Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I don't know why it'd be hard to see!? Literally everything has improved. Number of dynamic light source, texturing, modelling, environment poly count, shadow filtering, ssao, motion blur, resolution, aa, texture filtering, post processing, particles, transparency effects, they've all seen a nice bump. Maybe you don't notice one effect by itself (though the bump in resolution and the better texture filtering are difficult to miss, as is the object based motion blur) but collectively they have a huge impact, and really set the game apart from its (frankly disapointing) prequel.

All the things Halo 3 did well are still there as well ofcourse, the 4 player split mode (with online and a steady framerate), the lack of tearing, the HDR lighting, the recorded movies and the skyboxes but everything else is just flat out better (ghosting aside, but that's a tradeoff like I said and one I'm happy to back).
I guess I haven't really been paying too much attention to the little details like the ones you listed. I can definitely see improvement, but not a drastic one - I guess it's difficult to the untrained eye and I know a lot of people in this thread don't see too much of a difference either.

Like I said though, I'm willing to take your word on it :lol

Well from the 10 minutes I got to play (servers getting hammered I assume), I will say that Reach feels/controls dramatically better than ODST/3.

I'm excited...

So...I can't play anything. haha I got to play one game of Arena and now nothing will load. Anyone know what's up? Some people are saying to download through ODST now but I really don't want to. I like booting from my dash.
You don't need to download it again it's just bingie's servers being raped by 160k+ users

WTF just happened.

Plat SWAT, 9/10 deaths are people getting one shot headshots on me with pistols and DRM's. How is this possible? Literally every death is by a one shot headshot
I'm sorry man but :lol :lol

Thanks to the slow loading I've got one game of arena in after a half hour, but it felt good to play with people that hadn't before. :P Serious confidence booster. I think it said I'm a 1650 now or something. I'm sure that will tank fast :lol

So are the Arena matches not being registered because of the server issues? I've played three, but bnet doesn't show any, and the progress bars in the game only show one. I've been doing so well too (+16 to +20 each game, and I'm pretty sure its just because a lot of people jumping in are just baaaaaaaad) :(

Two things I would love to see added to the game:

1) A killcam for SWAT.

2) Some audible indicator to show that I got the kill (both MW2 and Uncharted 2 have this, and it's incredibly gratifying)

Thanks, just making sure. Played one game of Arena and scored 1607, was a lot of fun even though one kid on our team quit we only lost by 3.

I plan on starting the DL once I get home from the gym. Hopefully, it'll be done by the time I'm done eating dinner. Can't wait! :D

As for MW2 matching up!? :lol I can only assume its a joke, I mean, really now, lets not act silly, this route leads to people giving COD4 the "best graphics" award over Crysis. GOW3, yes I should have included that, I just forgot to mention it.

Not joking at all. I'd take MW2's buttery smooth framerate any day over what KZ2 has.

I'm surprised to see so many complaints about the graphics, I mean this is without doubt the most technologically impressive game on the 360 and visually its the only game on the system that can compete with the PS3's best. I can understand people not being a fan of the ghosting artefacts caused by the temporal antialiasing but they're really not something that I notice all that much and the really nice amount of aa it brings to the table makes it a worthwile trade off imo. Its something Bungie could easily just leave as an option in the final iteration and I hope that's something they do as I'd like to see it stay, personally.

The big game changers visually are the object based motion blur (which is always welcome) a really nice and subtle but artefact free SSAO implementation and a huge increase in the nuber of dynamic lights, oh and lets not forget the massive leap in generatl image quality (nice increase in resolution + decent texture filtering + an aa solution) as well. I was expecting either effects or image quality to increase, not both. Oh, and then there's the much better texturing and modelling, and with the better image quality you can appreciate these improvements. I said it earlier in the thread but this is a generational leap. Halo 3 was Bungie phoning it in, there can be denying that now, I always assumed it was the case but Reach is the indisputable evidence. Can't wait to see what they can do on PC now! :D

Hmm, just played my first arena match.
Did terrible in the beginning, but got about 7 kills in the last couple minutes.
What a rush!

Well, obviously you would have a better eye for these things, but I just don't see it. To me, the game looks almost exactly like Halo 3, with the exception of less audacious tones and a distracting ghosting artifact.

I'm playing on a Panny G10 50 inch from about 4 feet away. What type of settings do you think I should twiddle with to get more out of a game like this?

Also, doesn't the feature that all your matches can be seen back in theater mode bring extra limitations to the graphics?

Well, I'm sure they could make the game look a bit better if they weren't recording everything you're doing and allowing for split screen gaming. But Bungie created a feature set with Halo 3 that they must match in Halo Reach.

4 Player split screen - online gaming, up to 16 players and tracking dozens(hundreds) on moving physics objects including projectiles, weapons in the environment, vehicles, grenades and other gameplay objects.

It's quite insane when you think about it, what these machines are capable of when it comes to networking, not to mention all the stat tracking they're coordinating through Bungie.net.

damnit if people don't stop requesting shittastic COD features in my haylos then i'm gonna cut a birch.

kill cam? RAGE
xp pop ups? RAGE RAGE

are 3 games in the top 10 major nelson leaders not enough??? RAAAAAGGGEEEE

I'm scared to jump into Arena right now in fear that I'll go -15 in there :lol . I have been sucking so bad in the beta is is getting borderline frustrating for me. :(

Umm, maybe sitting 5 feet further away (O__o)

Animations are soooooooooo damn good. DMR is the best weapon in Halo history (yes even better than the CE pistol!).

Loving this game.

I don't notice tech. stuff like ghosting, etc... but I agree with those saying the game looks a lot better than Halo 3. I think some of you just need to go back and play H3 to see a difference. Definitely the best looking 360 game I own.

A word of warning to people who are yet to download the beta, when you start downloading the beta don't hit the guide button it cancels your download and you have to start all over again, just found out the hard way :(

Its hardly buttery smooth, and if I want to play a 60fps game I'll go and boot up my PC, its not something out of the ordinary as you imply. If we want to argue framerate then use something like Afterburner which has a real 60hz refresh (along with excellent image quality).

Yeah it looks great to me, animations alone put this game on another level compared to Halo 3.

You can re-start the download from the dashboard by going into you account info, then download history. This will make it a normal background download item too, so you can turn off the Xbox or play a non-online game while you download the Beta.

Was mentioned a few pages back.

arena formula is BROKEN

everyone on the other team quit, i got a 1500. my real rank was 1630. now that match with the quitters are gonna bring it down

Only your three best three matches count, so just keep playing. For your rating that is.

You mean all that defending you've been doing and you haven't even played it yet?

I've been playing. I was simply saying that the server finally came up long enough to search for players.

:lol The ridiculously positive immediate reactions in this thread are hilarious. Just wait until the novelty rinses off. I'm interested to see the difference in opinions.

You shouldn't be using any specific settings for any individual game. Just calibrate your set to recognised industry standards, turn off all processing and 1:1 map the 360's 1080p output.

Joke post?

You don't get it. It's not the one shot kill = death that I'm curious about, its the fact that in any given situation or context, whether I am flying or jumping or running, the opponent gets a headshot. What are the odds of that? I've never seen accuracy like that. I must have died 11 times and 10 times I was killed with a headshot from DISTANCE
