Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Anybody else bothered somewhat by the art design? I couldn't tell you which map is which, to me they're all "the gray and brown one". They all need a dash of personality, and color.

I know i'm not going to get either :/

Humm, yeah, you already said that earlier. I don't agree, and I think you're in a minority. The game is still colorful enough, and both maps, right now, are both VERY distinct.

Well, played the game last night. Gotta say that I haven't played an fps this unentertaining in a long time. First fps I've played in a while where I can have a full audible, coherent conversation with my girlfriend while playing. It's that dull and not immersive.
I feared this. After popping in Halo 2 for the last time recently I couldn't get over how quiet the games were. Not immersive at all. I remember 3 being the same way. I know we love MW2 talk here so let me say I want to hear and talk to my entire team without pressing any damn buttons.

No. One is brown and green and the other is blue and steel.

Are you serious? Of the two maps in the beta, both have completely different palettes.

EDIT: Beaten

...... in a fucking BETA?
I don't care what stage of development it's in, quitters ruin games. 3 vs. 4 in an Objective game type is basically a guaranteed loss or tie for the 3 man team. Hopefully all these filed "Quit Early" complaints will keep me away from a chunk of them.

In Stockpile, if I'm on the red team it is a a blue waypoint marker that tells me to take my (currently) red flag to the red stockpile. So when the stockpile is out of view, the red team has to follow a blue way point. Remember the Giant Bomb video when the guy kept taking the flag to the wrong place? That's why. When it comes to the way points, it's opposite day. Why?

This, I was playing stockpile myself (red team) and for a while was confused where to go with flags. They should make your waypoints based on ur team color.

That's what I'm saying.
They are QUITTING in a fucking BETA? can it get any worse/sad than this? report those guys.

Any UK or euro player currently feel that we keep getting american hosts? In so many games and the swat game I just played there is an obvious delay between landing the killing shot and seeing them die, like the ping is 200ms or something high.

Why oh WHY can't us euro brothers be grouped together? maybe the beta is lacking users currently but as others have said in this thread, that green ping bar is a lie, full green = 200ms is how it feels currently.

This is probably why I feel like i'm not getting kills with the needle rifle or losing firefights with others, I have shitty fucking ping.

Since I had a chance to sleep on my experiences last night here is what I thought...

Grenades... stupid crazy. Seriously. I've always wanted the grenades to have a little more punch, but not this much. Now it's possible I'm just jealous that I didn't think or properly manage my grenade supply, cause it is fairly sweet to blow people away with them.

I didn't get a chance to pick up all the weapons, but my first move was to always get rid of the AR... fast. Not digging the spawns at the moment, especially with the grenades since I seemed to spawn in the same spot every time, thus making me a super easy kill for the other team and their grenade spamming. I also had a teamate spawn literally right in front of me during the heat of battle as I shot the rocket launcher... wasn't pretty.

Those are my major complaints or should I say issues, but so much about the game is awesome. Outside of the changes in adding loadouts, armor abilities and the reticules the game feels a lot like Halo CE (to me atleast, and maybe that's cause the pistol). It looks like Halo feels like Halo, but didn't play like any Halo game I've played before because of the loadouts and armor abilities. They really bring something new to the table that can create a lot of different results... I was tending to fall more towards the sprint armor ability for it to me seemed to have the most versatility in that I could use it to chase someone down or use it to run for cover.

Also if anyone played any covie-slayer games did you have a hard time telling the difference between your teamates and the other team? Yes I know they have markers above their head, but when people are close together it was hard for me to tell the red vs blue.

Change your Matchmaking settings to prefer Faster connections. I expect there to be more settings added but from the recent ViDoc, I got the impression that the MM would link people closer together. This might work better once all the ODST owners join in.

Been using that since the moment I started the beta, I can feel and see shots having delays, sometimes better then others though. The recorded videos show it also, it's like the enemy is always one shot ahead of you :(

Please bungie make the matchmaking really heavily force region in searches if it's not already.

I hope does too. The more people play, the better the chances of the MM working.

I, like Littleberu definetely don't feel the same way.
The tone of the game is a bit more serious, and the colour scheme kind of reflects this. Feels a bit closer to reality.

As for which map is which, you're crazy, can easy picture each map in my mind.

Now that we have played covie slayer. Would any of you mind if they put other races in the game as well? After playing as elites I think as long as its playlist seperated, they should add more. I sans see some jackel can ODST matches :lol

I would so love Grunts playable. Like playing Odd-job in Goldeneye. :lol

Oh yeah, one of my concerns at the moment is stemming from the loadouts. Spawn time goes way too fast to be able to choose a loadout and then a spawn location. They should change the d-pad to left/right for spawning locations and up/down for loadout. I could get that all done in 3 seconds. :D

Maybe I was exagerating about the art design, i'll just bow out now :lol just not a fan of the overall more realistic look I guess. Everything just seems to mesh together to me on the outdoor maps, I don't know. But i'm really enjoying the beta, so whatever.

I like the pistol but I usually find myself hitting my enemy with all bodyshots and when we get in a beatdown battle I always lose...how many shots with the pistol does it take to kill?

Also, anyone know where I can find locations of power weapons? I don't know where the Sniper on Swordbase or Powerhouse is. Also the Plasma Launcher.

There's only one outdoor map available right now.

Or you could take another leaf from CoD and allow you to pick your next loadout from the pause menu.

I'm gonna be stoned for this, but I'd love to play a Brute. With Jetpack and a Berserker mode where you gain quite a bit of health for a few seconds, and can only melee. That would be cool.

The weapons really are amazing. They finally look and sound like meaty, effective weaponry. The best part is that with a beefed up AR and the retooled pistol, you no longer have to run for a BR/DMR at the start of a match. The starting weapon set is effective enough to get the job done. i prefer all of the new additions and replacements to their old counterparts except for maybe the focus rifle/beam rifle (still unsure, only used once).

The lighting seems less pronounced than Halo 3, but probably more realistic and nuanced. The 2 maps Powerhouse and Sword Base don't look all that great. I'm not even sure if they look better than halo 3's maps. Powerhouse is similar to High Ground, but so far, not as good looking or playing. Sword Base is more like a Construct type map, but it honestly plays very well. There aren't camping spots in Sword Base that Halo 3 variants like Construct had. The map seems to flow better and is great for objective games. Sword Base is probably the better of the 2 so far.

I'm not sure the character models look better either. They seem more detailed, but less pronounced which makes the detail get somewhat lost. I'm also not sure that i like the micro-managed armor permutation approach. none of the permutations (so far) look all that great...they're kind of boring and expensive as fuck to upgrade.

Assassinations are cool...i guess. Kind of neat to see, but they're not as satisfying as Gears' executions. Fall damage is good. Shield system seems fine, but i still need to get used to how the melee/shields work now. Grenades seem very powerful, but i'm not sure that this is bad. I don't really like the way the nades look and bounce though. They now have an orange trail to them similar to KZ2...ugly, and they seem to bounce less consistently and don't have as much of the iconic "clink" sound as before.

Matchmaking is fast as fuck and the party system is as seemless as ever. You stay with your matched group more often now, as in, the default is to "party up" instead of to split up, and it doesn't spit you back into matchmaking after every game. Lag is also non-existent, this is the best net-code that Bungie has ever had.

I'm indifferent to the perks, but unexpectedly prefer Invis to the others. Overall the perk system is probably better than Halo 3's equipment.

Overall, everyone isn't going to love the changes, and i don't think that there will be a permanent mass exodus from Halo 3 to Halo Reach. It's probably a better game overall than Halo 3, but the "pre-beta" is such a small slice that it's too early to call. I haven't even seen or driven a vehicle yet.

Nope, if anything I've been surprised at how smooth it all is, especially coming from MW2.

There's a EuroGAF Halo gamertag though, might be better if you group up with some of us in there, although I've got no headset atm (never again will I lend expensive stuff to family members).

I personally want to see a co-op game type involving two player playing as hunters and everyone else hunting them. Oh also guys when you pick up an objective I see a second AA slot, so we might see objective based AA's :D

Right, but i'm getting the same vibe from pictures of Overlook and Boneyard. It's nothing that ruins the game of course, and it seems it's just me, so all is well!

---

There is a gamemode where you can start with a needler rifle, correct?

Sprint is my favorite by far, I just want to get back into the action if I respawn or something. :lol It's useful to get away from someone trailing you too. Armor Lock is a bitch to deal with other players using it. I don't like how your sound is muffled with Invis. Jetpack is cool but it feels too slow, somewhat expected.

I love the DMR.

Ah. I wouldn't worry too much about that, they're both pretty distinct. Give 'em a whirl when we get 'em up and running and see for yourself. It's free! ;)

Not true. I'm a die hard Halo fan and absolutely love it.
Same, where the hell is this information coming from. This game is just as good as Halo 2 competitively from my experience and I have high hopes for competitive gametypes (MLG). Halo 3 is in the past, this game feels so much faster.

I figured I'd finally show up and list some of my impressions.

Love
-The feel of it all! When I first started it didn't feel quite the same but by the end of the night it definitely felt like Halo and I loved it. It's gonna be hard to go back to Halo 3 after this.
-Covy Slayer. I love how the Elites play, it's so fun to roll around in the middle of combat, really helps expand firefights to make them more interesting than Halo 3's swiveling back and forth shooting BRs at each other.
-The weapons all feel great. I like how they feel different for once and there's a lot more strategy to what you choose to roll around with.
-The armor abilities all feel unique and each have great uses.
-The graphics definitely look improved over Halo 3 which is good, albeit not a huge issue.
-Stockpile. Really love the tug of war dynamics that go on with this one.
-The menus for everything and choosing your emblem. Some really good design choices.

Like
-Headhunter. It's sort of a love hate relationship with this one. When a match goes on for a long time it feels really good and fun, but it's altogether far too easy to luck out onto a pile of skulls right at a drop point due to people running to cash them in and then one person just easily strolls in for a skullamanjaro.
-The grenade strength, though it does make grenade spam rather annoying. At least there are ways to combat this with armor abilities(sprint away, armor lock, ect.)
-Canceling out sword lunges with a well-timed bash, though it does make it a bit harder to use the sword whereas the shotgun seems even more effective now than it previously did.

Hate
-1 Flag on Powerhouse. That map is balanced in a really bad way for the team on offense. It's far too easy to consistently annihilate the offensive team given the defensive points start in relation to various power weapons.
-Jumping. The jump feel way too short, really takes away from some of the maneuvering you can do on maps. I remember the first time I played Swordbase on that ramp that goes up and down and has the glass walkway overhead, I went to jump from the ramp to the walkway and missed the first time which quickly made me realize how much I missed Halo 3's jumping.

As a side note: What are the various challenges that randomly pop up with the perfection symbol during a match? I assumed they were like the challenges that Bungie said people could complete for extra Cr but is there no way to view them?

Speaking of which, can someone with render minutes rip "Super Awesome Spawns" out of my file share...

http://www.bungie.net/stats/reach/fileshare.aspx?player=Shake Appeal&fc=2

...because I think I need people to see this.

I've rendered that for you mate.

I'm loving just about everything in the beta so far, although I find the cross hair can sometimes blend in with the background and you can lose track of where you're shooting. Does this happen to anyone else or is it my setup?

Covy Slayer is awesome btw, I'm glad that the Elites are actually powerful now!

Yeah, I'm from the UK and I've had no problems so far. Even when I was in a game with bars fluctuating all the time, it seemed to be working just dandy. Even so, it should be better once the player population rises, I imagine there are very few players from Europe at the moment.

I really don't like Sword Base at all for some reason while the only problem I have had with Powerhouse is people spawning 2 meters behind me and slapping me down so yeah, it is a bit similar to High Ground. :lol Got to agree with you that Camo is shit hot, lets me get up close and personal which is where I do mildly well in Halo.

Can't wait for Invasion, being able to play as an Elite on a more consistant basis will be awesome.
