Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Whatever, the one in Overlook is better, but still no Vahlalha.

Remake confirmed

Could only play one game tonight unfortunately, hate the lag, but I understand it. Cooldown seems a bit too fast to wear off when defending, too slow when attacking (I know, I know). Fun, so far.

My 360 controller is not working. Gonna have to get a new one. At first I thought I was just lagging, but nope. Hopefully this is one of the contributors to some of my recent poor game play.

So I'm asking myself, why all the secrecy regarding NT1? If it's just Reach's Firefight mode, why not just give us Firefight? Drop a few waves of Elites in there, and bam. Nothing we haven't played before. Why make it Spartans vs Elites? Why is the goal of the gametype so simple? Why use the co-op netcode for this at all?

Spasm's greater NT1 theory:
NT1 is actually Reach's special blend of 3 herbs and spices; Campaign, Firefight, and Adversarial mode.

3 Spartans vs 3 Elites, with both human and Covenant AI soldiers scattered throughout, for the entirety of the regular campaign.

For the Spartans, it's pretty much business as usual. Play through the story, clear out skirmishes, and keep trying to advance to the next checkpoint. In your way this time though, are 3 Elite heroes controlled by other players.

The possibilities for the Elite player logistics would be numerous.
These Elite heroes could spawn in squads of AI Grunts as captains. They might even be able direct them in battle (remember the regroup command on the Controller layouts?).
They could possibly earn better squads (Jackals, Hunters) through performance/checkpoints.
The number and type of squad AIs you spawn could be a loadout option.
Seeing as how the emphasis should still be on progressing through the campaign, Elites could have one life, and be forced to spectate till the next checkpoint/skirmish, or keep spawning as long as they still have AI squads alive. Hell, maybe there's even a plot point in the campaign where the Elites are supposed to be victorious, and these rolls are reversed.

...Or it could be regular assed ol' Firefight... I guess...

DOOOO WANT!

I can only think of one thing that would complete the amazing look of Overlook: Forerunner structures.

Damn.

I fully expect some awesome Forerunner love in Reach.

Hey everyone, I just thought of a criticism: I think Halo 3 Elites look better than Reach Elites. Am I wrong?

Yes, 100% wrong. Also Daxy, if your missing your forerunning beauty, go listen to the Paul Russle Episode of the Bungie podcast. I just listened to it in the car coming home and it's like a fine wine, only gets better with time.

The only thing I like more about the Halo 3 Elites are the eyes.

Other than that, so, so wrong.

Overlook is beautiful and seems like a cool map. It sucks the games are so laggy though. There's delays on everything to the point where it's not fun to play. Sucks because I really wanted to try out Generator Defense. And I am it's just...Not to the full extent I guess. Seems cool I just wish I could legitimately play it.

Cool screenshot I took today. Scarface re-enactment.

I wonder if you can still jump in the turret? :lol
No, it gives you the flip option. Someone tries to flip it a bit later in the game and it goes like halfway then springs back into that inverted position. I still have the full film saved, So I'll make sure to upload it and send it in. That happened in Invasion though as opposed to the Invasion Slayer they're asking for. Can't imagine there's much difference really though.

I agree.

This feels more like Halo 3 to me. It has the same laggy unresponsive movement and controls that filled most games and often ended with a rage quit. Being from Australia, any game that had 200 - 300 ping felt like this (which was most games in Halo 3).

I hope there aren't many maps like this in the full game :/

1) Overlook is an amazing looking map. Going to be a great Firefight map.

2) I thought there was to be a pause between each generator lock down, but there doesn't seem to be one. They get locked a second or so after unlocking. Which makes the mocked-up gametype a lot less interesting than it could be.

Latency was fine in the one game I just played, though it definitely felt like Halo 3/ODST campaign/Firefight netcode.

Someone point me to a uploading FAQ for my videos in reach? I have fuct around with it for the last 30 min and nothing is showing up. Thanks

How do you feel netcode?

There's a difference in the networking setups for normal Halo multiplayer and campaign co-op/firefight. For campaign co-op/firefight every input has to go through the host first I believe. Enough latency and it can become unplayable.

The effect of it, rather. Good grief. I knew from the moment I hit jump the first time from the input lag that this was a campaign/Firefight test. It feels very distinctive from multiplayer and is instantly recognizable.

Yeah. I'd love to roll through NT1 with a few other GAFers, but I couldn't find anyone else on to play with just now. Two games in, and I'm done trying to play alongside two random idiots with no mic who don't know how to play the gametype.

Well I was just curious about what you meant exactly... Not trying to give you shit.

I did notice the lag between inputs as well but I never felt that during Firefight, so I was curious as to what you are going on about.

I haven't really seen anything about this but I'm sure someone posted it, but the feel of the network while playing NT1 feels like it's using the distributed network model, similar to Halo: CE. Can anyone confirm this or point me in the right direction? If I remember correctly, firefight works off this model and is similar to Halo CE network model.

Also Dani, Don't try to bend the spoon.

I'll jump on if you wanna test the network. GT: Laszlo

With Firefight in ODST, you can control it to a certain extent. If you go into Firefight with people who live nearby you'll have a pretty low latency good ol' time. However, with Network Test 1, if you go in with a group of 3 and get matched against another group of 3, there's no telling who the host will be and where he'll be from. It's uber important that Bungie's regional matchmaking option is awesome.

So we've got a wonky 6 player Campaign/something gametype. And 6 fuckers on the Noble Team. 6 player co-op seems dallsuary, but it's already been revealed the team splits up. Will they just ham-fist it like Halo 3, or maybe the game has some co-op only missions?

This actually reminded me of something, is there any way to tell who's host in the game? I remember in H2 you could tell if your host pretty easily but I have no idea how to tell these days, this probably by design.

Find the guy that's impossible to kill, but can kill you without timing his shots. :lol

Or the guy that drops your shields cross map insanely fast :lol

But yea, I don't know why it's such a secret. There should just be a little icon next to their name when you hit the back button to check the score.

Played a couple of games of NT1 tonight. Had a bit of fun, although it sucked without a team. There were a bunch of quitters and people standing still. But I got a two for one with the laser, so that was cool.

Probably been mentioned: the elites can shoot at C from their spawn side very easily. They can't do a TON of damage, but it still feels like there should be a wall or something.

ill try this again, would anyone with a capture card be willing to download a vid from my file share and record it and send me the file?
Put it in your file share and post the link. Any number of us will then render it via Bungie Pro and you can download the video file from bungie.net to your. We do that for people all the time.

Yeah, I was in no rush :lol

The more I listen to that radio VO, the more that sounds like Carney. I hope Bungie adds more little treats like this into Reach. I remember playing the Ark and hearing the radios on the downed pelicans. It was almost like a radio play, Voc and Cocop did a great job in filling in the gaps and helping understand the radio chatter with those on AJ. Here's looking forward
Unto Dawn
to Dani's articles on Reach, can't wait mang.

Ok, so does the ranking system have anything to do with matchmaking?

Cause Im a silver right now, and it's getting a little tiring going up against 4-teams of Onyx. :lol
