Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I'm a sprint user all the time in the arena. I might switch to armor lock during flag/territories type games.

Same here. I use armor lock for defense in CTF, and that's about it. I'm sure it's useful in other situations, but it just doesn't fit how I play.

You also won't see Shadowrun on my game history list, though I played it at FASA and played the demo quite a bit. Enough to make a few comparisons and notice some things carried over to Reach.

Like what ?

Unable to break 1587 overall tonight, had two good random matches and then like 3 in a row where my team sucked :lol some guy talking to his mate "are you leading your shots?" "yeah, fucking dmr sucks shit" :lol :(

Also why do I hear someone on my team saying "go pro man, go pro go pro" for the vote and then we get slaughtered, annoying idiot.

I must have entered the bizarro zone. Now people are telling lies and acting like they're the truth. All the countless times in the beta that I've traded pistol shots with an enemy while strafing must not have happened at all. That one time an enemy jumped over my head too without sprinting... It must not have happened either.

The needle rifle is all about firing needles into guys as fast as you can. Don't treat it like a normal sniper rifle. The actual hit damage isn't the key - it's the needle explosion that happens afterwards. The more you load them up with needles, the more damage the explosion does.

You should play some Team SWAT before you talk.
I actually agree with this complaint. I've been confused quite a few times in SWAT, seeing my shot impact some guy's helmet with no consequence. He keeps on running and I'm smh wondering what the hell went wrong.

Quick comparison:
- Vertical combat (glider/jetpack)
- Temporary user-initiated invulnerability (smoke/armor lock)
- "blocking" attacks (sword blocking sniper bullets/melee blocking sword)

Reach takes a lot from other games (Tribes, Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, etc.), but at its heart it's Halo. It looks like Halo and feels like Halo. I don't know what else people expect.

Honestly I'm surprised some of you aren't complaining about Bungie using a new engine, since you're so infatuated with the past games.

Eh, I treat it as a headshot weapon. I'm too impatient to time my shots with the DMR, and most of the time if I don't kill the person I'm shooting at, I'll at least drop their shields, and someone else will pick up the kill. Also it's pretty rare that I actually hit them three times in the body. There's a perfectly good unshielded head sticking out right there, might as well hit that once than waste time going for explosions.

Sprint will still be faster than default base player speed if it's sped up so it would still be useful. Also, don't know why people are complaining about jump height. Having faster speed will increase it by a tiny amount and that's good enough, much like CE was. Jet packs will still be useful as well.
Players enable the abilities for these mechanics. Why would they give an option for us to sprint if they had faster game speed? I think the speed now is fine; I'm accustomed with it because I use sprint as my ability primarily, at least outside Jetpack in occasional Swordbase games.

A Jetpack burst can easily help a play hop over a higher wall. Takes a second to do. Also for sprint, your momentum can carry you for longer jump distances and over pathways you wouldn't think of making with your everyday Halo speed (H3 included).

Small request. Can bungie make it so the Close Call medal doesn't pop up unless you actually survive? Like 1 or 2 seconds after you 'earn' it. And if you die in those 1 or 2 seconds, you don't get it. Just seems right.

I'm sure that I earned a close call once by shooting a rocket point blank into the enemy taking us both out :lol

Meh it tends to only happen if you started the confrontation while already low on health. Whether you die or not, the fact that you managed to kill the other guy before you died was a pretty close call.

Yeah, I get them all the time when I don't actually survive. It kind of defeats the purpose. I like getting them by the skin of my teeth. feelsgood.jpg

I noticed that shots to the head sometimes in SWAT do not kill. I actually think the hitbox is a little higher so I now aim slightly above the head and it works so much better. There also needs to be a covy slayer playlist in the full game.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about a few posts ago. Reminds me of Shattered Horizon almost, where you need to hit a player's visor to register a kill. From the side and around the chin area it seems to only do a little damage.

My only "wtf" moments online so far have come from SWAT games.

Both of my "wtf" moments have been on Powerhouse, where I CLEARLY hit someone with a hammer, and his shields just flare and he gets away clean.

Oh and this:

So what's the verdict on the gameplay of the beta? Can I get some detailed impressions. Also does it feel like halo enough?

Can't wait to try Invasion tomorrow. Only have to work 7am-12pm tomorrow so I have plenty of time to play. Also trying to grab some tickets to a The Dead Weather show in Baltimore that go on sale tomorrow so tomorrow could be a very good day for me.

Going to finish Halo: Uprising before bed tonight. Finally got around to getting it. Read the first half the other night, going to finish tonight.

It's exactly the opposite of everything Dax is saying.

This.

Seriosuly, if I want to moon jump and run like the Chief I'll play Halo 3. This is Reach. You can't jump as high. Get over it (pun intended)

Feels very much like Halo, with new stuff in it. There are of course some things that could need a bit of balancing and tweaking currently, but that's what the beta is for :)

I second this. Let's move the gameplay forward.
Indeed.

There's a difference between constructive feedback to tweak Reach's gameplay and fucking sobbing because it doesn't play like Halo. Leave the horse alone dudes.

Anyone looking to jump into the arena right now. I'm in the 1590's today after a couple of matches and will probably sit around the mid 1600's or so.

Seriously :lol

It's not like the feedback process is there for "true fans" to look at the game with some abject horror, mouths agape, and stare blinklessly at Bungie shaking their heads and mouthing "oh god, you've done it all wrong." It's different. That's the intent. It's like we learn nothing from our hobby; franchises like Guitar Hero and Call of Duty get derided for churning out samey sequels, but once it happens to the one you like, oh no, no, anything but that.

You actually don't even need to look at different franchises. Halo itself is a recurring example of this. Some crazed subset of fans from each of the games holds the last installment as the "right" one. Halo 2 had its haters
(me included)
, then Halo 3 followed suit by those weaned on 2's mechanics. Reach is no different.

We're like some kind of oblivious zombies following the same pattern over and over. Look at the Zelda series, that's another great example. New games get vocal detractors because of the inclusions that set them apart; this is how it happens. I don't get the whining.

It drives me fuckin nuts.

In other news: I'm about to get on for a few games. GT: everluck. Anyone
who agrees
is welcome to join me.

My skill level is somewhere between a lamprey and cro-magnon man.

Close Call is bugged in the beta. The functionality of this medal is revamped for ship.

Played Arena for the first time tonight with armubaba. We had some nice games on Powerhouse-- I fucking love that map. I'm even starting to enjoy Sword Base in a strange sort of way, even though I'm generally pretty terrible at it. Ended up with a rating around 1550; not sure how good that is (or isn't) but I'll take it.

I've started to get a better feel for the DMR and I absolutely love it. At this rate, it may well replace the BR as my favorite implement of destruction in Halo.

I've got the day off tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to spending some quality time playing Invasion. Can't wait. :D

So now it only is awarded to players who shout into the mic when in proximity to someone they are assassinating right???

Good stuff. I'm really looking forward to Invasion tomorrow :D Just went +28 some game, weapon of choice: DMR. Kicking ass.

+28 eh? Was wondering how you got that helmet. I can haz helmet hair?!

I kinda hopped on the Arena rank train a little late but has the division star been removed temporarily? I can't find a single player with that star anymore. Is it a bug perhaps?

ITT people who'll play Reach's MP for about a month then move onto the next "different/fresh" thing become experts at Halo.

I got my hopes up when I came up behind a guy holding my hammer in one and and the melee button on the other... then he pulls out a tiny knife? lol.

I blame it on the beta for now :p I want hammer assasinations.

Quick question about arena - I'm not trying to brag so I hope it doesn't come across that way...I was able to break 1700 in arena yesterday and was wondering if anyone else has done this.

Edit - 1700 in 1 game not my daily rank.

I thought there would be different animations depending on the weapon you're holding and all that, and as much as I would really love to see that, that is a lot of different animations to do and store in each map.

Ajemsuhgao said:
Actually, I'm not sure if things like that are in each individual map, or shared.map.

I would assume they'd be in shared, but I'm not sure.
I imagine te assassinations have nothing to do with the map really. Unless I read your post wrong... it's 4am after all :p
