nope.

I thought they looked pretty bad-ass as well. And they role they are supposed to play should be very awesome if it works correctly.
I'm not sure... they look mean and vicious, I'm just now awaiting how Bungie uses their role.

Of the 4 playlists that require anything beyond the Halo 3 retail disc, which do you think should drop the requirement:
Team Throwback
Team Mythic
MLG
Action Sack
Those three, Throwback, Mythic, and MLG, should be the only ones requiring all maps. Especially MLG and Throwback since they are such limited in the number of maps, anyways. Also agree with Syrup about map usage, but that's an old book.

A brand new engine that looks pretty much exactly like the last one? What the hell?

Well, it's going to look like Halo, even with a new engine. Some better filtering, less shitty looking humans and supposedly better animation overall will do a lot for the look of the game.

Character models and new weapons look great.

Everything else doesn't really move me. I expected better, but at the same time - I can't even expect the game to look that good as it currently is.

Fuck it, I'll probably get a proper look in the beta. One thing I'm interested in is the water tech, Halo 3's is still among the best.

I still don't know where the trailer is supposed to fit in. If it is indeed the opening of the game, why does the GI preview mention that Noble team was investigating possible Insurrectionist terror attacks on the communications array until the Covenant revealed themselves to them?

Maybe it doesn't fit into the game at all? They put it together rather hastily and said they changed what they originally were going to show. It might be like Halo 2's E3 vid.

Modern Warfare 2 has 4 player splitscreen, right?

I'm sure there are a lot of games that have 4 player split screen or online co-op and a few even have the saved films feature or some variety of it. I don't remember a console game other than Halo 3 that has all of those features which was the point I was trying to make.

Uncharted 2 has saved films and looks amazing, Modern Warfare 2 has four player split screen and looks amazing, Assassin's Creed 2 has a massive scale and it looks amazing but none of these games feature all of that at once while maintaining the quality of their graphics. There has to be reason for that.

Uncharted 2 and MW 2 also feature a separate online co-op campaign while the main SP campaign stays a strictly single player affair. There has to be reason for that too.

Congrats to Cocop and Voc (belatedly) on their jobs. I'm inherently jealous of anyone who has a job where they love what they do.

Also thanks to Dani for the updated OP. This thread moves far to fast to keep up with.

EBGames screens look like poo. Delay game to 2013 and make it better.

Honestly, the only somewhat questionable one is Action Sack and when you look at what maps and gametypes it has it becomes obvious why Sandbox is required. I'm sure the 4 million ODST owners would love to get some more time with the maps they paid for. As it stands, it's rare as hell to get Mythic maps outside of those 4 limited playlists. Once Mythic 2 is finally made available for everyone I think they should bump up the requirements on a few playlists. I mean the people that are still playing Halo 3 two years after its release are the people that have all the maps and want the most variety they can get.
What I was going to post. I want to play the maps I paid for in more than 4 playlists. I wish there was still a way to play Longshore other than hopping in to Social BTB and hoping all 16 people have ODST.
I'm hoping after Mythic 2 goes out Legendary goes free and Mythic 1 drops to 600.

Why is that? Why shouldn't the maps be used in other playlists?

Whatever happened to ranked Big Team Battle? It was the one thing I was looking forward to most once I had all the maps via ODST.

I just can't win.

Also: thanks guyz.

serious (slightly off topic) question....

Which other game allows you to take 3 guests via 4 player splitscreen online and team up with another party online and go at it with another team? Halo 3 is my first XBL experience and i have to say, it spoiled me.

Hey if we're lucky we might be able to ride the skirmishers like Chocobos. In all seriousness though, I think its going to be interesting to see how Bungie is going to introduces the flanking dynamics our feathered friends will have.

Judging by what Mr. Morello said, and what we've been given so far officially, the conclusion is this:

First mission is finding the team, second is going to the covenant.... I just confused myself. I have no idea where it is either. I'll get back to you on that. Hmmm....

Madden maybe...

As far as shooters go, UC1 for the Xbox 1 had it. Such good times with that game.

Day 1 of the second part of my plan to become like voc...

The weird bald men surrounding me have no idea of my plan to change the world to use ARs.

If Bungie fixes the IQ from Halo 3 and makes the environments less bland in Reach, I'm completely fine with those images.

However, what's bugging me is that I was always under the impression that Halo doesn't match up to other shooters graphically because to its scale (amount of enemies etc). From the replies in this thread, it seems like this is not the case. So my question is, is it actually possible to make a shooter of Halo's scale, with something that looks graphically like KZ2 or UC2?

I am being totally serious. My knowledge when it comes to game tech is essentially nil.

It's partially the scale, but it's more that the game needs to be able to run multiple split screens with the same framerate and only a minimal hit to graphics from single-person, and all the other tech (films etc) that is in the games that really hurts it.

Even then, the only problem I have with these screens is the lack of decorators, with I think is mostly that these are in-development shots.

I'm sure it's possible but don't expect feature parity with a game like Halo 3. If we don't limit this discussion to the FPS genre I'd say there are two examples on the 360. Alan Wake and Assassin's Creed 2.

Both can visually keep up with the best of the best and still feature giant sandboxes.

It's not a new engine unfortunately. :-(

I thought bungie claimed it was a new engine, and if so as far as a new engine does go it looks pretty much identical to Halo 3. I don't think Bungie is going so to much on graphic improvement, so much as little touch up. News has it, stuff like how clear things are far away is going to be improved. So i think its minimal stuff like that being improved, which i believe to be greatly unfortunate because there is so much potential for the halo franchise.

I'd also add FarCry 2 in there. Sometimes that game looks mindbogglingly good.

I can answer for myself. I see two great options:

1. Keep things cool, clean, crisp and simple, with lower overall detail, but achieve a locked 60fps.
2. Gears of War 2 (only with color and Bungie art direction), or something that looks more like the Halo Wars cinematic and/or CGI Halo 3 commercials.

What I think we'll end up with is Halo 3 with some more detail and better AA, but true believers will be able to overlook it because the gameplay is so solid. To me that'd be a shame, because the gameplay deserves a better presentation. Better graphics (and/or framerate) can actually make a game feel better, and that's what I've always thought was missing from Halo 2 on.

Good answer, and I agree.

Nothing more than full AA and a 60fps lock would change it dramatically in my eyes.

But MOST people bemoaning Halo, I suspect want Halo to look more like something it isn't, and something I wouldn't want it to be.

Maybe GI is waiting for some embargo to expire to put up the new pics. Maybe EBGames broke this embargo by putting their screens up yesterday.

All the other updates have been put up at 10:00AM according to the site, so this is a bit suspicious.

Not with current consoles. Maybe PC.

Engine discussions always give me headaches.

Just take a look at Splinter Cell for example. Ubi Montreal started out using the Unreal 2 engine and they rewrote the renderer and yanked out parts of the engine to replace it with their own stuff for every new game. Does that mean that Conviction uses the Unreal 2 engine even though the engine stopped having anything in commong with the Unreal 2 tech somewhere around Chaos Theory or at least the very least Double Agent?

Or let me ask that question the other way around, do you seriously think that each new version of ID tech was build completely from the ground up without taking any lessons from earlier engines like the Quake 1 or Quake 2 engine?

Of course Reach has a new engine and of course Bungie will reuse Halo 3 tech where it is appropriate.

The EB pics are the same as the GI ones, so I'm confused as to these 'new' screens.

This. New engines don't have to rewrite every single piece of code.
