Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Anyone have any film of a simultaneous gun kill already saved? It doesn't have to be clipped out, I don't mind going through the film looking for it. If so would you mind linking it here so that I can save it to my Xbox? Thanks in advance. :D

I'm not seeing as many crazy moments in Reach as I did with the Halo 3 beta. I want those shenanigans that I can only find in a Halo game.
I blame lack of mancannons, trip mines, and Valhala.

My play time is going to be cut back now thanks to me being back from vacation (not that I played as much as I wanted on vacation anyway), but I am really looking forward to NT1 this weekend.

My opinion on the party chat thing: I can mute annoying kids and racists. I can't unmute party chatters, and I can't tell party chatters that someone is coming behind them or I suck with Snipes, would you like it? It's fine in FFA and BTB, but in objective games and the Arena, it's annoying as hell.

After more and more games, I really agree with a lot of you: increase the jump height, please, Bungie, and increase the player speed. I know we're knock-off Spartans, but the jump height is ridiculously low. Now we're shorter, slower, and we jump like I do in real life. Any improvements, no matter how small to speed and jump height would be welcome. I'm personally not pining for Master Chief moonjumps, but the whole baby-gate height jump has grown wearisome, especially in Invasion and on Powerhouse. Sprint-jump helps, and give an almost Crackdown feel compared to the default jump, but I'd prefer to have an option beside Sprint-jump to make it over the stairs from the waterway to the bathroom on Powerhouse.

I've run into two interesting bugs during Invasion this past weekend. One, I call Magic Carpet ride. My spawn bro popped up on the back of my Warthog at the end of a round of Invasion (standing on the back of the 'hog, not as the gunner). I take off right as the end game score is coming up, and he falls off the 'hog, but glides behind me for a little while as I drive off:

Before that I played a game of Invasion Slayer. I put the file of the whole game in my share. Basically, no choice of spawn, no armor abilities or loadout choice the entire game (~9 minutes). I think it was this game, but I'm not sure:

ProPipe: How the hell do I use this thing? I aim directly at people, above people, below people, around people doesn't matter. Unless I use it as a shotgun, the damned grenade bounces between the enemy's legs, falls short and bounces God knows where, etc. I've tried the manual detonation, auto detonation, and the only thing I know works is meleeing with it. =/

Picture time: I think this one showed up during the reign of Oonsk, but here's my version:

I'm happy to invade you!

I think that is part of it with me too, the game is too grounded. Even blowing up vehicles isn't that much fun anymore. Increase the Jump, and by a lot. I actually wish they would dump AA all together, they all basically slow the game down to me. Its like you are in a one on one battle and they guy armors up and u just have to sit there. Or they guy flies away. Maybe if they were equipment they would work better.

2. My understanding is that the uppermost option is chosen based on frequency/percentages like the previous Halo 3 playlist system did. (Some map/gametype combination appears X percentage of the time as the chosen default). The uppermost option is what the system thinks should be the next map based on whatever criteria they use - such as map and gametype percentages, etc. If I'm distracted (in the armor menus, settling a crying child, going to the washroom) I'd it goes to the default chosen by the system.
I know this isn't the case.

In arena, the arrangement of gametypes is set in stone:
1) Slayer
2) Slayer Classic
3) Slayer Pro
4) None of the above

with maps chosen at random (or maybe some weighted percent)

In Invasion it is always set up in a similar fashion:
1) Invasion
2) Invasion Slayer

I can't speak for FFA since I've barely played any of it but Grab Bag certainly doesn't have its selection lists set up so that each gametype has a weighted chance of being the default. For example I have never seen Covie Slayer as the default selection.

So there is no weighting underneath determining what's "default" unless you consider Slayer being the default 100% of the time a proper distribution of weightings. With people's votes already decided for them and in many cases some swinging the final balance towards the vanilla gametype which is normally on top, there is less variety in the gametypes people get to experience even when those with enough desire to vote choose a more flavored offereing.

Here's a SWAT game of mine. I saved it to show people the lag between landing a headshot and people dying, the same window of opportunity that allows people the get "simultaneous gun kills". It happens two or three times in that game but you can often see them getting off shots after I send the killing bullet their way (sometimes missing me or sometimes hitting me). Link

The shit pisses me off and contributes to how terrible the gunplay feels in comparison to Halo 3. I have one or two simultaneous kills outside of SWAT if you'd rather have those, they're not in my fileshare but I can make it happen.

Cool thanks. And yea I'd really appreciate it if you could put those others outside of SWAT in your file share, that'd be great. I'm trying to break the film down and find out why these things happen and what exactly is going on. I'm also going to compare it to Halo 3 system. I'm putting together a video on it. I'm gonna hop tonight too and see if I can get some simultaneous kills. It has happened to me with melee as well. Like, I get a headshot medal and he gets a melee medal. I also really dislike simultaneous kills. I just don't know why they happen so often. I figured that the inclusion of hitscan would reduce it if not eliminate it completely but something else is happening that has increased its occurrence. Something is different.

And thanks Devin, that's a good one too.

This happened to me the other night. Was it not possible on previous Halos?

Why doesnt Reach seem to have the same 'flow'? =(

(Found it on HBO)

Speaking stictly to the video, the "flow" is probably the editing, as well as the jump height/movement in Halo 3. In Reach that will probably be offset by things like the Jetpack, assassinations, and others. This is also kind of ironic considering your avatar which has as awesome ragdoll/death animation happening that would not happen in Halo 3.

It seems to happen all the damn time in Reach, and pretty rarely in Halo 3. I'm sure there's some technical reasoning. One of the first games I played with one of my friends on non-SWAT we killed each other in the same match 5 times with guns (no melee).

Any other helmets to unlock in the beta besides the three? I'm currently a warrant officer and haven't unlocked any others.

Meh, my avatar is just a death animation, the flow comes from the gameplay. The armour abilities and stuff while awesome, seem to detract a bit from the free flow of the game. I dunno, as Dax said there are less 'shenanigans'.

Because people aren't used to an unfinished game with 3 maps yet? Luke Smith seemed to have a pretty good flow going.

Its fairly easy to do what Luke did on Invasion, but that wasnt even really 'flow'. Its hard to explain, ill shut up :D .

There are two things wrong with the veto system:
1) It shouldn't display votes (maybe only the votes of your party/team if anything)
2) There should be no default vote, only those that care to vote should have a say in what will be played. Or at the very least make the list of gametypes in random order every time so Stockpile on Powerhouse isn't automatically selected so often.
2) It shouldn't automatically pick the uppermost selection on draws, it should either do a revote with only those two selections (so people that voted for the 3rd and 4th choices can have their say) or simply choose between the two at random. Currently it (along with #2) result in a disproportionate frequency of the uppermost option.

I agree 200%.

got the mid-assassination escape under my legs and kill me instead routine by a guy today. is that a move or glitch? same move was shown by a poster a couple pages back

You miss the AR rush and melee, poor guy.

Using the nade launcher to EMP a banshee and forcing it to slowly drift off a cliff to its doom sounds like shenanigans to me.

Damn I love Invasion Slayer :lol

Are you for serious? Did you even watch the video?

I guess Reach feels more fixed to me, it seems very predictable. Halo has never made me feel like im stuck to an axis before. That video just has movement and speed which I havent seen in Reach yet.

(P.S. I miss the old HaloGaf - people didnt seem to use stupid internet insults back then).

Yes, but I still fail to see how it's a relevant argument. You're comparing an obviously unfinished product to a near 3 year old game. If it were my choice, I'd have Halo 2 back with updated playlists.

Old HaloGAF... from October '09 when you finally debuted?

They should scrap this entire game, reskin Halo 2 in this engine with Forge, Theater and Arena and call it the best console shooter ever.

EazyB said:
I know this isn't the case.
Those are examples of playlists with less than four different gametypes (three in Arena, two in Invasion), which do seem to run on a fixed order. In Grab Bag and FFA, where there are more than three gametypes, the system he described is more likely to be in place.

Oh no no, im talking about your stupid "You miss the AR rush and melee, poor guy." post. Theres no AR rush melee in that video whatsoever.

And yeah im not exactly HaloGaf, but the guys that have been here had some pretty good posts, I fully enjoyed reading them as a lurker. Infact the post quality was pretty high till the Reach beta was released and a load of people flooded in here. Back then people had differences in opinion, but backed up theyre arguments well. No one ever made stupid "You miss the AR rush and melee, poor guy." comments.

Either way my opinions my opinion, but with a game that intentionally has slow movement speed and lower jump heights you cant expect the full game to have the same level of movement as Halo 3 can you.

Anyway, your posts are really insightful and all, but im not gonna bother responding anymore, im not here to have a argument with you.

So is Invasion in it's current form a failure? I've heard way more complaints than compliments for the mode.
The concept itself is sound and quite interesting. Where there's criticism, the criticism is mostly focused on refining it from Beta to final release in several areas: load out selection and progression, spawn locations and system (see above spawn camping video), vehicle/weapon balance, objective placement and bugs. Basically, the sort of things that will undoubtedly get worked on, since it's just a Beta. There was some general surprise, since the mode is simply a lot rougher than expected, especially compared to the relatively polished Halo 3 Beta.

But that's probably to be expected to a degree, since Bungie is trying out so many new ideas at once.

Of the issues, the spawning system worries me the most. Rather than a refinement, it simply doesn't work and needs an overhaul or dramatic expansion.

I think its really close to working well, my only real complaints are the loadouts and the spawns (like you said). The only trouble is, giving Elites ranged weapons in Invasion would give them a strong advantage. Halo loses a lot of its charm when your forced to go up against Pistol/ DMR users with nothing but a Pea Shooter, but in terms of who wins the game actually works fairly well, the Elites still push through to the core most of the time.

The spawns on the other hand are terrible, being forced to spawn on the other side of the map (when your battle bro is dead or in battle) is not great.

I think 'Invasion Slayer' is a mess though, why bother holding territorys when you can let your enemy do it and then just kill them for the goods? I think normal Spartan vs Spartan BTB with random weapon drops on a time basis would be more fun.

I'm only really liking the feel of the warthog right now. All the other vehicles just don't feel very good to control IMO, which is a shame considering control and feel of vehicles was always one of the things the Halo games never failed at. But hopefully they're not final yet.

I feel that the vehicles were perfect in Halo 3 and yet they go and break them. Some are overpowered (Scorpion) and others feel like a death trap (Warthog).

The more I play Invasion, the more I see how broken and how much work it needs. Oh well, the other game types are great. Can't wait to see Firefight *crosses fingers*

Oh, I was also bummed to find out that Warrant Officer Grade 3 was the highest rank in the beta. I was so pumped to get my Captain badge, but later sad when I saw "Max Rank" in stead of an empty bar :lol

I'm just under 200 games for the beta. I like it. Overall, the game is solid and a lot fun. Just give the Elites better weapons in Invasion and make the respawn locations more even and I'd say Bungie's got another hit :)

My only problem with it is that the camera is so close. It could use a little zooming out, then it would be perfect.

So I've been playing this non stop the past 2 days, it's awesome. Totally re-vitalised my interest in Halo.

Quick question / observation.

Am I the only one that's having problems killing people with the Needler Rifle? That gun just seems amazingly underpowered. I can't kill anyone full shield 1v1 with it, unless I'm doing it amazingly wrong.

Agreed, the reduced speed, acceleration, and jump speed really remove one of the things that differentiates Halo from other shooters. How 1v1 BR firefights would move up and around the geometry. How you could easily maneuver around the many planes of the level to get a better line of sight to your target.

In Reach, even on more open maps like Powerhouse, people don't move around the map in this distinct fashion. Instead, like all other shooters, you skate around the path you're set on, relying on stairs or the occasional lift as gimped means of added a 3rd dimension. Of course the jetpack offers a way of moving in a more interesting fashion during firefights and getting lines of sight but it's far from the standard gameplay element it once was. Hell, you're even forced to crouch on the ground if you wish to be most accurate.

There are many things I don't like about Reach's covie gameplay but the movement and jumps are more Halo than anything else in the game and evade is a very dynamic and fun improvement upon that. The strength of their shields and how quickly they replenish do a lot to undermine everything good about the covie gameplay as it results in clusterfuck of melee and stickies.

Spartans are the main instrument to be used in Reach's MP so the maps will undoubtedly be tailored (jumps and such) to their default mechanics. I just can't see maps like Midship and Lockout ever working under such a system. I could just reduce the gravity and increase the player speed to match that of previous Halos but beyond being limited to custom games, I fear every map that comes out of Bungie won't work properly in these conditions. I really hope the level editor is fantastic and MLG revives what makes Halo Halo. Here's a beta code for anyone that bothered reading this far H64W3-4WPPH-VXRG4-D9HRG-3T3CY

I find Halo 3's vanilla experience more varied and enjoyable than what MLG offers but what Bungie's delivered with Reach is more foreign and less compelling than what MLG could potentially offer.

Wow Eazy. That SWAT film you sent me is pretty nuts. My video will probably go up tomorrow. Wednesday the latest.

edit: Oh my god! Thanks for this video Eazy, the second simultaneous kill is even crazier.
