Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I'm going to pretend I didn't read any of this. I'm afraid to get my hopes up. I never got to play Firefight much in ODST due to (a) lack of matchmaking, and (b) lagging/disconnect issues due to Firefight netcode being based on campaign netcode, but what I played I loved. Having Firefight with objectives, 6 players, and the new AAs and weapons....too much to hope for.

hopefully Grab Bag isn't a playlist in the final game, sometimes I just wanna play team slayer but no objective games.

Sorry we had to leave. My bro has an exam in the morning and we have the 360 in our room so it wouldn't really work well to keep on playing :p I'll be on tomorrow at some stage. Although tbh, Arena would have been risky until we know tat the matches are getting logged ok.

yeah, i dont see anyone using the assault rifle either, unless they just started playing.
 
I must subconsciously be a pacifist because I seem to be completely unable to kill anybody in Reach. Specifically the DMR, Nerfle, and Pistol; I can pop shields like nobody's business but I can never manage to land that final headshot, it is really infuriating. :lol

It has greater accuracy at a higher rate of fire from further distances than the magnum.

In normal Slayer it's AR start and Magnum secondary. In Slayer Pro it's DMR/BR start and no secondary.

Use a pistol and try duel someone who has the DMR, from medium to long range.

Have fun with the respawn. Might I suggest Sprint for the next Load Out? (So you can run the fuck away from DMR users.)
 
I forgot Halo has no join session in progress, which really peeves me. I want to play with some GAFFERS DANG-IT!

I have HaloGaf beta or whatever on my FR but I'm way to shy to just invite everyone to a lobby. :(

DMR > Pistol at range. In fact, it's pretty brutal up close as well.

Just Queue into their party. It's a rad feature, I think.

Had a pretty nice game with one of my friends, unfortunately it's 3:30am here so he couldn't talk. I wanted to upload it to render it since it's his second game ever, first with me, but File Share seems to be down . Oh well, tomorrow when I get back from my Chem class I guess.

edit: first penalty ever, some guy sprints in front of me in front of me as I fire the RL on a cluster of guys =(

I still won, 17 - 14, but my rating was in the 1400s. Please fix. I played and kicked ass, the Arena rating formula should reflect this.

Urk, or anyone else from Bungie...or anybody that knows, where do we go for a key as to what the Arena scores actually mean? Like, whats a good score, bad score, etc?

This week's BWU. Front page of Bungie.net, linked at the top of the OP or in the Arena section of the OP.

Scores are always relative to the population and the Division you're in. You'll know how you're doing based on your Division. A 1600 Steel is not a 1600 Onyx.
 
Are the Arena games not being counted right now, or is all the data backed up and being queued? Only one of my Arena matches is showing up on bnet.

Hmmm. The Arena formula takes into account the amount of players in a game but I wonder if it's on a per playlist basis or if it's dynamic and is factored in the fly. It's a tough thing to do though. You can't say, well the game doesn't count then because then people would quit out of matches before the game ends. Maybe the game could only count if the teams are even in number? I don't know.
 
So my friend is absolutely infuriated about assists being equal to 1 point. (the same as a kill) He got 20 kills in one game, but only had one assist. and my other friend had 13 kills and 9 assists. My friend with 20 kills is mad because he didn't get 'first'. Does anyone else feel like an assist isn't worth 1 point?
 
Gah, just had my first "wtf, really?" moment with the arena ratings. I had 11 kills and 9 deaths, while another guy on my team had 13 kills and a massive 19 deaths, and he got a higher rating than me?

Do your killcount really factor that highly compared to your deathcount?
 
There's a landing strip for the Longswords outside Swordbase if you look out one of the windows.. I fucking called it that there would be one like a month ago and urk mocked me.

BTW, what are the stripes next to your name in the Arena lobby? I have two out of three, is that like the progress towards your daily rating?? If so I've played a bunch of games already, don't tell me these are not counting?? I've been doing good against the new guys lol.

raw_rating = kills + assists - deaths/3 - betrayals

It's a weight k/d spread, set up to become harder to increase the higher you get ratio wise. That's all.

I don't think the DMR needs to be a 4 shot weapon, but I still think it might be better to have the bloom reduce slightly faster to allow a higher rate of fire.

Your friend is dumb.

1 kill is worth 1 assist is worth -3 deaths. Personally I think it should be -2 deaths, so that camping isn't that great of strategy, but so that players are a bit less reckless. Deaths by betrayal shouldn't count. Do they right now?

As soon as the servers are back, it'll be story time =)

If you do that much damage to someone it should be worth one point. Your friend with 20 kills could have just went around cleaning up people's left overs. This is one thing I like about the Gears 2 system. You get points for the damage done to an enemy. If you do the most damage you get the most points.

Also, I don't know if you guys have noticed this or not, but if you look at the top of the scoreboard during an area game you can see your current score. It changes throughout the game so it's a good way to keep track of how you are doing.

Hard to say really.. sometimes you could do 99% of the damage to someone and only get an assist. In that case I think you deserve the 1 point as much as the other person. However, for every assist like that there is another where someone hits somebody with one AR bullet and gets an assist.

I think that getting equal points should encourage more teamwork and therefore is a good thing.
