse. WHY CAN'T I MAKE THAT JUMP SOMETIMES?!?!?

I can never make that jump. And I'm 99.9% sure I complain about it every time I play Powerhouse. :lol

Sage definitely is. Not sure who, if anyone else is.

Arena isn't that appealing to me. I thought I would enjoy it, but it's not my thing. Just basic slayer, not really fun anymore. 2 more days...

Nah it needs pistol secondary and all other weapons to be removed from the map besides rockets. Get rid of that hammer!

And the DMR doesn't suck at all.
All of this is cold truth.

Edit: actually, just get rid of the hammer. The rest, especially the pro pipe, can stay.

Pistol to me is the old, trusty BR and the Needle Rifle is my new DMR. :P

Can't wait for Invasion so we can finally try out Reach's vehicles and I get mah Operator Loadout.

Indeed. Don't think I've had a time yet where I feel like I got killed because of bullshit with the game. The reticule bloom doesn't bother me at all. I'm a Shadowrun veteran, so that might be why. But I think it adds something new to the game. The Halo gameplay needed to evolve. It's certainly more "Halo" than the class-based game that it was rumored to be originally.

Urgh, when you start doubting yourself Reach is brutal, sorry for my not great callouts today Chapel - think I need to try and get some sleep so I'm more on the ball tomorrow night.

If this is true...just wow. I love Shadowrun but get that junk out of my Halo. I'm going to get myself a pair of scissors and go beard hunting brb.

i think people are hugely overreacting. if you havent noticed it yourself, whats the issue? you wouldnt even have known if it wasnt for urk saying so.

it likely just decreases the amount of time for the bloom to return to the optimal size for accuracy

I'm shaving in the morning, honest (I have a job interview). Stay the fuck away from me with those!

Slayer Pro needs Pistol secondary, and pretty much every other weapon removed from the map aside from Rockets/Snipers. Swordbase is infuriating when the other team gets Shotgun and Sword and camps the top, ugh.

Agree with this, and believe me, I admit to being one those people who gets a hold of the shotgun and waits to shoot you in the face when I hear you come up that lift :lol

I got literally 4 kills in like 15 seconds just crouching there waiting and kept thinking "How the fuck did the guy who designed this map not realise this was going to happen?"

I'm actually MORE surprised it doesn't happen more often.

But see while many in here are complaining, I actually like the direction Reach is taking. I'm aware it sucks for the 'experts' but Reach really does level the playing field for those of us who aren't as good as some of you, like myself.

I don't feel anywhere NEAR as useless as I did in Halo 3, and I enjoy it pretty much for that reason alone. Seems like maybe that's what Bungie were aiming for?

For the firs time ever in a Halo game, I had a guy on my team ask how I got so good at Reach :lol My response was "What?!? me? I'm not good man, I'm fucking shit at Halo!! :lol "

So would it fair to assume that these are some universal changes people want to happen? (Gameplay changes listed only):

  • Slightly increase movement speed
  • Slightly increase jump heights
  • Restrict Jetpack to certain maps (ex: SwordBase, yes. Powerhouse, no.)
  • Decrease Focus Rifle's ammo
  • Decrease Rocket's splash damage
  • No sprinting allowed with the Hammer (not sure about the Sword, though)
  • Nerf grenade damage, but not its radius
  • More solid reticules (aka make it easier to see them)
  • Consistent and more forgiving reticule bloom (ex: if I fire this fast, the reticule will ALWAYS bloom the same way. Also, if an opponent and I are using the pistol at the same distance, he shouldn't be able to land his shots if he's spamming and I'm timing my shots. The reticule needs to be so consistent that we could almost memorize how big it'll get if we shoot this fast or this slow)
  • Reduce shield beeping warning sound to when shields are actually low. I don't want to hear the warning beep come when I've only been shot with one bullet.
  • Add a delay to meleeing when coming out of a sprint just like the weapon shooting delay is added when coming out of a sprint (your character automatically re-equips his weapon when coming off a sprint)

I hope Sage takes these changes to heart. I understand what he's trying to do with the sandbox of Halo: Reach, but there are things that can be improved on, changed or removed. Bungie always says they have to cut or change one thing to make the other one work even better whether it's a gameplay thing or a vehicle or a weapon or a feature so Sage, it's okay for you to do the same!

This is what is happening. ODST was similiar.

I love Halo Gaf. It's one of the best communities on the internet, but what certain people need to realize, is that you're not "True Halo Fans" simply because you played tons of Halo 3.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that all "Halo Fans" realize that this exact fucking thing happened with each new game in the series.

Halo 2 haters called themselves True fans, and anyone that played Halo 2 only did so because they had no skill. These dipshits believed themselves and their opinions to be superior because they could not accept change. Halo 2 went on to have a massive fanbase.

Halo 3 releases, and many of the Halo 2 fanbase refused to adapt. To these fuck faces, Halo 2 was the pinnacle of gaming, and Halo 3 was merely a shitty sequel developed for people with less skill. Halo 3 went on to have a massive fanbase (and still does).

Reach Beta....same fucking shit. Constructive criticism is great, but so many people delude themselves into thinking they are superior to "less skilled casual fans" to the point where we now see calls for major revision to the Reach gameplay (make it like Halo 3), we see whining about the most ridiculous things, and we see internet namecalling.

tldr: Know your Halo hater history. Don't be a tool and repeat it.

Also, I've never bolded so many words.

I really agree with most of that list. Though, I'd include the sword under the "no sprinting" rule.
