Halo: Reach Beta Thread

What method are you using for the 5-shot DMR kills? Are you hammering out the first four shots as fast as possible and then waiting for the last shot, or shot-wait-shot-wait-shot...the whole way through?

I really like the DMR, but find it a little inconsistent. Im thinking it would be better as a four-shot (to differentiate it further from the magnum) but if 5-shot kills eventually become second nature, then doing so may make it overpowered.

Thanks!

Mid to close range I'm popping it at a pretty fast rate. I count my shots, make sure the shields pop, take a second and then finish the kill. I don't wait for the reticule to go all the way down but there definitely is a pause between the 4th and 5th shots. Even at long range you can shoot it pretty quickly. But you gotta wait to line up the last shot perfectly when the reticule shrinks. It's a lot of fun.

On the other hand, I've lost a lot of my accuracy with my magnum. Sometimes I can nail a 5 shot up close but from mid range I'm having difficulty landing the 5 shots. I'm also finding that if I run out of ammo in my magnum, switching to my AR to finish the kill is better than reloading my magnum. I've been finishing off more kills that way.

I also wanted to comment on the increased difficulty of multikills. I'm rarely getting multikills just from using my guns, like the magnum or DMR. In past Halo games I could get multikills from a single BR clip. The most you can do now with a DMR clip is 2. If I am getting multikills it's with the sniper or grenades. And of course Rockets and things like that. It could also be the map design though. Powerhouse while somewhat open is quite large and gives enemies a lot of room to run away from my DMR. Swordbase is kind of closed off and offers a ton of cover for players. We'll see how this plays out in the retail release. Maps have a lot of do with it.

Wow nades are SO overpowered. /sarcasm

I guess people like jumping all over the place like morons throwing frags that do jack shit all while spamming the trigger in an attempt to get a head shot. And if that fails, lag melee lunge until someone drops!

I'm sorry but Halo 3 was pretty shit. The netcode was shit, the nades were shit and it was just generally horrid to play.

Reach is quicker, guns and explosives do more damage and more importantly people actually DIE when they should. There are hardly any times now where you think, fuck, that guy should be dead WTF is going on with this pos game.

Yeah the nades do more damage but that's a good thing! There were plenty of times in halo 3 where you would throw a nade, it does fuck all, the enemy throws one and for some reason his actually works. At least now when you hurl a frag bomb you know someone will get fucked up.

The evidence proves it. Get a health pack, let your shields recharge and stop whining.

The game plays slower and the guns do less damage. Those are facts. That's how the game was designed.

+1

I played over 5000 games of Halo 2 and only about 1500 of Halo 3. Halo needed changing and it got it. The game has better pacing, more satisfying gunplay, is more fair and balanced, and it downright more fun to play.

I've lost a ton of skill in the Halo 3 -> Reach move... I'm EXTREMELY inconsistent now.

Just look at this:

I mean wow. I can go from doing 1700+ in a game to doing 1100 or 1200 the next game. Anyone have any guesses as to why the hell I'm so inconsistent?

Playing solo or in a party?

HAY GUYZ am I doing this intelligent discussion thing right lolo?

It's the same hilarious argument over and over again. People are dying when they're supposed to be dying, so they're annoyed. Feeling nostalgic towards Halo 3 is also laughable. Bungie is bringing their 'A' game with Reach, and 3 years of Halo 3 takes some time for people to get over.

Do some of you people really wish this were Halo 3 reskinned? Really?

I find that I am much, much more aggressive in Reach than I was in Halo 3. Sometimes it pays off with me going really positive. Other times I'm just running in and dying, over and over.

Lol @ some of the people being dicks in this thread.

I played Halo 3 and ODST firefight all night waiting for the Beta, and going from those games to Reach made me realize how slow Halo 3 was. The actual gampelay in Reach is much quicker, imo.

Your Spartan may not move super fast on his own, but jetpack and sprint make up or it.

-edit- I'm getting much better with the Needler now. I was trying to use it like the older version and getting frustrated.
Er, I mean Fuck this ReaCH NEEDLER IT'S BROKE MAKE IT LIKE hALO 3 nEEDLER bUNGIE nOW YOU OWE ME.

Sage Merrill, Sandbox Designer, mentioned it in the March Podcast, Part Two. They purposely tried to lengthen encounter times. Hence BR being ditched in favor of the DMR, which takes more shots to kill than the BR. The mainstay weapons of Reach, the Pistol and the DMR, take more shots to kill than the mainstay of Halo 3, the BR. That's the definition of less powerful.

The credits system is really bizzare. I dominate a game of Headhunter, get 91 credits. Next game, same map and gameplay mode, I score 7th, and I get 150. Wha? :lol

And FFA Oddball still sucks.

Is that's what you're really getting out of all of the complaints? If so, then you understand them less than I thought you did. My biggest gripe about Reach is that I don't feel like I'm playing a Halo game. I want to feel like I'm playing a Halo game, not some Halo/Shadowrun hybrid.

Technically, due to the BR shooting in burst fire, it tooks 12 rounds to kill a man, whilst the DMR only takes 5 rounds. Making it more powerful.

But I'm just being a nerd now, and I know what you meant :lol

Damnit Dax, how is this not a Halo game? Name one game on the market that plays like this Beta, and if you say Shadowrun, take your ass to the nearest Gamestop and buy that shit used. It's a different beast.

This is fucking Halo. Not Halo 3, not Halo 2. It's Halo Reach.

Any word on if Bungie fixed the glitch with sprint which made your gun reload sound after done sprinting? I also think they need to fix your gun animation coming out of sprint it is way to slow.

I finally got access to the beta today through a new online buddy :D And I must say, I'm totally shocked. SHOCKED! :lol For I actually had fun with Halo MP for once O_o I think I need to pre-order this... I'm in love with the melee!

Tell me about it. I bust my ass getting the flags in Stockpile and get like 150 points points. I dick around in Team Slayer, not doing shit, and get nearly 500 points.

Speaking of Stockpile, if you're one of those people who pick up the flag and then throw it back in the circle, to steal points from your teammates...

This is Halo, through and through. If anything, it hearkens back to the original Halo, which is probably why I'm digging it so much. This plays nothing like Shadowrun.

I'd love to see someone attempt to quantify encounter rate. Do encounters take a bit longer? Maybe, but the pacing is better. The game feels better and is light-years more balanced than Halo 3 ever was.

The Reach pistol is much more fair and balanced, though.

You haven't played Shadowrun then have you? Reach is like Halo CE and Shadowrun hooked up one night and Shadowrun got Halo CE pregnant.

Oh, I played enough of the demo to know that this feels nothing like it. Plus, go read the MLG forums about this very topic.

Bullshit. I fucking hated Shadowrun. The game played super fast like some sort of bastard Unreal Tourney/ Quake knock off.

I remember having to put multiple shotgun rounds into a man point blank to kill him like I was playing fucking Doom or something. Then you had that fat ass troll dude who could heal everyone.

Yes, because the MLG forums are known for their thoughtful, intelligent discussion.

P.S. The people who've played Shadowrun for years don't know what they're talking about, but you, with your handful of hours in the demo, are far more qualified to determine if Reach feels like Shadowrun.

Had a game where two of the enemy team quit, because it was 4 on 2 and most of the time they were being killed by the others it ment I got no score and finished with a 1400, that sucks because I was never near anyone to fight due to half the team quitting.

I love ranked games but I do wish there was something done about quitters, especially those who dislike a gametype and leave before the round even starts!

I had a game where the entire other team quit within the first minute of the game. My team won 4-2, I went 2-0 and finished with an 1100. And it was my 3rd Arena game of the day, so my rating was 1304 or something equally silly, but I bumped it out with the next game.

Hopping on the beta for a bit. GamerTag is RyoGCH for those of you who don't know. If anyone from HaloGAF wants to play shoot me an invite.

And I'm surprised there's people picking up on the similarities between Reach and Shadowrun. There definitely are some. I'm not going to get in depth at this exact moment in time, but it's influence is definitely felt.

Ah. So I can't have played it over at a friend's house or something? If I hadn't played the game, or at least tried it out, I wouldn't have commented on it. I didn't like Shadowrun that much.

Hey man :). I want to chime in and say that I DO feel like I'm playing a Halo game, and I've played Shadowrun a lot. However it does feel like it has some influences from Shadowrun, intentional or not.

But all in all I'm loving Reach.. it grabs me more than H3 did actually, although I loved that too :lol .

P.S Shadowrun is amazing.. loved the pistol in that game too <3. You were right Luke, pistol is awesome in Reach! I use it all the time now just for fun ;P.

I'm usually VERY aggressive in Halo 3 and Reach so idk

I agree that lowering the amount of shots to kill a person would be a good idea, for both the pistol and the DMR. I really don't see a difference between DMR and Nerfle, but some people are saying it is more consistent with the reticle expansion. Killing people faster would be a good thing, imo.

I also think that the Armor Lock user should be vulnerable the second he comes out of it. No more 180 turns to avoid assassination.

Whoever stated that tweaking the nades to have a powerful core, and weaker damage at the edge of the radius, I can get behind that too. I like the nades current power, but I agree that nade spam sucks balls.

For stages like Swordbase, a limit of 1 starting grenade, or even replacing them with plasmas altogether could work. Or not, I'm no mlg pro.

What's up with everyone voting Oddball or Headhunter almost every time a FFA game comes up? Shit man sometimes I just want to play some slayer and these dude's just want to play Oddball all the time, where's the fun in that?

I think the point is that it's assumed you haven't played it much. Now if you had 300-500+ gamerscore on it, then you could defend yourself a bit. But you haven't even played it on your own gamertag.

Yeah. Plus, if the first option and another type have an equal amount of votes, the top one always gets chosen.

Hey, what the fucks the deal with the Needle Rifle. How does that shit work? I put so many shots into a guy and it does fucking nothing. Am I missing something here? I don't pick that shit up at all, I'd rather rock my magnum. And don't say it's because I suck.
