Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Plus if a guy is rushing me, he's well within range for me to spam the trigger 'til he gets within melee range. If I havn't dropped his shields by that point I've failed as a human and deserve to die.
Ah, I forgot to give you mad props for the HaloGAF montage. Just watched it last night for the first time. It was probably the best montage I've seen (ok, minus the Str8 Rippin team montage). I love how I capped off the end of it with my 3
I counted
incredible clips. Bravo, Mr. B.

Unless they have the Hammer. If you don't have shotty or rockets to kill the runner before he is in range you are dead.

Changing sprint to dash and giving the ability to dash in any direction would spice up gameplay and give you defensive options with the run ability. It would be awesome to dash backwards away from melee rushers and gives sprinters a way to escape grenade spam.

Grenades are too fucking powerful. They have to increase movement speed to compensate for the grenades or neuter them. They are overkill as they are now.

They need to some how fix things in regards to grenades and melee because they are broken.
I'm a little iffy on the grenades.

It seems like if weapons take even 1/10th of someone's shield, a grenade will finish the job (then again, it SEEMS like; I have no idea if that's actually how it works).

On the other hand, the person has to be pretty close to the grenade for them to actually die.

There's too many grenades on the map. It's just THROWTHROWohlookifoundmoarTHROWTHROW afjslkngmn.j whyyyyyy

Regardless, many of the Halo players visit that form and the same issues keep coming up maybe I was being harsh before but I really hope that Bungie is looking into the issues sorry for raging earlier:lol I just want the game to be fun but at the current state I feel like it has a little ways to go but it can be fixed.

Right now the best way you can deal with grenades and rushers is with the jetpack. Problem with jetpack is that it doesn't work in tight spaces.

People need to stop trying to play Halo 3 in the BETA. Tactics that worked for you in Halo 3 will not always work for you in Reach. AR rush + beatdown, for instance. Firing weapons at the highest rate of fire which the weapon is capable, is another. That shit isn't gonna fly in Reach, son.

Anyone else think the hammer lunge is comically hilarious? I don't even mind it is just a bit crazy to have a sword-like lunge on a hammer. :lol

It can help you a little in Sword Base. Bumping the ceiling can sometimes keep you from the overpowered perfectly fine grenade's instant death radius.

:D thanks dude. It's also on Waypoint now I believe to anyone who hasnt watched yet (slight musical differences though I believe)

Well the Hammer is a close quarters power weapon. There does seem to be a bug where you can swing the Hammer straight out of sprint instead of having a second or so delay to reset the weapon after sprint like most weapons. That, I admit, needs fixing.

Read this.
I have seen this particular pattern countless times now.
In fact, it seems to be the most common pattern for people capable of keeping an open mind.

4 shots anywhere while shielded, followed by a headshot. To a shielded opponent, headshots don't do any more damage than a shot anywhere else.

This is something I really did know, so all fire fights it is best to go to the body first and then watch the bloom and go for the final headshot? Am I reading this correctly?

Its what I do when nades get thrown around corners. Then I duck so I don't appear on the motion sensor.

This what i love about it the most. The butthurt one move players having to use different approaches to score. I remember noob combo kids crying why they changed BR-Plasma Pistol combo. Well done Bungie :D !!

Very correct.

1. Four quick shots anywhere
2. Take a breather
3. ????
4. Profit

Ok question to score in CTF do you have to run over the capture point or can you throw the flag by it because my friend threw the flag by the point and it did not count.

My mind has been blown, seriously. :lol
You might wanna watch this - the spelling could use some work, but the filming and gameplay are spot-on. I caught both the timing, and the look of 'popped' shields, from this. (Maybe I was just blind before watching it, or something, but I couldn't figure out when the guy I was shooting was shieldless. Then I watched this, said "OOOHhhh..." and now I can see it all the time.)

Edit:

Needs to be in your hands for it to count.

Ugh, so Ve3tro decided to upload my video to their YouTube account as Reach gameplay. They credited me, but now I've got some jackass saying I stole it from them and I really would have like to have been asked before it was used to promote their site. I've got my own damn sites to promote.

And to top it off, YouTube isn't letting me comment.

EDIT: Also to everyone having their mind blown by shields vs. health - it was exactly the same mechanic in Halo 2 and 3.

Where is my division rating, Bungie?

I've played 3 games a day for the last three days, getting a day rating each day. Shouldn't I have been assigned to a division today?

When I asked this earlier the response was you get assigned at the end of the season..which makes no sense to me but ok.

i dunno why but this made me chuckle pretty good.

QFT! I found the game enjoyable right away, but I had concerns about these items. Last night when I got on to play, I didn't even notice that everything felt natural. Does it need some tweaking? Yes, and it will be tweaked but overall the game is solid and very grounded.

If anything I do think it could be a little more "arcadey", it seems a lot of people agree too. Example, there's a reason everyone loves Covy slayer so much, maybe the whole game should feel a little more like that.

The Needle Rifle feels more capable than the DMR, reminds me of how awesome the Carbine was in the H3 beta. I'm hoping the DMR goes more towards the Neddle Rifle in terms of accuracy and speed than moving the neddle rifle the other way.

Well, played the beta for a coupled hours last night for the first time.

I went through what is probably the normal curve for this. First, I was put off by the differences and I was a little disappointed. It didn't feel right (i.e. exactly the same as H3). But then after about 3 or 4 games it really started to click with me and now I really like it.

I don't envy Bungie. They have a tightrope to walk. If they change the formula at all, some people will complain that it's not Halo. If they don't change the formula, other people will complain that it's stale or Halo 3.5.

I LIKE the fact that melee is less useful, and that grenades seem more powerful. I really enjoy the new loadouts, especially the jetpack (useful or not!)

The only two things I have a problem with right now are 1) the armor lock ability seems like it needs some kind of adjustment (less time, some kind of weakness, etc.) seems like I'm missing something here, but people used it to the point of annoyance in several matches. 2) The fancy assassinations. I just don't like 'em. It slows the game down. Personal preference, I guess.

Dmr does more damage than the needle rifle.

I haven't posted on GAF for like 5 days and I've played Reach for like only two. I hate finals week. Even without finals I can't get time to play much.

In my absence, did people finally start to like Swordbase? I never did bother to do that guide/strategy write up for it.

Some guy did an assassination on me where my guy got on his stomach while he pointed a pistol at me. :lol It may have been a glitch, since it was over a ledge, kinda in the air.

I heard a rumor about this one. Saved the video?

Yeah, I noticed those kids doing that and I remembered Urk saying something about crouching and aiming, so I started messing around in that game with it. Could have sworn that my reticule was a little bit tighter whenever I crouched. Then again I'm super tired and haggard at the moment. :lol

@Nutter: Yeah dude, it's not good when a video game frustrates you this much. Games are supposed to be fun to play, and should make you want to come back and play more. They should feel rewarding. But Reach is just pissing me off right now! That doesn't really say good things for the future and longevity of this game. I mean if I wasn't such a huge Halo fan I don't know if I would have continued to play this game after maybe the first day. I'm trying really hard to like the game right now, and I thought I was actually beginning to like it the other day, but now I'm just not sure anymore.

Agreed, although, I've been telling myself lately that it's just a Beta, let alone just a video game and I should be spending the time enjoying it as much as I can since it'll be slipped away from me in less than 2 weeks.

Arena is awesome because the new ranking system is excellent, there's Slayer Pro (no radar makes you actually play the game looking straight ahead at your surroundings instead of playing it through a blue circle) and Needle Rifle starts (<3 the NR, the DMR is such garbage; R.I.P. BR) with only one grenade to spawn with, however, even if I'm searching for a match with ONE other player, I'm getting matched up against a party of 4 all the time.

Arena also gives me flashbacks of Halo 3's Team Slayer with both teams just camping one side of the map and just waiting there for the other to move ahead which just makes the games downright boring. Also, it's WAYYY more competitive than I'd like to be, but I guess that was the point of the playlist, anyway.

I'm just going to get my third daily rating in so I can be placed into a Division and play Invasion and Grab Bag from here on out for the Beta. :)

Is there a trick to doing the assassinations? I've held the B button (360, using "Recon" setup) down several times with no luck. You need to be behind the enemy, right?

Headshots to the visor should crack the visor.

Hugbot said:
Also half (literally half - four out of eight) of the Arena matches I got a chance to play last night started with 1-3 players on my team, never the other team, leaving immediately. Son of every bitch.
I was forced to play a 4 on 1 game yesterday.

I should of have the option to concede without penalty.

PS

I shouldn't even be in this thread.

I swore off online gaming forever last night...

I'm such a fucking crackhead.

:(

Yes, directly behind and just hold down the melee button as you attack, make sure the melee actually makes contact though you can't just hold down the button and run into them.

I think your provisional Arena Division gets assigned once your 3rd daily rating is final i.e. at the end of the thrid day. This is an assumption, but I think we'll see them tomorrow, once the daily rating is finalized for everyone. Possibly...

One thing that I want to give props to Bungie for that I've only heard complaints against, clip size. Especially the pistol. I see everyone asking for more shots, but it makes me wonder whatever happened to reloading being a balancing factor for a weapon. It's worst that in previous games, most weapons except for power weapons only had enough clip size for a single kill, but then the Battle Rifle and Carbine were exempt from this rule. Now it's been changed so that all regular weapons have enough clip to kill one person and maybe damage a second before reloading. You have a sidearm for a reason.

Only weapon with too big of a clip size is the shotgun, you can just tear people apart with this weapon. I love it, really feels like the power shotgun of Halo CE days but the clip is just too large. I feel bad when I use it. :lol
