Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I don't know what to think. Gotta play a lot more to formulate a better opinion. Kind of mixed feelings right now. It's still "Halo" but VERY different.

Quick & Dirty:

- Interface and HUD are fine and well designed

- Takes a bit to get used to new (default) controls (RB to melee? X to reload? LB to use armor perk?)

- Game speed, overall, is too slow. Spartans feel to clunky and heavy.

- Don't get a good sense when I'm getting hurt or when I'm hurting others

- Armor lock isn't as cheap as I thought. It's sooo easy to avoid it. Just run backwards and chuck grenades :lol

- Active camo though is annoying. Don't know what the fuck is going on (I'M DEAF). It's lame for the user and those in close proximity.

- The UNSC weapons feel so weak and under powered. Covie weapons on the other hand are pretty good.I was afraid that the Plasma Repeater was just the Plasma Rifle, just with another name. I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it is. AR is ass. Pistol, not as beast as it should. DMR be sloooooooooooow. Needle Rifle is pretty good.

- Map design isn't bad, but not amazing. Powerhouse is decent, Sword Base is kind of boring and dull.

That's it for now.

EDIT

- Yeah, sprint with CQ/ melee weapons (plus active camo) is just... :lol

Again, I only played four or five matches. I plan on spending a lot of time with the beta tomorrow.

It's either starting to click, or it's just fresh meat syndrome, but my average is now at 1634 and I went +15 last game. It felt good

Beta apparently working better now?

Beta is Online and Operational

Some string, duct tape, and a whole lot of elbow grease later.

The Beta is not quite fully operational, but it should be moving at a pretty good clip now that our online team has applied some technological fixups. You should still expect suboptimal performance, but you should also now be getting games with relative ease. Once again, thanks for being patient. Unless of course you weren't patient at all and you made like a million posts to the feedback forum to complain about the outage even though there were already like a million posts already made complaining about the outage. If you were that guy, thanks for nothing!

Again, we're not out of the woods just yet. If you experience any problems connecting or getting into games, please let us know about it. Politely, of course. Otherwise, have fun in the Beta!

1-Flag CTF on sword base is so very interesting. The flag originates at the bottom of the map, and is returned at the top, making you travel up and across the bridges several times to reach it. So naturally you escort your flag carrier, resulting in an epic venture only possible through teamwork. I love it! :D

Overall I'm loving the beta so far. The distinct feel of the human weapons versus the covenant weapons is perfect for the setting of the game. Although I absolutely HATE that power beam weapon. It's so devastating and I have no idea what to do, especially since I never use the armor-lock class. I can't wait for vehicles...

Slayer Pro is so fucking good.

I probably won't be able to go back to Grab Bag after playing with no Armor Lock or any of that shit.

Just realised why the Elite Halo 3 players aren't enjoying Reach.

It evens the playing field.

I'm doing better on Reach than I ever did in Halo 3. So awesome. Loving it right now and probably wouldn't change a thing now that I"m learning the nuances of each weapon.

Although I actually dont like the new voting system. You play the same stuff all the time, never get to play Slayer Pro

I posted some in depth impressions last week. The only thing that's changed is that I'm getting a little more hold of the Plasma Repeater and Needle Rifle and definitely think a little bit more of them now. I really can't wait for Invasion and Generator Defense to open up.

And with all of you newcomers out there, I'm going to say this...Do not go in trying to play it like Halo 3, and wish that THIS THING was the way it was in in Halo 3 or THIS THING was the way it was in Halo: CE, or THIS THING was the way it was in Halo 2. Bungie has really gone back to the drawing board here and I really think this is the most balanced Halo game they've made so far. Play it like it's new. Because it is. Get used to it and enjoy the new game.

My brain is firing...REACH REACH REACH.

Until people figure out you can just use the vertical mancannon to throw it up into the area where you need to return it. In fact, this was the only way I thought you could do it for awhile until I figured out the map. Who wants to run around the whole map? :(

I'm still awful at this game, but:

Movement speed is still too low, especially strafing.
Sprint!

So I'm going to go out on a limb and assume there's no way to join matchmaking games while they're mid-match correct?

Matchmaking, just like Halo 3, is incredibly slow.
Though I have not played today/tonight, I can't justify anything in that regard. However, in days in F&F, the MM times are dozens and dozens times faster than Halo 3. And that's with a small population.

Love it. The jetpack changes everything. Feels kinda like Shadowrun.

Shadowrun is way smoother though :p.

Although this game + Teddy Pendergrass tribute mixtape mix everything allllllright

Finished tonight with, what, a 1627 rating? Wish I could have gotten better, but 4 more days to go.
1617 here. battlebros.

also, I thought about this after I shot for the highest score possible but maybe I dont want to play my top level game until I get put in a division so I get to stomp nerds in the future instead of being a punching bag for MLG wannabes.

Man, we are a pretty good team, Sai__kun, ne0, and chapel.

Also, 1652 or something for yesterday's ranking. That's probably like, Bronze or something. :lol

The game feels like simplified Shadowrun to me. You can only use one skill at a time instead of as many as you want and the dmr/covie rifle is an easier to use shadowrun rifle.

Speeding the movement speed would do a lot of good. It would make sniping and grenade spamming harder to get kills with. There times that you see a grenade and don't have the ability to run away from it because the character is too slow. I don't think grenades you see coming should kill you so easily. Shotguns would also become more useful too.

this brings up a thought. by which clock do the dailies reset?

Got a bunch of games in today and so far I really like it. It's hard to get used to all the new gametypes, SWAT was interesting first time, really enjoy it now as a diversity. Not really feeling Covy Slayer though, so few weapons and often very hectic close quaters. Looking forward to the new maps and modes.

This feels like Halo: Watered Down

I'm going to keep playing the beta, but it seems a lot of the skill and nuance that Halo 3 allowed is gone.

Pretty good. After two hours I'm already tired of the two maps and the basic gametypes though. Bring me invasion already.

Pretty sure a lot of people are forgetting this is a BETA. You're playing the beta to help Bungie ship a better final product. It's not a demo people.

Why on earth would Bungie allow people to do that? Halo has always been about team work and map control. Turning everyone into some kind of Super Spartan would dilute the experience much like Modern Warfare 2 has done. As for the shotgun it's a CQC weapon that an intelligent player can devastate with when used in the correct situations. Sounds like you have been attempting to run around with it and engage in mid-long combat.

I'm really glad that the Arena games I'm playing now are finally registering. Have a 6.00 k/d ratio in Arena (according to bnet), hope I can keep it up that high :P

Edit: ended the night at 1699. I guess that's good? I wish there were better metrics for comparison.
